Okay, well, I do not think she is possessed, for one thing! She is just a little more different than other children around at that time. She is extremelly intelligent and the townspeople just can not understand it. I think the townspeople are ridiculous to think of taking her away from Hester. I am so happy that they ended up deciding to let her keep the child because, yes, Hester and Pearl were both helping each other with different things. Because of Pearl's intelligence at such an early age, she can really help her mother with certain things like staying away from witchcraft and that woman who is a witch. I think Pearl has an overall sense of something beyond the comprehension of the townspeople and Hester. Pearl has something more to her that I think will add to this book's depth and symbolism.
Pearl is pretty much a stud. she really knows what is going on and one cannot say that she is possessed just because she asks questions and is good at prossessing information. i really like pearl and think that i could get along well with her. i was appalled that they wanted to take her away. that is just sad i cannot fathom taking away someone's child just because they were extremely smart. if ther were common practice i would not have lasted 10 minutes before they realized how brilliant i am. Pearl is just supper smart and the common townspeople cannot see eye to eye with her or even understand her reasoning. trust me i know all about that problem!!
I don't know if i agree with mandie and brock, i think that Pearl is possessed. She kind of creeps me out and makes me fear little girls even more. I have a phobia of innocent little girls that know too much for their own good. This fear comes from scary movies with creepy little girls in them. They always seem innocent and "intelligent," but they end up being possessed little demons that kill and steal and pilfer things. I've got a feeling that Pearl is going to be one of these little girls. She is going to end up being an even more evil girl that makes Hester's life miserable. She is goint to be the town demon and everyone is going to make fun of her. I feel kind of bad because she will most likely be killed for her devilish ways, but that is the price the town must make if they all want to live. I know it's a little different view of things, but I believe it's going to happen.
Pearl needs her mother and that's all there is too it. I realize that everyone in the town think that Hester and her daughter have gone off the deep end, but a mother and daughter bond is so strong is takes an entense strength to break it. Pearl is obviously very intelligent, and has alot to offer her mom, and Hester has alot to offer her daughter. Like Mandie said I am glad that the two got to stay together because it is in both their best interest. I think that in the end we are going to be suprised to find out what happens with pearl.
Honestly (not to be mean) but Pearl reminds me of my sister. She deffinitely is an individual, and does what she wishes against all authority. She's also extremely intelligent which may or may not be a good thing. She almost sounds to smart for her own good. The way she enjoys torturing her mother by throwing stuff at her letter makes her seem really evil. The way she avoids making friends, and her actions towards the other children are also highly questionable. If I saw someone who was flipping out yelling things and throwing rocks I probably would stay away from them so I don't really blame the children for acting the way they did. A lot of you aren't going to agree with this but obviously Hester couldn't control Pearl and although she said she was her joy the girl was torturing her and causing her great agony. I don't think the two should have been permanently separated, but somebody should have taught the girl some manners. If they had a boot camp back in those days I would have definitely sent her to one. She needs to be taken care of before things get out of hand, or she's going to end up being hung for being a witch.
It appears that Pearl has become a bit of an outcast like her mother. For instance, the children have heard their parents talking about the scandal and thus they pick on the child. To this she obviously retaliates in a vicious and brutal fashion which brings disapproval of many parents in the colony. This disapproval is brought about because children are supposed to be small scale adults. Also, the parents of the colony firmly believe that her conduct shows that she is a demon child. Along with the worries of the townspeople, Hester is also very worried about her child. For instance, she worries that she is demon possessed. Pearl's ability to point out the smallest detail at such a young age appears to be a clue that, as the book put it "prompted by a demon." Furthermore, Pearl's actions hurt Hester in that they seem to be mocking the woman's past sins. Specifically by the curious look in her eyes that contains a smile of malice. I think that pearl, although different, is an intelligent girl that has drawn off of her mother's sorrow. This would explain the differences from the other children of the colony.
Wow, Pearl....from what we have so far a pretty intresting character. She is one who seems quite innocent but at the same time it kinda confuses me because of the fact that she is sooooo innocent. Like Jordan said, it is just kinda creepy. She seems to know only the little bit that she needs to know. Nothing more and nothing less. I think that she is very intelligent and also quite weird. I mean why does she chase after the kids, that is just mean.
I agree with Brock, Pearl pretty much is a "stud". Without her and her intelligence, Hester would have been doomed. I think that Pearl has the same or better understanding of the world than some of the townspeople. To me, the townspeople seem extremely stupid and primitive because they see everything in religious terms. That may be because of the society they are in, but at least Pearl turned out okay. Why can't they see Pearl as just a smart little kid? Maybe she is just too much like a miniature adult for her own good. She has become an outcast just like her mother.
