The thing I would change is our reliance on foreign fuel sources. It means that we cannot control the prices of our fuel, and it is becoming pretty ridiculous. Gas prices are one of our nation's biggest concerns at the moment, and I think there is more we can do to fix the problem. We could start to use renewable fuel sources, or even just try and find more fuel in America. Either way, it would sure be nice to not have to pay $120 dollars to fill up my pickup.

There's not many things I can think of to change, I know that there are tons but I'm just limited-minded like that... Will said something about gas prices. I was initially going to talk about some people who are just... um bad, but that would not include why they became that way and its impossible to change well... society to your likings. A perfect world would be nice but, nothing in this world is perfect and never will be.

---

The other idea I had was the concern for global warming, it's not something just in our country, but its involved with the world. production of CO² has been increasing and is the scientific cause of Global warming, there is no debate about weather we are causing it, it's just the answer. CO² trends are spiked this generation and are causing irregular activities in our world. A change must be acted upon for less pollution. Companies can spend more for quality technological advances that help our world. There are some people who do not care about this event, they would care if they could just "Listen" and see into the future. If I could change something, it would be focused on improving the environment by higher technology not in just our country, but the world. If left ignored, catastrophic things may occur in our lifetime, if not then our children will have to go through it...if they can survive.

One thing? Well, there are many things that I believe could change for the better, but..

It's not exactly the country I'm worried about the most, it's the people. I just wish that the horrible reactions to certain things could change. This kind of applies to what we talked about in class.. when someone gets angry and decides to bring a gun to school and start blowing people's heads off.. yeah, that's just STUPID. I also dislike how people judge others by how they look. This also kind of applies to what we talked about in class. Just because someone is black, or muslim, or whatever it is that they are.. that shouldn't prohibit them from going for their dreams or doing what they are good at. So only white men get the right to dream and have it come true?... Like I said, STUPID. Kids walk around our school all the time ignoring those who don't seem to be wearing the same types of clothes that they are. I just think that's a big thing people need to work on, along with helping everyone out. Seriously, everyone needs someone to talk to or eat lunch with. Hasn't anyone ever seen the movie or read the book Pay It Forward? Well.. start taking actions, hopefully people have GOOD reactions to them that don't require gun using and then poeple should PAY IT STINKING FORWARD! Like I said, it's more the people and their actions that I would like to do some tweaking to.

No offense guys.. just in general. :D

Hmmm...Adam didn't post first...again...not a good sign. Anyway I agree with Adam, again, nothing in this country, or even the world, will ever be "perfect", but we can make small influences to make things better.

One thing that really sticks out to me, among the hundreds of others, is the energy saving and recycling in the country, so I guess I would like to change how much energy the country uses and how much we recycle. The Go Green program that is going around is trying to improve the conservation of energy and recycling around the country and maybe it will spread around the world. Baby steps!!!

Right now our country uses a ton of energy to power cars, houses, communities, etc...and I think that we can use different form of energy that won't pollute the air, land, and water we use. For example, solar windmills are a great way to collect energy (they are expensive though...) and it won't hurt the environment. Of course there are others, but nothing will make a difference unless we all make an effort to turn off/ unplug/whatever else it is to power down something that uses energy like computers. I'm sure that everyone leaves their computer on instead of turning it off the rest of the day...I do...(bad me!) So yeah. There are many other ways we can save energy and also many ways to generate clean energy.

As for recycling, I notice that many recycleable items are thrown into the trash at schools!!! BAD!!! If we would recycle, then the landfills would not overflow and we could stop making more products that don't decompose. Paper is ok because it does decompose after a while, but unlike paper, plastic will sit for hundreds of years!!! We can all help to clean up the earth and with that, other problems like Will's gas prices and Adam's global warming might even become less severe.

I definitely agree that our reliance on foreign oil is ridiculous. It leaves our country with the negative obligation of funding unstable or extremist governments. This problem doesn't end at just an oil crisis, but an energy crisis in general. Everything we rely on and consume requires oil to be made; this then has a horrible effect on the environment. So, my solution involves finding a safe, reliable and renewable source of energy that we can make domestically. Once we focus on the larger issues at hand, the smaller problems will work themselves out. It's time Americans think outside the box and make an effort to benefit themselves. Basically, the one thing I would change is the unwilligness to change our nation.

