Gatsby Journal Chap. 8-9

Ok, Fitzgerald, how could you . . .

I found the ending of the novel to be . . . because . . .

I liked/disliked this novel because . . .

(I'd like you to answer all of these, being very specific!)

I felt that the ending was alright, although not particularly great. There were no last page revelations or cliffhanging endings or anything else exciting. The ending to the Great Gatsby was more of a quiet one and, although there was presumably nothing more for Fitzgerald to say, I would have rather had something that gave me a little bit to think about after I had finished it.

I did not like this novel because it was literally nothing more than a series of drawn out affairs between dull, upper class characters mostly preoccupied with their own egos. There wasn't much content to this novel besides one character getting into an affair and then promptly accusing others of doing the same thing. As for the "symbolism" of the whole thing, I'm not all that big on "hidden messages" and the like so even if it had some sort of life changing revelation hidden in some symbol within the novel, I still would not have enjoyed it much. For what it's worth, I applaud Fitzgerald's writing as it is neither dull nor irritating to read, as the Scarlet Letter was.

As for the first blog subtopic, which I neglected earlier, I am not really too appalled by anything contained in these nine chapters. I was surprised that Wilson killed Gatsby, although I was expecting him to die all along. I am more surprised that Nick decided to go back home to the Midwest. I cannot imagine anyone wanting to go to the Midwest, but that would be my opinion.

Overall, this is, to me, quite an agreeable book which, despite the feelings expressed above, I appreciate it because of its portrayal of the lives of early 20th century upper class people, which I had never really thought about before.

I guess I was a little confused on why Fitzgerald didn't have Nick and Jordan marry each other. It really annoyed me that he made Jordan fall in love with someone else. It seems that all his characters in this book are so surface level and ridiculous.

I found the ending of the novel kind of boring. I mean I guess I was glad that he didn't just talk about Nick, but he went back to Jordan and Tom and talked about them too. This way we found out what happened to everyone. I thought it was kind of funny, but sad also that no one came to his funeral. It really showed how important he actually was.

I didn't really like this novel because I found it kind of pointless. I mean at first I kind of liked it because it was a cute love story, but then it kind of got creepy. Gatsby really was weird about his love for her. He was kind of overboard. Also, just all the characters annoyed me. They all seemed the same in certain respects really. They all didn't really have a life and all were just surface level and ridiculous.

I guess I am with Ben, yes it is sad that Gatsby had to croaked over, but honestly Fitzgerald is a weird guy, I mean lets look back to the car accident scene when Murtle lost her left breast?! Uh, obviously this guy is a little weird. I did not think it was Gatsby that was going to die, but I do however enjoy the slight twist that it added to the end of the story. How could he not kill Tom also, that man is a piece of crap!

I didn't really care for this novel mostly because I just found the whole experience odd. There was no real "climactic" point in my opinion. However, this book was WAY better than The Scarlet Letter. I didn't enjoy the confusing situations, such as who was with who, and events like that. It wasn't too bad, it just was not as great as I was expecting it to be.

The end was kind of vague, Gatsby died, that was really it. Everything happened so fast. I think that maybe it could have been planned out a little better. I really like foreshadowing and I don't know if it was just me or if i felt like none of this really fell into place. It just seemed BH'd out there. I don't know, I just felt odd and confused after finishing the book.

Ok, Fitzgerald, how could you...not have killed Tom and Daisy too? I mean, i am definately not complaining that Gatsby got killed, because i've disliked him from teh beginning. He got what he deserved and would have learned his lesson, if it weren't for that whole no more heart beat thing. I would have liked to see Tom and Daisy get punished a little bit more for their actions. Maybe Fitzgerald could have poked out their eyes or paralyzed them. I guess he is just too nice an author.

I found the ending of the novel to be decent because it wasn't one of those "you fill in the rest" or "what does this teach you in real life" endings. I think it brought pretty good closure to the whole story and wrapped up pretty well. Like i said, i don't really agree with all the events that happened or didn't happen, but it was a good ending. I'm just not sure that Tom and Daisy aren't mental cases, or else they are just madly in love.

I liked this novel because it didn't drone on or linger on boring topics of discussion for extended periods of time. The pace was perfect, keeping me interested all the time. I also liked the fact that Mr. Fitzgerald gave me characters to like and hate, and did a great job of making me go to both extremes. Overall, it was a good book and probably the best one we have read all year.

I do agree with Mattie and Ben about Gatsby. It just seemed pointless for Gatsby to die in my opinion. He seemed like a key person in the story since him and Daisy had a thing so i did figure that he would die at some point in the novel but i really dont get why Fitzgerald had him die at the time he did or why he had Wilson kill him. i really thought Tom was going to be the one to kill Gatsby. I dont get why Fitzgerald did this.

I found the ending of this novel to be...well...it was just an ending. I didnt really like it but i guess i cant say i hated it because i didnt think it did much. i expected that he would leave us with unanswered questions and all that good stuff. Something to keep the book on our minds.