Pearl is, in so many words, different from the other children around the town. She seems more pure than the others, and seems to have more personality, even as an infant. This is apparent to the townspeople- to the children even. They sense a sort of unorthodoxy in her, a feeling that is not altogether evil- not yet in her life at any rate- but one that is simply different from the other people. So far, Pearl seems to be developing in a way that will set her apart from the other Puritans in that she does not seem to condemn others or follow the Puritanic rules. Dimmesdale, in any case, saw that she is the only thing keeping Hester Prynne's life worth living, and so it is beneficial both to her and to the overall narrative that the decision was made to keep them together, lest the book end grimly with Hester giving up.
I think that Pearl is just an innocent little girl that just questions everything more than the average person. She most definately not possessed. Like many have said she is just different, which makes her an outcast like her mother. The townspeople were wrong to even think of taking the child away from her mother. I mean, they are the only thing each other has. I cant imagine making a child give up everything that they have because he/she is different. That is just digusting. Pearl is a very special child. Im sure she will have great significance in the book.
When I first started reading and it said she was a "born cast of the infantile world. And imp of evil, emblem and product of sin," I felt bad for Pearl. However I'm thinking she is demonic now. What kind of three-year-old child violently throws stones and screams at any other children who come near her? And growing up in a deeply religious Puritan village, it's strange that when told by Hester that she was sent by God Pearl adamently yelled that she had no Heavenly Father. I completely agree with Jordan about the young innocent children in scary movies. I kept picturing a creepy little girl repeatedly whispering "I have no heavenly father." It is sad though that when Pearl and Hester walked through town, the townspeople's inital reaction was to throw mud at them. Also Hester shouldn't have to get rid of Pearl, because although she is a demon child Pearl is the only person who accepts her.
I think it’s pretty evident that Pearl might be possessed in some way. Hawthorne uses a lot of obviously suggestive word choice when describing her, such as “the unsearchable abyss of her black eyes” and “the puppets of Pearl’s witchcraft.” Also, her actions indicate that she’s probably a bit evil, such as shrieking and throwing rocks at other children and playing violent make-believe games. She is also obsessed with Hester’s scarlet letter, a mark of sin and shame. The townspeople’s reaction is pretty typical. She is a child born from sin, which makes her evil in their eyes. Hester’s reaction is also believable, in that she has doubts about her daughter but still cares for her. I think it’s good that Hester was allowed to keep Pearl. She belongs with her mother and would not be able to adjust to the strict lifestyle of the townspeople.
I agree with Kristy and Jordan. I don't know if she's nessisarily pssessed, but there is definatly something up with her. I've been gone, so I don't know what all you've said on the subject, but I think Hawthorne meant to have Pearl as some sort of symbol or as a way to foreshadow things. She's an innocent little girl, the perfect character to have looking into the true nature of people. She's against authority, so titles and rights don't matter to her. She sees people for what they really, truely are and nothing more. She's made an outcast because she doesn't see the way others do, because she doesn't have rules and authority to hold her back. I'm not sure entirly what Hawthorne has in mind for her, but I think it's important to watch the faces she makes and the way she acts around certian people...
I dont believe that Pearl is possesed or a demon child or what ever else they called her. I think that she was just so different from everyone else that they werent quite sure how to take it. I think it would be a huge mistake to take Pearl away from her mother. Pearl already knows that she is different and if you take her away from her mother she will be losing the one person that she has to relate to and talk with. Pearl needs her mom and I believe that Pearl is actually helping Hester too.
In my opinion, Pearl is just plain different. She is not as well-behaved as the others in the town, which i see as sort of a free-spirit. I do not think she was possessed or a demon child, but due to the lack of beatings and punishment from Hester she does not act like a regular Puritan child. Hester sees her as the scarlet letter, only with life, because she is also the result of her bad decision. I believe that Pearl just wants to be different, because she was never really taught the proper manners and structure of the Puritan people. Just because she is smart for her age, doesn't mean that she is possessed. I think that Pearl will have a big role in this story.
I like Pearl. She is a little different, but everyone would be if they had to go through what she has. Being taunted by other kids can make a person act stranger. Shes also a very smart kid. Im glad they didnt take Pearl away from Hester because they both need eachother. Pearl is not evil. She has just had a more unusual life than most people.