I share the same thoughts as everyone else, and that makes it hard to choose just one thing that I would change about the world. However, I would have to say that the amount of wastes we put out needs to change the most, and by change, I mean drastically decrease. The USA is one of the world's largest CO2 producers, and we don't recycle enough to make up for the carbon dioxide emissions. What we need to do is really jump on board with the Go Green project(like Dan said. Yay for Dan!) The other day, when I was at Wal-Mart, I say some shirts there that were made out of recycled plastic bottles. You couldn't even tell the difference between those shirts and regular ones. Cool! If we could come up with more ways to reuse our recyclables and reduce CO2 emissions, we could really clean up our country. LET'S GO GREEN!!!!!

Oh yeah, hey Adam, how do you make the little 2 in CO2???

Anonymous said...

Um.. the little 2 is a superscipt unicode thinger.

Hold Alt and press 0178 on the numberpad for superscript 2.

(Assuming your on a PC)

You can see all the symbol thingys by clicking start, run and typing in "charmap.exe" without quotes.

ummm i dont know we have things that need to be fixed like like every other country...maybe not so much the country but the people(like marisa said) we could all work on our acceptance of different things and people. the whole presidency thing is a very good example of it. also another thing is extremists who do things to get in the paper and thats the reason that they do it and its ALL OVER the news! i can understand reporting it but our media takes things TOO FAR (like going into peoples personal lives just to bring out "scandals")its none of theirs or our business. another thing is the whole oil problem we have so many resources other than oil in our own back yards....if you havnt noticed its always windy in NE why dont we use that to our advantage? those giant wind milly things would be really worth it. i guess there are a lot of things that need to be changed now that i think about it.....

Anonymous said...

Well, ok then....That little conversation was very interesting, i must say.

Props to Adam for being smarter than us average human beings.

Anonymous said...

hmm..i can't really think of anything right now...hold that thought...few minutes later..I would probably say switch over to metrics! i mean its sooooo much easier! and international relations would be..well idk if it'll be affected, but it might. the explain part, right, well base ten for everything is much simpler than memorizing that there's 5280 ft in a mile, 12" in a foot, 16 oz in a pound, etc. and people already use base ten for the number system anyway. Also, in metrics, switching between units of weight, length, and volume is just changing the units! how easy is that? VERY!..ok i'm done with the exclaimation marks now..after this one!..now i'm done

Im not totally sure what one thing i would change. I think the U.S. is a lot better off than many other countries, that does not mean that there is no room for improvment. I agree that we are too dependant on foreign fuel, but i also think we are much too wasteful. So i think if i could only change one thing, i would change the way americans recycle. I absolutely hate going to the landfill because it is such a depressing sight. All of the trash from our homes in piles is just not a pleansant sight. i think americans need to think before they throw. if we can reuse the stuff that we would normally throw away, we would help out the enviornment so much.

Anonymous said...

Ok, so I don't know how this is going to sound, but here it goes... I really don't think we should change this country. Now stay with me because right now ur probably thinking "What!!?" so let explain my reasoning. I agree that America has got alot of problems, like drugs, violence, the poor, hatred, just to name a few. But if you look at the big picture, life is pretty good. Compared to many other countries, we are so lucky. Yeah it sucks that we have to import feul from other countries (It cost me $60 to fill my tank!!!!) But for some people in different countries it takes a month to even earn $60.
In conclusion, (notice my great transition!) I think the US is a great place to live and being perfect is not as important as people think it is. Because if every one was happy all the time our music would start to suck.

first who asked if we can post before class

second holy moly adam stop being sooo smart at computers

And finally, i once again agree with everyone who has said that the united states reliance on foreign oil is a huge problem. i also agree with the coments on hurting the environment and stupid people's action, aka guns at school. So i guess everyone pretty much already took most of my ideas escept one. I think that if i could change one thing it would be the wastefulness of people in general. This, as you can see does not only go for americans but for every other country as well. People do not seem to be worried about waste these days with the huge landfills, and the large amounts of money being spent on nothingness. Now dont get me wrong i fit right in with this, it is kind of human nature. We all want everything that we see and if you have the money to get what you want you do. Then the old stuff just gets thrown out. And food! Aamericans along with others waste so much food. We spend lots of money on the food that we want and then we eat half and toss the rest in the trash. What is that about? But yeah so i guess that is pretty petty in comparison to the issues of now but that's kinda what i think.

Like everyone else I can think of many different ways this country could change for the better. If I were to pick the main one I would agree with Marisa in the fact that people need to change their attitudes and in some cases their lives themselves. But if the people need to change something then I would agree with Dan about our energy problem or since I’m reading the book Alas, Babylon I’ll throw this one out there: nuclear weapons.

