I realize I could be opening a can of worms here, but I feel that it's a necessary conversation to start for our next unit:
What are your feelings on immigration?

I think immigration is really important to our country. If we didnt have immigrants then none of us would be here! Illegal immigration is was I dont like. But I think thats a whole different subject... I think it is cool to find out where your family immigrated from and see what your heritage is all about. Im Swedish!
AS Olivia said Illegal Immigration is wrong and this topic is not necessarily limited to that issue so it shouldnt be brought into this discussion. In the proper legal sense Immigration is a great thing. everyone can learn from other groups and their respective beliefs so it is great that we have many other people coming to our country. how can a country interact in the world without the background of people it is interacting with. if people immigrate into the US then it opens room for our country to grow in the world and people in our country can learn a lot more about the world around them.
Personally I think that there are only two different kinds of immigration, illegal and legal. There is a large difference between the two. I believe that illegal immigration is wrong, hence, illegal immigration. Legal immigration is what I approve of, because like Olivia said, we wouldn't be here without it. I think that if you want to be a citizen of our country, you have to go through the right channels. If everyone from every other country came to America illegally, all the jobs would be taken and everyone would be poor and jobless and possibly homeless. Imagine the government trying to support the world. That's why.
I think immigration, that is legally, is very important to our country. It has allowed us to have many differnt cultures all in a fairly close area. It has allowed new ideas to develop and different languages to be heard. I do think illigal immigration is wrong though, as the three people before me have stated also. It is a terrible thought to think that people are coming into our country without our knowing it for they may be the kind to start the bad stuff. Immigration in the older days was definitely important and was a good thing for certain people's saftey and just so some people could be free.
I don't mind immigration because it doesn’t really have a direct effect on me. If everyone was speaking different languages and burning flags I would be mad, but most immigrants eventually learn English, and respect our traditions, and values. People also talk about how immigrants are taking all of our jobs, but if you think about it we have close to if not the lowest unemployment rate around. I also think that it creates more competion and makes us want to be better at what we do. Also if we get enough immigrants other countries will start to take notice and try to improve their countries in order to compete. Immigrants also bring with them their money, and having more money circulate through the U.S. defiantly won't hurt. Overall I think immigration is important to the U.S.
America was basically formed on immigration, despite the Indians. But still, as Olivia said, with out immigration none of us would be here. I personally don't mind immigration, as long as it is legal, because it does not affect me. However, it bothers when I walk through WalMart or something and hear a group speaking in a different language. I know, it is not a big deal, but still, at least learn English if your going to immigrate here. I also think that illegal immigration is not good, because they are not a citizen of the US. I do like immigration, because it brings a sense of diversity to our country, and after all, the US is referred to as "The Melting Pot," meaning many different cultures are mixed together to make our nation.
My thoughts on immigration: it's a double edged sword. Just like most things in today's world, it has its positives and drawbacks. If it weren't for immigration, there would be a lot of native americans around this country and nobody else. Our country was founded by immigrants, so im going to go ahead and say that immigration is an alright thing. Yet, too much immigration can hurt our country. This whole illegal immigration thing, it kind of annoys me. I'll try to be nice, but I'm not sure how well this is going to go. If a person can't make it on their own in another country, why come to ours and try the same thing? It won't work because we have legal citizens here that get jobs, and they deserve those jobs. We also have a commonly accepted language here in the US and it just so happens to be English. Why people can't learn to speak it baffles me. Ok, im going to stop talking about this because it is making me angry. But yeah, immigration built our country but illegal immigration is bad.
I think immigration is a very broad subject. Most of us think of illegal immigration when we hear the word immigration. THis is a big subject and something that is hard on our country. I think immigration is a good thing when done right though. I feel that it is a great way to connect everyone in the world.
Immigration is great because it makes our country diverse. Not everyone is white, nor black, nor hispanic, nor rich, nor poor. We all have different heritages and backgrounds. Also being that the united states is such a rich country, it's important that people from less fortunate countries have the opportunity to come here to make a better life for themselves. On the other hand, as Katie pointed out, I really prefer that immigrants at least make an attempt to learn English. Not just for our sake, but it makes it easier on them to be able to communicate with everyone around them. So other than many immigrants not knowing our language, I'm all for immigration!
