Gatsby Journal Chap. 2-3

There are two parts to this journal: (obviously explain your answers thoroughly!)

In Chap. 2, I was surprised that . . . because. . .

After Chap. 3, I predict that . . . because . . .

In Chapter two I was surprised by the fact that Tom's girlfriend, Mrs. Wilson, is a married woman. It seemed to me like Tom would be the kind of gut that would not like to "share" a girl with another man. From what I know about Tom I would have thought that his arrogance would prevent him from allowing a woman to be with both him and another man at once. Also, I would have thought that Tom would have pursued the one of the wealthiest women and not a woman that has married a simple working class man. Furthermore I would have thought that since she is not exactly upper class then she would not be able to get away with cheating.

From what I have read so far I predict that Nick will become enamored with the lifestyle of Jay Gatsby and then at ultimately reject this superficial chase of wealth and power. For instance, Nick has already begun to attend parties with Gatsby and Jordan, and it appears that he enjoys this form of recreation. Furthermore he focuses most of his attention on describing these instances which appear to be the high points in his life. Despite this infatuation, I believe that he will soon see through this worldliness to a deeper meaning and reject this lifestyle. This can be proved by the fact that nick has stated that nick currently has an utter scorn for what has preyed on Gatsby.

From chapter 2, I was surprised at the willingness of Nick to join Tom on an outing to see 'his woman.' This is nothing short of an affair, and it is curious that Nick is taking so lightly, because, of course, Tom's wife is Nick's cousin. He had no complaints and did not once tell Tom if he found anything wrong with the whole situation. However, Tom is a big man, and, no matter who is at fault, I would be loth to start any trouble with him.
In Chapter 3, I predict that more of Nick's social life will be described, and perhaps even the elusive Mr. Gatsby will be shown. I predict this because he has been hinted at since the start of the story, so I hope he will be presented here or sometime soon.Perhaps Nick will even go to one of the frequent parties at the Gatsby house, and perhaps we can look forward to more of Tom's bigotry.

I was suprised that Tom broke Myrtle's nose. They seemed like they really like each other. I don't understand how Myrtle can cheat on her husband with someone who's violent towards her. It seemed like they were all happy and should leave their spouses for each other, but then when she starts yelling Daisy's name he goes and hits her. I was also suprised how Tom was acting secretive about Myrtle. It sounded like it was common knowledge he had a girl in New York, but then he made her ride in a seprate part of the train, and then he hit her for saying Daisy's name. Basially i was suprised by Tom in general because of his actions. I predict that we'll find out Gatsby is a big time hitman and Philidelphia and Chicago people are calling him to murder important people in their cities. He was in the war so he had probably been around death, lots of people said they think he killed a man, and he is extremely rich and it hasn't mentioned why yet.

I was pretty much surprised at Tom's girlfriend all around. for some reason i was expecting some young gorgeous girl who happened to be single. instead we get a heavier set older married lady. this isnt bad it just surprises me that good old tom being the wonderful person that he is (sarcasm)would go for someone who is married. i think he seems to be high and mighty enough to want a girl to himself but hey everyone has different preferences. i predict that Nick will try to copy some of Gatsby's actions. i think this because gatsby has a good life and is known by all, and even though nick is a great person i still think that he will be sucked into wanting to be known more and such. i dont think that he will be just like gatsby but i think we will see a much more social side of good ol' Nick emerging in the short time to come in the book.

Okay in chapter two I guess I was mostly surprised at the extent of affairs that keep on going on behind married couples backs. I really didn't think that this Myrtle was married and the fact that her husband doesn't know about Tom is just ridiculous. Everyone is cheating on everyone. After chapter 3 I totally predict that Nick is going to drop the relationship thing or whatever that he has to get himself free and he will be with Jordan. He is so in love with her, but he just doesn't have full freedom right now because of his other writing relationship. Jordan and Nick seem to understand each other and I think they are going to get together pretty soon.

That was me above, by the way...

I am with Brock, (for once) I thought his girlfriend would be real hot and awesome. But she wasn't she was kind of different and didn't seem to impressive. Also, he is going for a married woman! SCANDALOUS! Although I suppose in the end it will make it way more interesting. He seems to demanding to want a married woman, she comes with ties and such. I think it would be difficult for Tom to have to act the way he does with the marriage. I predict that Nick will start to become more interested with Gatsby. He has a sneaky personality that we don't know much about. I think that Nick, just like the rest of us is going to want to get to know him better.

In chapter two i was suprised by Tom's girlfriend. She wasn't at all what i had expected. He seems like the type of person that would want what some would refer to as a "trophy wife". I realize that Mrs. Wilson isnt his wife but still, she isnt what i pictured him with. Since she isnt exactly the prettiest woman around it makes me think that they have a true relationship and get along very well. When they go to the apartment they really seem to be getting along well until she has too much to drink and Tom hits her. After chapter 3 i predict that we will find out more about Mr. Gatsby and his lifestyle. i also think we will find Nick begin to follow in Mr. Gatsby's footsteps and take up a life style similar to Mr. Gatsby's.