I’ll start with nuclear weapons. Once again I don’t think it’s our main problem, it was just brought to my attention because of my literature circle book. Nuclear weapons aren’t necessary. If we were going to bomb someone who terrorized our country or something along those lines there’s no way we would be able to kill just them without killing others and nobody in there right mind should be able to kill an innocent person. If one person launches missiles then the enemies will be able to detect it and they will launch there’s and if there are more then two people in the conflict then pretty much everything goes up. There’s a quote by Albert Einstein, I think, that says “I don’t know what we’ll be fighting with in WWIII but I do know what be will be fighting with in WWIV: sticks and stones.”

Our main problem is that our country uses too much energy and if we keep going at this rate we won’t last long. I know it’s too expensive for most people to buy those new energy saving cars or the fact that there are not very many ways to make energy without destroying the environment some. Besides all this people can still save energy by not using as much on a daily basis so companies don’t need to make as much. People can do this by turning off lights, TV, using less water. You know all the stuff we have been told to do since we were four. We can also use less gas for our car by getting it checked once every so many miles and changing the oil regularly. All this will also help the ozone and global warming which is also a problem we need to solve. Until companies can perfect those new cars or we can find a cheaper way to use wind energy, we need to use less energy ourselves.

If I could change one thing about this country to make it better....hm...this kind of relates to the class topic today. Politics is totally...overated. Today and back in the day it has been about who is popular, who has the most money, or even who has done what. To me it's not what you do, who you are, or what you've done. It is truely who you are as an individual. The person you are at heart. So much in politics is based on what a person has done. Shouldn't it be about what they are going to try and do to improve this country as a whole? We should be more worried about improving it and quit worrying about if someone has a different religion, skin color, or if they are a male or female. A person is more than meets the eye. I think we as an entire country need to stop worrying about how someone looks or how they appear to be. We should all try to look within a person instead of judging on what they appear to be.

In this country there are many good things. On the other hand though there can be bad things too. One thing about this country I would like to change is about people's perspective of other people. In other words the two big ones are religion and politics. Politics in a way is what makes this country how it is. I think how some people are perceived because of past history is wrong. People are not all the same, just because some others make mistakes does not mean that everyone of those people is that way. Another change could be politics. I personally think that people should be more focused on what people will do better than popularity. Or what someone has done in the past.Religion is also a big deal. People should have freedom to believe what they like as long as not forced on others. For me this is a couple things I think that need to be changed.

I would change the fact that anyone that wants a gun has one. The right should be reserved for the people that use them in the right ways. Not everyone should be allowed a gun. There should also not be any concealed weapons because of all the controversy that follows with them. Guns should be used only for hunting, sport and sometimes war. Really there should only be guns that can be used for sport, no hand guns or assault rifles. This would help with the occurrence of violent crime.

Anonymous said...

I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said. The gas price doesn't really affect me... I don't drive much. BIKES RULE THE WORLD!!! Anyway, one thing I'd change is the fact that we do think we're better than everyone else. Seriously. United States' democracy will not work in every country. Great Britain is perfectly happy, right? Now, I'm not saying that I'd be happy in these other countries, but if it's working for them, why change it? Why toot our horn and say "We've got the best government. Not that there's anything wrong with yours, but ours is better." It's not just the common people that do this either. The government, the press, etc. RIDICULOUS in my opinion.

Ah, yes, the whole "green" issue. We, as a country, need to have better options than styrofoam and plastic. (By the way, the inventor of styrofoam was American. The inventor of plastic was living in America. And we're still producing it... in America.) Just an example... School lunches are one thing we could improve on. Use paper plates, put them in a recycling bin when finished, and remake paper plates for students to use for years to come. There we go. Go green. I think we are on our way to becoming green, but until the people of the US have more options, we're stuck the way we are.

So, yeah. America's a pretty cool place. Can't wait until I'm 18 and actually get these rights people keep talking about... and maybe not have to use styrofoam...

to um... and NO, I don't think it's illegal to post before class. Don't know why you would, but I don't think anyone's going to complain.

So i pretty mush think our people need to change. I think we need to fix our attitudes towards people different then us and stop accusing our superiors for doing things the way we want. no way im spending another second on this im about ready to beat myself so.... yeah there we go. and i would have freaking won the novel award i spent a lot of time and thinking on that one. If I could change one thing about this country, it would be our obsession with war. In my opinion, war is a dangerous thing that not only damages relationships between countries, but it also tears apart families. War is also dangerous because it forces people to kill one another for a cause. While it may seem like a noble cause, we forget that we are actually fighting human beings. We turn our enemies into objects to make it easier to kill them. What we need to remember is that they are people too. They live and breathe and love and hate the same way that we do. Honestly, my biggest change for the country would be to steer its people in a more peaceful direction. GO PEACE!!