I think immigration is awesome! It's so cool to meet people from around the world, and I take it as a compliment that so many people from around the world want to live in my country. Still, they need to do it the right way. They only aid in ruining our country by coming into it illegally. I think we need more devestating consequences for those who get caught in our country illegally. It'll help bring down the number of illigal aliens crossing our boarder, which will help make our country safer. If we can stop watching our boarders, we can start focusing more on terrorism and the protection of our airports and subways. But that's just illigal immigration. Legal immigration is totally awesome and I think we should try to encourage it (as long as we can continue to support our current citizens, you know, like when your parents tell you to only take bites you can actually handle at the dinner table). :)
I believe that in order to benefit as an american society it is important for us to be welcoming to others. Everyone can bring something new to the table and by working with others it can even help out our relationships with other countries. Obvious illegal immigration is not highly looked upon, but maybe we could reconsider our policy. What if we made it easier to become an American citizen I think it would cut down on illegal immagrants. Like Olivia said all of us are immigrants, and it is important to recognize that other cultures can bring great ideas to America.
Immigration, from what I can tell, is quite necessary not only to the United States, but to the entire world's economy. Although it has of late been in a rather poor light, I believe that nothing bad could ever come from it. Immigration adds consumers to the market, and although some of them may not pay taxes, they must still buy things. This means that our government makes more money from them, but what it does with the funds is for an entirely different discussion. Also, immigration diversifies our society, allowing us a chance to expand our knowledge through cultural integration.
To me, the whole immigration controversy has become too much of an issue. The opponents of immigration seem to have forgotten the importance of the very thing they are against in their numerous protests; a thing without which the world would contain much more isolation and thus fewer learning opportunities.
As most people have said, immigration can be looked at as a positive thing to the benefit of our country. However, illegal immigration is what I dislike. If you are going to live in this country, you must abide by and obey its laws and regulations. While I do find it important to keep an open mind toward other languages and cultures, I do feel it is more of the immigrant's responsibility to learn about the language and culture of our country since they would like to be a part of it. With the exception of important information regarding medical or emergency situations, I disagree with the the translation from English to another language on buildings or billboards or labels. If you plan to live in the country, it is your responsibility to learn our primary language, English. Although I am taking Spanish and feel it is somewhat important, I hope I will never be faced with a situation where I wouldn't get a job because I couldn't speak a 2nd language fluently. In my opinion that is discrimination and a little unfair to a person who has earned to have a living here in America. Regardless of all of the disapprovements, it is nice to know that many people look up to our country and want the lifestyles that we take for granted every day. It helps us to realize how lucky we really are.
Immigration is important in the United States because it helps our economy and brings diversity to our culture. Our society is built upon a variety of cultures, and all U.S. citizens have different heritage and roots in other countries. America is looked at as a place of freedom and opportunity by many people from less developed countries, and how would it look if we turned them away? Illegal immigration is obviously a completely different subject, as well as a controversial one, because it is bad for the economy and creates internal and external conflicts for our country. However, legal immigration is quite the opposite. Legal immigration is a positive thing that should be valued and appreciated by Americans.
Well, many people have said that immigration is a good thing but only when it is legal and to an extent. I could never really imagine myself just deciding to move somewhere outside of the US. I mean I've been to German and Holland and as far as I am concerned it is pretty much the same, just a bunch of people trying to make a living and have a good, full life. I am not opposed to immigration but really I don't see the point. If people want to move the US they can be my guest, but just make it legal and like its been said before, use English.
Personally i feel that immigration is a key part of the US economy, and a key part of who the US is as a whole. Although i'm strongly opposed to illegal immigration i think that when it is done legealy it can lead people to the country where the streets are paved with gold. Not literally, but darn close. When you think about it, Immigration is one of the few reasons that America is what we are today. We are a melting pot of the world. African, European, Asian, South American, Pacafic, you name it we've got. We are no a country who is strictly this that or the other. We are the most diverse country in the world. We have more tradations then anyone. Mainly cause we have every tradiation. We are a country of people who live and breathe immigration. We are who we are becase of immigration. The potato famine in ireland led many to come to America. Why? because we are simply a place where food is plentiful and you can always find work. I am completly against illegal immigration. If your situtation is that bad, appliy for a visa, apply for citizanship, you don't have to do it illegaly. It make take an extra 6 months, but if you just plan ahead you don't have to worry about being thrown back out of the US.
