My thoughts on the novel/characters in Chap. 1 are . . .
(and don't say boring, interesting, etc. Be specific!!!!)

Nick, the narrator, seems like an agreeable person who, I think, has the perfect personality to tell a story. By this, I mean he is quiet, although not too quiet, and for the most part keeps his opinions to himself. I also have a suspicion that he is somewhat of an image of what our author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, thinks of himself, although that is only an assumption. Jordan Baker seems unintelligent, to put it bluntly. Or, rather, she is so 'sophisticated' as to not have required an education to get through life. An 'airhead' so to speak. She also seems to like gossip, but can be sweet sometimes as well, like when she reads Tom the paper. Tom has a personality that seems to reflect his muscular build: he his strong willed and eager to get his opinions across, and not easily daunted, or so it would seem from this early scene of him. Daisy, Tom's wife and Nick's cousin, seems to think more than Miss Baker does. She could be described as dissatisfied and, as she puts it, "pretty cynical about everything." Her husband, I believe, has something to do with her mood, because he is not there for her when she really needs him, e.i. her giving birth to their child.
I thought that the novel started in a kind of strange and confusing manner. For instance, the sentence structure in the beginning is complex and somewhat hard to follow. Also, I cannot quite comprehend the thoughts of the narrator for the first page or so. However, after the first few pages the sentences and action of the story become much easier to follow. The characters seem to have distinct personalities and many are that of aninteresting nature. So far, I think that the story is slow to start off with, but the reader is quickly faced with questions about several characters in the novel. For example, what does Gatsby do for a living or what is Jordan's background and what sport does she play. I am not a big fan so far but this might change over a period of time.
my first thoughts on this book.......OMG THIS BOOK IS GOING TO BE HORRIBLE!! I'm afraid that i was brutly honest with that, but it's the truth. i must say that i do kinda of like Nick. The guy is slightly on my good side. He seems to just have this quite calm about himself. I agree with Ben though when he says that "he is quiet, although not too quiet". I do think that like Cannon-ball the first page is just a wee bit confusing and...advanced. I think that this might be one of the reasons that i really did'nt like it that much truly. I might later but right now its just......ehhhh another book. BLAH
I don't think greg enjoys literature. The story is slow so far, as in all good books. I agree with Ben, he is rather agreeable. He seems to be rather easy going. I'm left wondering aobut Gatsby though. I want to meet that probably crazy and rich guy. I want to see that guy's house too. I agree with ben on everything except the fact that Jordan is an "airhead". The thing with Gatsby disappearing was kinda creepy. I also agree with cannon that the first part was hard to understand.
well, it was better than i expected it to be to be quite honest. It wasn't anything spectacular but hopefully it will get better. I found it kind of confusing, who was Mr. Gatsby, and what was his role? Is Tim married to Daisy? I don't know why certain things are going on, but it is much more exciting than the Scarlet Letter. It did however keep my attention for the most part, probably because I was so confused about what was going on. I am sure I am the only one lost, but there are so many characters. I think that book will get better as time goes on.
At first when I started to read this book, I didn't think I would like it. I was confused right away, for it kind of started abruptly, but then after a while, I understood things better and liked it more. I think Nick is pretty easy going and is very understanding to Daisy. Daisy seems to be in the wrong situation regarding her marriage considering that her husband has a "New York Woman." I think Jordan Baker is slightly annoying really, because it seems that she thinks she is better then everyone else and is sophisticated. I think when Daisy is so curious about if Nick is engaged or not, she is hinting for him to take interest in Jordan. I think Nick is just a single guy who just is taking life as it comes and is pretty moral, tolerant, and reserved.
My first thoughts after reading Greg's response were OMG!!! THIS BOOK IS GOING TO BE HORRIBLE!!. reasoning being that i will have to listen to him repeatedly say "Fitzgerald is a drunk" okay in all seriousness i was thinking like greg after the first few pages then it kind of grew on me. the characters seem to be very deep. i think we all will get to know the characters very well as the book goes on. and judging by the comments that Daisy gives and how quick her moods seem to change i think this will be a great opportunity to look at personalities and how they play on eachother. i also like Jordan because i think she is very shy very quiet and very outspoken. wow what a strange combination but her moods also change alot and her interaction with nick seems to be determined by who is around. i dont like tom he seems ignorant but more that anything Nick is going to be a great narrator he is super smart and seems rather analytical so i think we will get indepth looks at almost everything. so Greg hang in there buddy.
I really like how the novel is told in 1st person. I was waiting around for a novel like that! It is easier for me to get into a story when it is told first person becase it is easier to see into the characters more. The story holds my attention well at the beginning with it's fast and abrupt way of moving in and out of the past and present. Jordan Baker, although a little strange at first, seems very sophisticated and smart to me. I'm not sure what I think of Tom yet; he seems to try very hard to be an intimidating man, although it is easy to see a softer side to him. I honestly like the book more than I thought I would, so I'm looking forward to reading more of it later!
first of all, this book is about twenty times better than the scarlet letter. i think it will be a very interesting book. anyway, my thoughts on nick are that he acts kind of like an innocent bystander, not really getting into the conversations with everyone else but still maintaining politeness. he doesn't seem snobby. he is grateful to be living where he is. daisy, however is wrapped up in being rich. she seems desperate to get tom's attention. i think tom also enjoys his lavish lifestyle. miss baker is very quiet and shy. it makes me wonder why she is friends with daisy, who is loud and gossipy.