I liked this novel because it wasnt the scarlet letter. i really, really didnt like that book at all so this was good for a change. I honestly didnt think this book was all that bad and it did keep my intrest but it wasnt all that exciting. I feel like the whole book was one chapter stretched out and split up. there just wasnt alot of material to the book i didnt think

*and for those of you that didnt hear from brock, andrew or greg...yes..i did wreck my car today at lunch. ice sucks and i know know that telephone posts will NOT move for you. so yeah thats that. now you all know so you dont have to ask what happened...dont worry tho..that acr will be back soon lol* =D

Okie dokie...Ftizgerald....Eh, I don't know. I have nothing to really complain about because I don't care enough about the novel to waste my time complaining about it. I guess it bugged me that the last image you see of Daisy is her giving in to Tom at the table. I think it's kind of weird/pathetic that Jordan was engaged at the end, too. You know, that fast after Nick. Oh well.

The ending was alright. I was actually thinking that Gatsby was going to committ suicide or do something else that would be incredible stupid. The fact that Wilson killed him instead wraps up Gatsby's delima without showing Gatsby to be a bad man. It's good that Fitzgerald could give the man a little respectability/honor at the end. However, Tom is still the greatest idiot just like at the begining. Makes me wish Nick would have told him that it was Daisy who was actually driving. Oh well.

Overall, it's not the worst book, but it's definatly not my style. (No, I do not need a dragon in a story for it to be a good book. Sheesh.) I did like the fact that this book put me to sleep again! :D But, yeah, it was just no where near my style. I like periods with honor and dicipline and dignity (and action). All the affairs in this novel just killed it right at the start. Oh well.

Ok, Fitzgerald, how could you....ruin that AMAZING book with that HORRIBLE ENDING!!! I would have liked it better if you would have just left it off with the death of Gatsby. but still YOU RUINED IT YOU BIG JERK. i liked this book till i got to the ending. Then the ending was just like HORRIBLE!!!
I like/disliked this novel because...I like the novel because 1)i could understand it.2) it actually had a decent plot. I DISLIKED THIS NOVEL because of the HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE ENDING!!!!!!!!
the ending was just like.......GRRRRR Fitzgerald you better be gald your dead other wise i would give you an EAR FULL!!!!

thanks fitzgerald i really didnt have a problem with that. because for good ol' gatsby i think it was a good way to go. he was happy thinking about Daisy and he would never get her so its fine he didnt have to suffer through life. i also think we needed to accept that it wasnt too hard to figure out.
i found it to be good i liked it because it tied things up well with the death and funeral. i also like that wilson would avenge his wife. he seemed to not have a backbone earlier in the story so its good to see that he did. at least i thought he did until he killed himself that kinda made it go away. i also liked that the Eyes showed up to really determine the ending of it all.

i liked it sort of. it was pretty easy to read which helped. i could just sit and understand it all instead of trying to dig information out like i did during the Scarlet Letter. it was good lots of good action and the characters were pretty fun to analyze and try to figure out waht they will do next. i liked it alot it also gave a good look at the 1920's and history is always fun so rock on.

and some advice for the class!! Whach out for those power poles that just jump out in front of you haha and dont wreck in front of some crazy lady's house who will call the cops and lie to them i love you sammey!

... let that happen to Gatsby? Gatsby seemed like a good guy. He decided that Tom was going to betray him to save his own skin. ERRR. Coward! He may have been a real friend to Gatsby, but that doesn't mean that you can practically kill him.

...questionable... it just leaves so many questions. It seemed strange that the writer seemingly random memory of Nick riding the train home. It's how I would have ended the book, but I'm not a writer. Fitz is. The part about the picture was strange. I think it might have been symbolism for the helplessness of the world while being controlled or dominated by an excessively powerful few.

I liked it because it had a flowing storyline that made sense and you didn't have to pry the story out like a gem out of a chunk of cement. It flowed and made sense all the time, contrary to some of the other stories we read.

How could you kill Gatsby!? I was getting to be very fond of him. He was only in the wrong place at the wrong time... Well, I guess he was pretty guilty. He was a fake person after all. Also, how could Jordan and Nick break thing off? I thought they were going to be cute together. I think something should have happened to Daisy. She may seem innocent, but she killed Myrtle! Maybe Gatsby and Daisy should like, switch places or something.

I found the ending of the novel to be kind of unfufilling (sp?). Nothing really happened. Gatsby died and had a funeral that no one came to. I found the last chapter to be kind of boring. I'm not a big fan of the books that just leave you hanging. I like closure.

I liked this novel because I actually understood what was going on. And like Sam said, it wasn't the Scarlet Letter. However, I don't like the plot... or I guess I don't really understand it too well. It seems to me like a bunch of liars and cheaters trying to... accuse each other of stuff, but
never succeeding.

I don't get how Daisy disappears completley at the end of this story. We see Tom again, but Daisy didn't even show up at the funeral of the man that gave his life for her? Nick is also Daisy's cousin so it's weird they don't meet up every once in a while. Daisy killed a girl, but she runs off and forgets about it like it was no big deal. It upsets me that Myrtles death wasn't brought to justice.

