After I finished this novel I thought that I'm in the middle. I've met people who absolutely love this book and people who say they hate it (and that it's worse than Lolita, which is about a pedophile lol) Me, I'm in between. I didn't love it, but it wasn't the worse thing I've ever read. I'm indifferent.
I don't like the ending. It was kinda hilarious that Myrtle was run over, especially funny since Daisy was driving. But I didn't like that Wilson went and killed Gatsby. Like the kangaroos say, "WTF Mate?" (hehe.) It's especially bad because Gatsby is definitely not the one who deserves it: either 1)Daisy who was actually driving the car or 2)Tom who was Myrtle's actual lover. Not Gatsby! I probably could have dealt with this ending, however, if Tom and Daisy hadn't stayed together. I've hated Tom this whole book, but now I hate Daisy just as much. She decided to stay with a lying, cheating, racist loser who just caused the death of her first love?!? Grrr... I have loads of problems with girls going back to someone who cheated on them. I've learned from experience that it never works!!! Daisy is an idiot and if she's going to stay with Tom, well then I hope he cheats on her and cheats on her over and over again because she deserves it!...here ends my rant. (^_^)
actually reall liked it. Everything was pretty fitting and irony of Daisy hitting M was definatly worth the boring intro. The fact that Gatsby dies ties in the whole "if you work hard for what you want in the end you will get screwed" theme we are going for. At the end I really ended up hating Tom, I think everyone knew I hated once we found out he was cheating on his wife but the fact that both Daisy and Tom let G take the blame blew me away... Kinda. Tom tells us that Daisy is pretty easy to manipulate but I didn't think she would be that easily manipulated. She said she loved G but then she pretty much sends him to sleep with the fish (ha ha Matt...Fish) when she lets Tom tell Wilson that it was all G's fault. Daisy is one of those people that just get whatever they want out of life. It is hard to feel sorry for her anymore when she just throws away her chances of being happy...not just once but TWICE!
What have we learned? 1. Don't trust people with the names of Daisy or Tom. 2. If you are having an affair hid the dog collar/leash things. 3. Don't drink...people will take advantage of you and you will die like Dan Cody. 4. Girls if a guy tries that hard to get you...he is for reall...or a stalker...Your choice. 5. Guys don't cheat or it leads to the rest of your life being hell. 6. Fitzgerald is rather morbid, a little creepy, and would maybe get along with Poe. 7. Matt is crazy. (we didn't really learn this...it was reinforced.) 8. We killed a lot of trees because of all the sticky notes we used in this class. 9. Don't leave your research paper til a couple days before it is due...Cough Cough. 10. Natalie likes to rant... a lot.
Hmm hoping this isn't due today or everyone is going to die or cry or lie or fly or be shy or fry or buy or bye or tie or spy or ask why or be spry or poke you in the eye or sigh or hit that guy or throw a pie or eat some rye or really try or pry or be really wry. They might also add or be bad or call brad and chad or be clad in something like a glad bag or tell their dad or start a new fad or be real glad or feel they've been had or kill some poor lad or be really mad or sleep on a pad or start wearing plad or feel real rad or even feel kinda sad, just a tad.
I cant find my source cards so my works cited is going to be even later hich means my grade will drop even more. Cant take it anymore! (Matt Knocks Himself Out)
After finishing the book i felt strangely happy. This is probably the first book in this class i really enjoyed. I was disappointed with Gatsby's death--I guess I just do not like seeing someone who has done so much for himself go out like that. I am not completely sure, but i think he killed himself. It is a selfish way to go and i never saw it coming from a guy like Gatsby. I do disagree with Natalie's view of Daisy though because if Daisy would have left Tom, she would have been no better than him. Also, I think that even if Daisy had stayed with Gatsby, things would have never worked out. I cannot really back this up with hard evidence, it is just a feeling i have. Tom is a monster and all, but i just dont see it working out between Gatsby and Daisy. I learned that sometimes when your dreams are realized, they are not all that you had hoped. That is depressing and disappointing to me.
After I finished the novel I was just sort of like uhhhh okay?? I wished that Daisy and Gatsby were able to get together, like the forbidden love type of thing. I don't know I just kind of like that idea. Thought it would something cool and unexpected. Not that Gatsby dying and Mertyl were not unexpected or anything, but I wanted something more out the book. To me this book is not one of my favorites but it is not the worse book that I have ever read either. I am still confused on exactly it is that Gatsby did for a living other then pretty much stalk Daisy into loving him and throw big parties in hope he would get noticed by Daisy by some random chance. I really do not like Tom, never have since the beginning of the novel. He is just a hpyocritical jerk who cheats on his wife and does not seem to think there is anything wrong with doing it until he finds out that his wife is doing it to him. Nick, he is a cool guy and sadly he just got stuck in between friends.
I thought that there were parts I liked and other parts I didn't. But if I had to compare it to a certain other book which I will not mention the name of, the Great Gatsby receives a gold star. I did not like the fact that nobody came to Gatsby's funeral except for like 3 people. I thought more people would show up. I'm really mad at Tom b/c he told Wilson whose car it was and then Wilson went and killed Gatsby. I also dont like the fact that Tom and Daisy get to go and live happily. Of course if you think about it, they deserve each other. One is completely selfish and the other one cheats every 2 minutes. Mrs. S, can't we have at least one smart woman character in a book we read? please? it doesnt even have to be a main character. I think Wilson is very slow if he cant figure out it was Tom that Myrtle was cheating with. I dont know if its true, but if it is, it was nice that Gatsby bought his dad a new house.
on a side note-i dont think i've ever complained about so many books in one english class, just so you know Mrs. S. -alaina
after i finished the novel i thought that it was great. Although my thoughts on how it would end were wrong, i still thought that the ending was acceptable. The book was written very well. Fitzgerald is a great writer. I can see why this book is considered one of the best. I enjoyed reading this book. to tell the truth i kind of forced myself to finish the other books but i was excited to keep reading this one. After finishing this book i thought that this class was over but then i remembered that we still have a lot more important stuff to do.