So far this book is frustrating me. Daisy shouldn't put up with a husband like Tom, and Nick should take care of his family, and not let someone treat his cousins that way. I realize it talks about how he was told not to judge people, but common sence would tell him that Tom's a jerk. Also the thought of Jordan being set up with a nice guy like Nick is upseting. Why on earth would you set the poor guy up with some chick that mad him feel like apologizing for simply entering a room. Finaly what's the deal with Gatsby? What was he pointing at? Who is he? Why didn't he want company? The book started off confusing, then it got annoying, and then it raised a trillion questions. What's next?
You know what? Surprisingly, I think this will be a good book. Ok well I can't garuntee that, but it may be better than the others. I agree with Courtney- I like how the story is told in the first person by Nick. I like Nick. I think he is well suited to tell the story, and he is very down-to-earth, unlike some characters in the story. Unlike the Scarlet Letter, I actually could read a page without going back and reading it six more times. It is easier to understand. Some things are still confusing and cloudy to me- Who is Gatsby, and why does Nick admire him so much? Ugh... I'm sort of looking forward to reading the rest...
You know how actions are suppose to speak louder than words? Well, this book put me to sleep...Is that loud (and clear) enough an explanation of my thoughts on this story so far? Don't worry, though. I've found an inventive way to keep me awake while I read this story, so that problem is solved at least. For the characters: Nick seems like a snobbish idiot, Tom is an complete idiot (not to mention the fact that he's cheating on his wife), Daisey is a self-absorbed idiot, and Miss Bater is a gossip-filled idiot. So there you have it! We're reading a book full of idiots! HAPPY DAY!!!...I'm being mean...It hasn't been that bad. I'm thinking that if there's any character I'm going to like, it'll be the alusive Mr.Gatsby. I sure hope there's someone with a brain in this book or I'm going to have to seriously consider weather F. Scott Fitzgerald had a brain, and that will lead me to wonder if the people who have fooled themselves into liking this book have a brain. Don't let *me* fool you, now. I am totally committed to fooling myself and finding some way to like this book. c(=
I really wasnt looking forward to starting this book and the more i looked at it the more i dreaded sitting down and starting to read. After the first chapter though it really isnt as bad as i had predicted that it would be. im glad the book is in first person this time because i find them easier to read. I would like to know more about Mr. Gatsby though. I thought Nick seemed like a character that im going to like through out the story. He seems to be a bit reserved and quiet yet he gets his point across when needed. i am anxious to see how the characters will interact with eachother because they are all so different in their own ways but alike in some ways.
I'm a fan of nick so far, most likely because he hasn't done anything to make me dislike him yet. He's a down to earth fellow, and he isn't one of those people that expresses his opinion about EVERYTHING! I'm left in contemplation about Gatsby. I want to find out more about him and see if he really is the "gorgeous" person nick makes him out to be. He probably is a rich guy that has split personalities and can't even feed himself, but we will find out i guess. It disappoints me that Jordan isn't going to be the most intelligent, "awesomest" character in the novel. I believe she needs to change her name to Jorden so that she doesn't give the rest of us a bad reputation. So far the book is pretty good, but i'm hoping it improves even more with a few crazy plot twists.
I agree that the story was a little confusing and hard to follow at first, but it did get easier. I think it will be easier to characterize the people in the story once we read a little more. Nick does seem pretty calm and easy-going so far. He seems like he'd be fairly easy to get along wtih and so he'll make a better narrator than others would. Most of all I want to know more about Gatsby. He seems pretty interesting and I'm looking forward to learning more about him.
So far, I think my favorite characters are Nick and Gatsby. I like Nick because he is a simple, friendly, neutral personality. He seems pretty easy-going. I like Gatsby because he is mysterious. We have heard about him, but not much. And we have only seen him a little bit. Plus the book is named after him, so he must be important. I DO NOT LIKE the guy who is cheating on his wife! I think its Tom but i forgot =) sorry.... Anyway, I hate it when people cheat, so he is automatically off of my christmas list. The story itself had a wierd beginning. It was kind of confusing. At first I had a feeling that I would hate this book. But I like it so far.........
I forgot about this... oops. I like this book more than I thought I would. I really like Nick. He seems like a down to earth kinda guy. I think I would befriend him if he were real... I dont like Tom because he seems rude and arrogant and that just isnt appealing to me... Daisy seems nice. She seems to open up to people really easily, kinda like me and I like it... Im not sure about Jordan. She seems decent, but she reminds me of someone who I will not mention and it really doesnt appeal to me... The book itself started out a little confusing, but it has got a little smoother... I think I will enjoy this novel. :)