As you can probably assume I didn't like the ending of the novel. Another reason I didn't like the ending was because it was really sad how hardly anyone showed up to his funeral. Tons of people came to his parties and enjoyed the luxeries he had for them, but none of them could even bother to stop buy the poor guy's funeral. It also saddens me that his dad was there. Although overall I think Gatsby is a good guy, despite his being a stocker, he denied his parents were even living. He bought him a house and all, but does that really make up for the fact that he denied his existence? It's sad gatsby didn't have many people he even cared about at his funeral.

I didn't particularly dislike the novel, but it deffinitely wasn't my favorite. The ending upset me so I got an emotion out of the book, but it was a bad one. It had murder, and scandols, but they just seemed like average nineteen twentys occurances. They had affairs and killed people, but they just went on living like it was no big deal. It just bothers me.

ugh i can't believe he killed off poor, heartbroken gatsby! even though he was a jerk to daisy and had something to do with myrtle's murder, he didn't deserve to die! and then after being the host of parties with hundreds of people, only a few went to his funeral.

i guess i liked the fact that nick went back to minnesota, because it never really felt like he belonged in such a hectic world; he was a much better person than those rich, snobby people. other than that though the ending was horrible. tom and daisy stay together even though that don't like each other, gatsby dies, and nick is all alone.

the rest of the book however was amazing. it was interesting, easy to read, and fast-paced. i really enjoyed reading it. the only thing i didn't enjoy, other than the ending, was how at the beginning of a few chapters it was difficult to tell what was going on.

I guess we should have guessed that Gatsby would die, but it is still kind of sad. I was mostly upset that nothing ever happened to Tom, because he was a jerk and now he just has everything he wants and he'll probably keep cheating on Daisy forever. I think these may have been a point Fitzgerald was trying to make, about how rich people get whatever they want because they're rich, but it's still frustrating. i think Tom should have choked to death on a biciut or something.

The ending of the novel was...okay. I'm glad that Nick moved away from Long Island. I think he'll be happier away from the selfish, snobby rich people. And I'll just assume Gatsby's in a better place now, away from his misery.

I guess the book overall was pretty good. There were some things I didn't like about it, such as Tom's happily ever after, but I liked it better than some of the other things we've read. it was easier to underatand than others. It kept my interest for the most part and the plot was not too bad.

Ok I really don’t have a problem with the way the book ended. I think that in order to the full affect of the disillusionment with society the author needed to try and show that Gatsby although a very nice man was almost completely over looked only several days after he was killed. This type of ending truly portrayed the disillusionment with society not to mention it seemed very believable. It seems very plausible that a husband that had just lost everything he had would try and kill the man that he believed killed his wife. Also, it seems likely that in a world of almost complete interest in money that many people would abandon one of their great friends in death. Furthermore the ending was a nice surprise. I must admit that this book was not the worst book I have ever read. However this does not mean that I liked it. It seemed almost irrelevant to today’s society. This book could not have happened no w for the reason that adultery id not accepted any more. Also, I found some of the book, particularly the beginning and end to be confusing. The real redeeming quality of the novel was the ending when the theme really emerged from the other stuff the author put in the story. I am glad I am finally done reading this book.

All of them... :(...

Fitzgerald, how could you kill Gatsby. I liked him. That isnt fair. :[. It was like Tom to tell on Gatsby though. He is so yucky. I dont like Tom at all. It was sad that like 3 people came to the funeral too. Poor Gatsby. I woulda been there.

I didnt really like the ending of the novel because of the whole Gatsby dying alone thing, but other than that it was ok. I did like that Nick didnt marry Jordan. She was so stuck up sometimes, I dont think Nick could have lived with that for the rest of his life. I like that Gatsby's daddy came to his funeral and that he was so proud of his son. That made me so happy. :)

I liked this book a lot more than I like Tender is the Night. It just seemed a lot better. I guess Tender in the Night was his last novel and he started drinking at the end of writing it, but Id figure it would be about equal, but Gatsby's story seemed a lot better. I really didnt think I would like this novel, but I actually did. Fitzgerald has redeemed himself in my eyes... :)

ok...wow. thats cool. I feel dumb. How long has this been up here?

I liked this book alot. Especially compared to the past books we have read. I really like the setting and time period. Since it took place in the 1920s there is definately more drama and suspense. And sin. Which usually makes for a good read. I was disappointed that Gatsby died. I really wanted Tom to die, because he is a loser and is pretty much the main cause of all of Gatsbys heartache and suffering. I was really sad that nobody showed up for his funeral. It shows how shallow society is and how no one really cares about you if you arent throwing huge parties. Im glad that we got to meet Gatsbys dad. He seemed very nice. And it brought out the good in Gatsby (with that journal thing). Nick and Jordan didnt get married, but this was no surprise. I could tell that Jordan was not the type to settle down with someone like Nick. She needs more money, and probably more of a personality. Not that Nick is bad, its just that he seems boring at sometimes. He is just a spectator in life, and Jordan wants the life of the party.

All in all, I liked this book. The symbolism actually makes sense, and is easy to point out. Fitzgerald does seem kind of wierd, since he makes Gatsby look like a stalker, but he is a good writer.

Im just glad this novel didnt involve Puritans. Or giant colored letters of the Alphabet.
