Do you think there is a "happily ever after" in Hester's future with Dimmesdale? Explain.

Yes I think there might be a happily ever after between Hester and Dimmesdale. They obviously still love each other and are quite a match for each other. Hester is strong and Dimmesdale is always asking her for help, whereas Dimmesdale is very sensitive, so he brings out the best in Hester. They are so happy when they are together as is shown when they were sitting in the forest. Also, Dimmesdale was hinting slyly as to whether Hester would come with him because he feared going alone and it shows how much they love each other when she agreed and caught on so fast to his hinting! As of yet, I'm not sure as to how Pearl will respond, but I know throughout the book it has seemed that she has taken a special intrest in him, as if she already knew that he was her biological father. I think it may work out for the three of them, but also because of all they have been through, it might become the tragedy that it has been set up for.

In the reading for today the book has come to a very important point in which Hester meets with Mr. Dimmesdale. As of right now, it appears that Pearl, Hester and Arthur Dimmesdale will have a happy ever after ending. This is displayed particularly in the sun shine that comes forth when the two decide to move away and live together. The sunshine symbolizes righteousness and to some extent the approval of heaven. However, despite the current possibility of a happy ending, there is something that tells me that the conflict is not completely dealt with. These chapters reveal a lot about the relation ship between Hester and Dimmesdale and they show the possibility of the three of them living happily ever after.

It certainly sound like there will be a happy ending at this point, but if it's to good to be true, it probably is. My guess is Chillingworth is going to hear of their plans and do anything in his power to stop them. I wouldn't be suprised if he finally decides to tell society Dimsdale's secret at this point and have him hung. For some reason this story dosen't seem like the "happy ending" type. Also, I don't see Dimsdale's guilt ending so easily. He's suffered with it for years, and simply moving doesn't seem like it would solve much. Hester assured him that he could still preach, but he'll most likely still feel bad and unworthy of doing so. I hate to be a pessimist, but I really don't think it's going to work out.

I think that the two of them do have a chance at a happy ending togheter. These chapters really opened up their relationship to the readers and showed us just how much they really care about eachother. Like i said before, i think a happy ending is a possibility for them but they will have to work hard in order to get it. These two seem very happy when they are around eachother and they understand eachother very well. I believe that if they both become honest with the world and to eachother they can have the happy life together that i think they both want.

OOOOOOOH!! this is so precious. i really hope that the two end up living happily ever after. seriously i think they will. we have to see look at the attitudes of them both to see te truth. Hester is very strong willed. look at how strong she was when she had to wear the A in the beginning. Dimmesdale is rather strong too at many times. to boost this i think the two along with Pearl a mix of the two can do extremely well for themselves when they move away. i truly think thw two have strong feelings for eachother so its great if they move away and can live as a family. a family life will be great for the two adults and especially for young Pearl so it only makes sense for them to all go live on their own in England.

Yeah, to go off what Shelby said, all this time, while the two were planning their "happily ever after," they forgot to add Chillingworth into their calculations. Not that I blame them. Mentioning Chillingworth would sure spoil the moment... Anywho, like Shelby said, Chillingworth is bound to do what he can to crush their plans. Yet I still think that they will get their "happily ever after." If the Seven Gables is anything to go off of, Chillingworth will do what he can, but Hester and Dimmesdale will over come his attempts to ruin them and end up having a happier ending than they originally hoped for.
Well, to put it on another view: What type of lesson is Hawthorne trying to teach here? Would having the main characters die right after they had finally been forgiven/freed from their sin teach his lesson or spoil it?

happily ever after......yes if some steps are taken, no if they are not. i think that if Dimmesdale comes out and admits he's the father, then yes i think that yes there is a GREAT GREAT GREAT POSSIBILITY. If dimmesdale hides it then no not possible at all. The only other way i see it happening is if they ove away from it all, which i don't think will happen because Hester does'nt seem like the type to run away.

i know i just commented but im afraid that i just read this and i must agree with what Cassie said from block 1. I think that on top of that, I think that the dearest revrend would proably take the needs of his church in front of his future life with Hester, I think that he would defintly take the church over his family. I think that Cassie is completly right in what she said.