BTW--I am really enjoying these. You have gone above and beyond any other class. It is fabulous!!!!

um...one thing i would change..there is alot that could be changed but i have to agree with megan and marisa, in the fact that the problem is not so much in the country, but the people in them. We need to be more open to change and try to work together. We need to think of each others needs before ours. That way we aren't so selfish and we would get along better...
..i wish i could just change ppl make them belive the right thing...but unlike laws or objects that you can just change by hand...people are living things and you can't just force them to believe something, it will take some convincing. but if we all work together we could make it work!

I agree with everyone else that there's not really a BIG concern for America right now. Sure, we have some issues, but we have plans to control them, and we have leaders to back them up. I would talk about the election, however, I believe all of you would argue with me and my point would not get through. GO MCCAIN. Anyway, I agree with the fuel alternatives, but unless you have a way to change it yourself, you have to continue buying it until a new leader figures it out (Once again referencing the election). I don't really have anything to write about, and I know the world isn't perfect (that's what makes it so cool) so....hmmmmm...I think we fought enough in class.

Anonymous said...

The one thing i would change about our country would be the way people perceive new ideas. if something happens that is out of the ordinary, people freak out and start arguing with each other. an example of this happened when Obama became one of the candidates in the election, people were immediately opposed to the idea because he was black. i wish people could just look at others and see them as another person. Just like everyone else, i agree that compared to some nations, america is doing pretty good. we have a great education system and our poverty levels aren't as bad as some countries. however, there are many smaller problems we need to work out.

If i could change one thing about this country i would change the fact that most people that are making the most money are actors or profesional athletes. They make millions even billions of dollars for having fun. Yet we have teachers and other important positions who are getting underpaid even though there job is important because they are the ones in charge of our future sort of. So i would change it so that the important jobs were we need people to work would have good salaries and the jobs which are more fun than work would be the ones who get paid less.

Preface:
I hereby decree that this country is in terminal peril. Oh! Grim outlook is thine truth, people will fall, and rise, fall, fall, and rise again, just as you play the "shuttes and ladders" (Hasbro Inc.). One can relate this dismal place, filled with such unholy's like Mickey-D's, Bucks of the Star, and American Idol, to the grim grim fate: apocalypse. WoOeEoOeE! Who shall save us from this time of immense trauma? Will it be you? Will it be the devil's advocate? Will it be Chad from Alltel? Obviously, there are many things in this country that could/need to be made better. However, there are some very prevalent issues. Among these is our energy policy. Now I don't follow politics too awfully close, but I know this is a huge issue. I also know that we refuse to drill on our own soil. I think this is necessary, at least until we figure out a better solution to the energy crisis. "Go green" is great, but a couple people in every town doing it is not gonna make much of a difference in this world. We, as a nation, need to get everyone, or the vast majority, to get on board with going green. There are so many simple ways to do this; we, as Americans, are just lazy. Plain and simple. Hopefully, whichever candidate is elected will make some major improvements in this area.

Way to go Gilly... I like your post. I think it's dumb that some people get paid a butt ton for a talent they were most likely born with (in most cases), and then those who work really hard trying to make money so they can raise a family... well they just get the sucky end of the deal.

Anonymous said...

Well, I definitly agree with everyone else on their views, but I think one of the problems would be our non-recycling. I know that we aren't the worst, but we are pretty close.
Okay, I play sports, you know this...if there was a recycling bin, I would throw away all of my bottles there. I have like, probably twenty empty bottles in my car, that I'm just going to throw away in the trash. If the towns and cities would put recycling bins around ball parks and tennis courts, we would be saving a lot of time and money AND helping the environment. Maybe I'll start that someday. :)

haha

bad joke

anyhow... If I could change anything about the country to make it better I would say that I would change the people of the world

People need to:
~stop being close minded
~care more about others
~be open to new ideas
~not think lower of people who may not be exactly like them
~try to help the environment
~stop abuse
~stop and think about the little things in life
~appreciate the life that was given to them
~never stop dreaming

I just think that there is too much dislike of things in this world and too little appreciation of what is given to them.

Public schools offer a free education to children and teens. Why do so many of them not try to use the tools that are given to them?

i just don't understand sometimes
