Well with the sort of characters and oddities that inhabit this book there are always many surprises but i was able to narrow them down to a few. The first was Tom's openness about his affair. He obviously thinks that him and Nick are closer than they really are. Maybe it was what we were talking about earlier with Nick's easy-to-talk to personality but you would think that Tom might realize that NIck and Daisy are cousins...hmm... Oh and how MRs. Wilson's sister is a lesbian...wierd.
...Tom took Nick to see his girl. It’s surprising because Tom knows that Nick talks to both Tom’s friends and to Daisy's friends. It also surprised me that Myrtle knows that she is the other woman and she seems alright with that. The last thing that surprises me is that all of the people at the party are completely open about everything. It is kind of like they have no respect for one another.
Ugh! I hate when Jack posts first, he always says all the good stuff. What suprised me was how arrogant Tom was in showing him to his secret lover. He obviously didn't think things through on that one. I was also surprised when Tom broke Mrs. Wilson's nose and didn't think anything of it. I was also suprised at how cool Nick stayed under pressure from everything that happened that day. He is quite a likeable person.
when Tom took nick to see Myrtle. I mean seriously, have some decency. If you were having an affair, wouldn't you want it to be more of a secret rather than something to be shared with the world. Especially Nick who is related to Daisy. And then its like some big random party with everyone acting like its no big deal to be cheating on your wife and getting totally wasted. Weird.
I was surprised when Tom decided to take Nick to see Myrtle. I know that Tom is okay with his affair but what makes him think that Nick really wants to meet this other woman anyway. Daisy is his cousin I would think that Tom would realize that meeting this other woman might bother Nick. I was also surprised when the other woman was described she didn’t seem nearly as beautiful as Daisy so I don’t see why Tom would even want her because he seem like the shallow type that would only care about looks. I’m surprised that Myrtle is so open about her affair and how Tom and her just get together and have a big party. I mean I would like to think that they would have a little more decency then to go and parade around the fact the they are unhappy in their marriages and that they cope with this unhappiness by having an affair. I think that’s a pretty crummy thing to do to your spouse no matter how unhappy you might be with them.
What astonished me was the effect that alcohol had on everyone. Nick is not a sauce king (that's what Mathiesen said today) but even he gets a little tipsy. What really flabbergasted me was when Tom utterly dominated Myrtle in the nose. Ouch! Don't drink, it kills brain cells and makes you do crazy things. Oh yeah, I was also taken aback when Tom bought Myrtle a puppy. What's she going to do with a puppy? -Tony
...Tom punched Myrtle in the nose. I know he is not the nicest guy around, but he did not come across as abusive to me. I really hate it when men do that. Another thing that surprised me is that Nick does not care more that Tom is cheating on Nick's cousin, Daisy. I mean, Tom actually took him to see his little somethin' somethin' on the side and Nick does nothing about it. I am deeply disappointed with Nick. It makes me sad.
...that Tom took Nick to see his girlfriend. Tom think about it. Why would Nick want to meet the girl that Tom is cheating on his cousin with? It also surprise me that Tom punched M in the face. What the heck?? Mrs. S ... you seem to make us read a lot of abusive books.... what is up with that?
i was very surprised that tom didnt try to keep his affair secret. he was very open about it. i was very surprised. it was surprising when tom broke that girls nose.
I was surprised when Tom took Nick to see Myrtle. I also didn't expect Myrtle to be married, but I guess I should have seen that one coming. I was also surprised when Tom punched Mrs. Wilson. I mean I know he's not a gentleman, but he could have a little more class. Especially for punching her in the nose for saying Daisy's name. I think someone needs to go to anger management. Or just plain therapy. Either one.
Like probably most everyone else in class, I was surprised about the relationship between Tom and Daisy. It is a very, very open relationship for being just an affair. It's almost like no body thinks there is anything wrong with their relationship. If this same book were written in modern times then it would be highly publicized and Tom would easily be shamed(ie. Bill Clinton). Ring a bell to anyone else?
I was surprised when Tom and Nick just got up and left the apartment when the girls were fighting. They got up like absolutely nothing was going on and no one was fighting or bleeding. I just thought it was odd. I also was a bit surprised in the way Nick acted when meeting Tom's mistress. He just sort of sat back and did not really say anything. He pretty much acted like it was all o.k. for the affair to be going on. I think he should have done something about or at least showed some concern towards it.
I'm most surprised that Tom broke Myrtle's nose. It was just out of nowhere, completely random. I mean Myrtle was being annoying by continuing to say Daisy's name and I'm not surprised Tom reacted to it, but breaking her nose?! A bit drastic, especially since he is cheating on Daisy. Now I'm going to be really repetitive of everyone else and say that I was surprised that Tom took Nick to meet Myrtle in the first place. He's so open about his affair. It bothers me. Also, what was with the puppy? (Just to warn you, the following might get a little ASPCA/PETA rant-ish) Myrtle decides she wants a puppy like it's a new purse or something. You can't just decide you want a pet because you see a cute little doggy for sale. She can't be responsible enough for a dog if she treats it like another material thing like a dress or a bag. It's a living being; this is how so many dogs end up in the shelters without homes or someone to love them. (>_<#) Myrtle bothers me just about as much as Tom. She’s too careless, about the puppy and her affair.
... that Tom would be so stupid as to take Nick to meet Myrtle. Even though everyone knows he is having an affair, knowing it is going on and knowing the person are two totally different things. To think that it would be all perfectly fine to take Nick to meet the girl Tom is cheating on his cousin with is ridiculous. I still like this book more than I have liked any of the others that we have read so far.