As much as it sounds like a happy ending, I don't believe it will turn out to be that great. Yes, Hester and Dimmesdale obviously still have strong feelings for each other, but if Dimmesdale were to publicly announce his sin, he would be greatly punished. However, if nobody knew about it, they would be fine. But i think all the screwed up stuff in the past will get in the way. I agree with Andrew about the symbolism of the sun- it shows a great future. However, i see some foreshadowing when Pearl does not recognize her own mother when Hester lets her hair down and tears the letter off. Maybe I'm totally wrong... but it's just an idea. I think it shows a rocky future for the family.

Yes I do, but maybe because in some ways I am a hopeless romantic deep deep down inside. Hester cares about him so much, she wants him to feel no pain for what happened. She is so strong for the both of them because she doesn't want him to have to worry about anything. She has the love for him that people wish others had for them. They share an understanding, and Pearl ties them so closely together. They have a bond that no matter what, it can never be broken. They have so much history that even though the odds might not look to be in their favor, I think they are strong enough to make it through. I have faith in their relationship.

No, I do not think there is any sort of 'happily ever after' ending for Hester and Dimmesdale. Judging by how many pages are left in the book, I think we can expect more content of the grim fashion, because if the two of the them and Pearl simply leave for Europe or some other distant country, far fewer pages would be needed to explain that. Also, Dimmesdale and Hester are not characters to which many good things happen often, so I think their future is going to be quite similar. However, if there is a 'happily ever after' sort of ending after all, I think we can expect some sort of grief to befall at least one of these poor characters. I, at least, think something bad will happen to Dimmesdale.

Possibly, depending on how dark the writer decides to be. It is very possible that Hester, Pearl, and Arthur could become the ideal happy family. It is also possible that Arthur could reveal his secret and be punished as they might have to Hester by taking his life. Also, like what courtney and shelby said, Chillingworth could ruin everything resulting in the worst. If it is a happy ending, it will be probably the happiest ending I've ever read. They'll probably end up with a picket fence and everything. Wildflowers, another kid (possibly), the whole "shebang". I believe that Hester will be the one in the relationship wearing the pants... under her dress.

I think a happy ending would be nice, especially after everything this family has gone through. I agree that all the sunshine going on in the forest when Hester takes off the scarlet letter seems pretty promising, but it's certainly not too late for things to turn around. I think that Dimmesdale will probably be driven to confess his sin to the town at some point. The story would be kind of empty if he didn't. There will most likely be some kind of resolution to the conflict with Chillingworth as well. Obviously there's still a lot of conflict to be resolved, and it doesn't really seem likely that Hester, Pearl, and Dimmesdale will join hands and walk away into the sunset.

Yes, I do think that there could be a happily ever after for Hester and Dimmesdale. I think they fit very well together. It is kind of wierd that Hester is the "knight in shining armor" because it is usually the other way around. Either way I think they are very cute together. I really do. I think that it would be good for Pearl to have a daddy too. I think everything should work out to make them one big happy family.

I think that the way the book has gone so far predicts a rough life for the family of three. Yes they get all intimate and the sun shines through the forest, but that does not mean that they are going to move and everything is going to be perfect. I believe that they are going to be happy overall, but there still are a few major conflicts in store. A book with an adulterer and her guilty reverand can't just end with a happy ever after. Possibly when Dimmesdale comes clean with his sin and they reveal everything, there will be a threat on his life or something. I also think that Chillingworth might try something. Who knows what he will try, but I'm guessing it will be an effort to make Hester and Dimmesdale's lives as miserable as possible.

I would like to think that they would have a happily ever after ending, but I doubt it. Its obvious Hester and Dimmesdale love eachother. They help eachother out in various ways. When Dimmesdale hints about them being together, it shows that he loves her. Pearl is starting to like Dimmesdale. There is some connection that she can feel between them. Unfortunatley, most books lack the happy ending that we hope for. I doubt there will be one. Chillingworth will go crazy and kill Dimmesdale or something. If not, then yes a happy ending is possible.