After I finished this novel, I found that I really did like I’m not going to lie I was a little worried in the beginning that I wouldn’t like it didn’t seem to impressive at first so I was pleased to find that I actually liked it. I was not surprised that Gatsby died mostly because someone told me that he did but also because somebody had to die and of course it had to be someone I liked but I guess if Gatsby hadn’t die then it wouldn’t be a very good ending so his death was good for something. Anyway I thought that the book had to a lot to offer in the sense of what not to do. Like for one don’t drive when you are upset it really doesn’t end well. Although I did think that it was funny that Myrtle was killed by Daisy. Another good lesson is don’t cheat on your wife or vise versa that really doesn’t turn out for you too well either although Tom did kind of get what he deserved he didn’t treat Daisy very well so in turn she left him for another guy and on top of that she killed his mistress even though she didn’t know that at the time. All in All I have to say that this book turned out pretty well true there were some parts in it that I though were pretty dry but the rest of the book made up for it I might just read another one of Fitzgerald’s novels.
I think that this novel was pretty good. But it is not even close to being my favorite. I did not like that Gatsby died. Even though I suspected that he would. I did not like that Daisy stayed with Tom. I think that she should have left him. The last big thing that I did not like is that Nick shook Tom's hand at the end. Nick knows that Tom was just as guilty as Gatsby. I did like that Jordan and Nick agreed on breaking up. Having the biggest liar in the world living with the most honest person in the world would not be a good idea. I liked this novel more than the Scarlet Letter but they both ended horribly.
After I finished this novel, I felt really sympathetic for Nick. His entire life is collapsing around him. His friend dies, his girlfriend leaves him, and he just has a lot to deal with right now. He's a nice, honest man and he doesn’t deserve any of this. I didn't like how Gatsby died. He should have gone out in a better way like rescuing a crippled kid from a speeding bus in front of Daisy. Then Daisy would be like oh man that was so heroic, I wish I was with him, too bad he's dead now. I think Tom is the epitome of evil. He gave Wilson Gatsby's address and by doing that he pretty much signed the death certificate. I've read much better books, but for English class this was pretty decent. I'll give it one thumb up. -Tony
After finishing this book, I wanted to jump into the book and shoot Mr. Wilson. Twice. Sideways. As you have probably guessed, Mrs.Svoboda, I do not like this book. But that does not mean I don't like it. I have probably never liked a character in all the books I have read more than Gatsby.(James Herriot might top him, but anyway...)This is one of those books that I could enjoy reading over and over again and still hate more and more everytime. Daisy ended up being my least favorite character(DIE! DIE! DIE!). I blame Gatsby's death on her. And I pretty much just died of happiness when I read the blog and it said our portfolios weren't due until the 20th...HALLELUJAH!
After I finished this novel, I laid the book rather sharply down on the ground and gave a sigh of relief knowing that I had probably just finished the hardest part of Honors English III. I slowly began to fall asleep (it was 1:20 Sunday night) when I was scared awake by a disastrous thought. That is not the end! WE STILL HAVE RESEARCH PAPERS! Someone does not like me....grr.
Anyways after I finished the novel I realized how crazy life can get if you make a decision but do not stick to it. For example, the cheaters, Daisy and Tom. They made a decision one day that they would be a legal couple for the rest of their lives. That decision lasted probably a whole of twenty minutes. Tom cheated on Daisy constantly ("but he always came back to her" *insert slight eye rolling here*) and in turn Daisy takes a shot at this phenomenon by cheating on Tom with Mr. Jay Gatsby. And now, as we see at the end of the novel, this leads to the death or disappearance or just lack of thought about all said people. See what happens when you cheat on a cheater? People die. And not by common shankage either.
uh...wow. i really enjoyed the book. the characters and how they interacted fit very naturally into Fitzagerald's plot. I think everyone has a gatsby that they know or maybe they even see themselves as one. That guy that has everything and just seems untouchable but on the inside he is really searching the most diligently. I think there could have been some happier endings to the story but i wouldnt want it changed. The controversial death of Gatsby seems to fit well with his very controversial life. Fitgerald did good... I liked it.
After i finished the novel i realized that i am totally in love with this class. I read the blog and instantly feel a tad bit better about life. About the book, i think it has a lot to offer and i did rather enjoy it. It all ends a bit comically because everyone dies but not for the right reasons necessarily. Idk it was good but i can't think anymore. Loss of brain cells. Thank you research paper.
After I finished this novel I thought it was the best one that we have read. There was not ever really a part where I was bored and I really got into it. I don't like that Daisy and Tom just disappear. It's alot weird. The fact that no one shows up to G's funeral except for his dad, nick, the preacher and owl-eyes to the burial is really quite funny. I find it funny because Gatsby was the type of guy, in what he did for money, that normally Nick would not have liked much either. So if it hadn't been for the fact that he was his neighbor or the whole Daisy thing, I don't think even he would have gone to the funeral. In the words of Gatsby's father, "That just goes to show you, don't it?"