Yeah, like everyone else has already said, Tom's girlfriend caught me by surprise. I was imagining some stupid, pretty, stick of a girl, but no. Tom likes 'em married...and apparently, everyone is okay with that. Not that it was so much of a surprise that Tom would be the one to break someone's nose, but the fact that he actually did took me by surprise. I think that, along with the lie about Daisy being Catholic, shows that he doesn't really like this chick well enough to leave Daisy and marry her, but weather that's because he really doesn't like her that much or (my guess) he has more feelings for Daisy than one might think, we can't really be sure. After chapter three, my guess is that Jordan is going to get into some big trouble because of her lieing. I'm thinking that Gatsby does have some big secret, but I don't think it's as big as what the other characters believe. Of course, though, we'll have to wait until the very, very end before it's reavealed. As for Tom, I have this sudden hunch that he's going to kill (or seriously damage) Mrs. Wilson because of something bad she said about Daisy. Like I said before, I think he cares more about Daisy than one might think, at the moment. He also seems rash, not to mention brutal and stupid, enough to do something like that.

I was surprised by the way Gatsby intorduces himself. he kind of just like walks up and expects Nick to know him although they have never met. It jsut seems like of strange. I thought Gatsby would be an old man rather than someone almost Nick's age. He seems to be an all around weird character. I dont really know why. He just would be someone I think I would keep my eye on...

I think that soon to come Gatsby will do something really different than expected, kinda off-the-wall and crazy. He seems like the kind of guy who is spontanious and does things just to do them. I predict that something weird will just all of a sudden happen with him... It will be cool. I can already tell... Hehe.

In chapter two I was surprised by a lot of Tom's behavior. I was definitely surprised that his "New York woman" is married and also that he hit her at the party. I would have thought he would treat her better since they are having an affair, and I wonder if he ever gets violent toward Daisy. I also expected his girlfriend to be young and beautiful.Tom seems like someone who is shallow and superficial.
After chapter three I predict that we will learn a lot more about Gatsby. I think that Nick will continue to attend the parties at Gatsby's mansion and probably become friends with Gatsby. He will probably get caught up in the wealthy lifestyle, as we know from the first chapter that something bad is going to happen that makes Nick want to forget about it.

I was surprised that everyone acts so nonchalantly about the fact that Mrs. Wilson and Tom are seeing each other despited being married to other people. Catherine also seemed sure that Mrs. Wilson and Tom would eventually get married to each other, but I doubt either could be ever be faithful enough. What really surprised me though, was that Tom hit Mrs. Wilson when she mentioned Daisy. Maybe he doesn't like Mrs. Wilson as much as it seems he does.

I think that Nick is going to try to be alot like Gatsby. He may not throw lavish parties, but I'm sure he will attend quite a few and be very social and outgoing. Even though Nick really likes Jordan Baker, I think in the end he will end up with someone else, because Nick is a much more honest person than she is.

In chapter two i was suprised by the fact that Tom's girlfriend was just well....everything about her. I was also suprised that hmmmm well yea i actually kinda grew to like the story. Maybe its cause i read it very early and i'm crazy. But i did kinda learn to like it a bit. After Chapter 3 i predict that he will become....not obsessive with Gatsby, but i think he will kinda do a lil' prying into the life and lifestyle of Gatsby.

In Chapter two i was really surprised at the whole affair situation. Multiple aspects startled me: Mrs. Wilson was married, she was in the working class, she was far from hott, she definately did not have a great body or personality. I think that Tom just wants somebody to be with, other than his own wife. If he really wasn't satisfied with his own wife, i think he would find a rich, sexy girl to have an affair with. Also the fact that Tom punched her in the face, breaking her nose, really surprised me. Maybe if Mrs. Wilson would have threatened to not meet him anymore or something, then it might have been a little more understandable. The fact that he punched her for chanting Daisy's name makes things a little different. Personally, i think Tom is a creep and needs to be punched in the mouth!

Chapter three brought out some interesting pieces of information. I predict that Nick will fall into the trap that is the lavish lifestyle surrounding him. People have a tendancy to want to be like the people surrounding them, and Nick has surrounded himself with rich people. Nick will eventually crave the party life that he sees Gatsby living. I think because Nick is a more down-to-earth individual, he won't quite get as deep as his peers, but he will be transformed soon. He will find himself becoming more dishonest, like Jordan, and he will no longer be the only good soul around. He is going to be corrupted by his friends and he and Jordan will get married, throwing lavish parties together.

I was surprised by the fact that Tom was violent towards Myrtle. Even though Tom may be insecure about his wife, he doesn't have to go and hit a woman about it (thats a HUGE no-no.) However, I do think it was a little rude of Myrtle to keep chanting Daisy's name, even after Tom asked him to stop. Also, like pretty much everyone else has said, I was surprised at Myrtle's character. I wouldn't expect Tom to like Myrtle more than Daisy. She isn't that good-looking, and she is also married, and she is a regular working class lady. After chapter 3, I predict that Nick will try and be just like Gatsby. He seems very interested in his life, and in a way I predict it will turn out like "A Separate Peace" that we read last year. I think that Nick will become so interested in Gatsby that he will form his life to be jsut like his. I also believe that Nick and Jordan will get hot and heavy. They seem to like each other.

I was really really surprised that Myrtle, Tom's mistress, is not some extravagant, beautiful, rich woman. He seems like a very arrogant person and that he would think money and looks are important. Myrtly is a little on the heavy side and shes definatley not wealthy. So that was kind of a shocker. Also, I was surprised that Tom would break her nose! I didnt think he was that abusive. Im also surprised that Gatsby sits in the back of his parties and watches the people. I thought he would be the "life of the party" type of personality.
