Journal 9

Where have we seen "witch-hunts" in modern day America? Why do these things still happen? Is there anything we can do to prevent such situations from happening? Explain.

Hmmm...these journals are becoming more involved now instead of personal...anyway!!! The one thing that really strikes me as a witch hunt today is the constant roasting of celebs from the paparazzi. For example, Sarah Palin is being attacked by the press and media. For my example, I guess that this still happens because we (the people of the world) are just naturally curious to figure things out. Especially those of famous people because we like to make fun of them.(Don't we do enough of that here...?) It's something to do to fill in the empty void of no life that everyone else seems to have... As for doing something about it, I don't see that much can be done about it unless the population decides to suddenly stop meddeling in other's affairs... Even if the government put down new laws, people would still try to get information out of the celebraties. Sure it's entertaining, but it can be very hurtful to others (celebs) and ruins them. *cough* Brittney Spears *cough* Did I just type that?! Anyway...

I need to just type this out on a word document and spell check and grammer check before posting...

When did the heading change to "Welcome to the Fun!" ???

O... theres a Journal today...

Sorta ignored the OMG its updated button...

I personally think these "Witch-Hunts" are everywhere today, why? because there are people everywhere, all with different thoughts about other groups of people and their religion. America states that we have the right to Freedom of Religion, many may view that as good, some do not believe it as they are apparently being targeted for their "unnatural" activities. Magic, for example is looked down on by Christians, they say it is power from the demons, and if you indulge into it you will go to Hell.
Anti-race or racist assemblages that hunt just by race despite the law because they truly believe tha..

I seriously think I am going in the wrong direction in this...

I QUIT... I don't feel like doing this right now... I'll do it later.

This bothers me while attempting to sleep that this is not done... I guess I'll finish it...

...truly believe that "om*g they don't belong on the face of this earth" or they could be delusional and a group causes them moral panic... or... its because they're just n00bs and like to kill people. We could attempt to change these things, but trying to change thousands of people that believe what they believe would be tremendously difficult... also people in the USA have the right to believe what they want to... so it would not be a smooth ride in attempt to change, it could possibly be a bad idea.

Mebbe I should add to that... but I don't feel like it...

Bah... my name didn't show up right... Guess those characters are not supported...

and I tried to put a Picture on here but It gave me: Your HTML cannot be accepted: Tag is not allowed.. =(

You should make it so we CAN... or maybe that could be a bad thing since our home internet...s are not filtered..... with this particular class...

Today in America we see “Which Hunts” just about everywhere. I would consider racism a modern day which hunt because people back then would accuse someone of being a which because they didn’t like them or to make them inferior just like today. This still happens today because everyone has different ideas and can’t be made to agree with other. For example if someone did something to another person then that person might, instead of taking out on that person, they take it out on their entire group or race. This is their opinion and nobody could make them think otherwise. There is even an amendment protecting their right to think and speak how they would like. There is not really a way to stop this from happening. I guess we could do what was done to the small pox disease: kill off everything in one quick stroke but this time we are dealing with people instead of a virus so it wouldn’t work too well. Plus, it would be immoral, we would be sinking down to their level, and it would create more and worse problems then we already have. Because of this, modern day “Which Hunts” will probably be around for quite some time.

The "witch-hunts" of America today would probably be easily compaired to the KKK and racist groups. Like the "witch-hunters", they judge people for being different and want them to be gone from the earth, just like how racist people think that different races are bad for the world. Both of these groups are really, really dumb. They all need to open their eyes and see how stupid they really are. Just because someone does not have the normal lifestyle or same relgious views, does not mean that they're a witch. And just because someone has a different color of skin does not mean that they are bad people. Idiots.

You okay, Adam?

Everyone has their opinion about what is normal and if someone doesnt fit it then they are different. so this leads to some people, like the kkk, acting out and killing or hurting people that dont "fit in." In other words yes there are "witch hunts" today and they are a problem. There isnt much we can do to stop it except being a good example and treating others good no matter what they are like.

"Witch-hunts" not only happen due to large-scale issues, but they can also be found in places as simple as high schools. In America, one of the biggest witch-hunts is aimed at gay people and Mexican immigrants. People want a constant target to blame for hardships. Americans dislike Mexican immigrants because many illegal immigrants do not pay taxes. Muslims are also attacked because they are labled as terrorists due to the ongoing war. People are constantly searching for the definition of "normal." When someone defies the social standards that we make up, they are labled. This is why gay people have suffered so much in the American system. Even in high school, it is much easier to point the finger than it is to accept others. The only way to prevent these situations is to approach them with an open mind. An open mind is key to acceptance. People don't have to agree with each other, but they don't have to scorn each other either. If we tried to be more accepting of people, we wouldn't have wars. In fact, we would be looking at world peace. :)

There are many modern day "witch hunts." Theres not really one in particular that stands out more than another. But they all stem from a sense of paranoia and fear of the unknown. When the average person if confronted with something new, whether it be a culture, moral or lifestyle, they panic. They will do anything to rationalize their fear and calm their own insecurities. This is why minorities are labeled and celebritites are scrutinized in the media. As soon as people can be comfortable with themselves, worldwide tolerance will be achievable.

....and Adam, you might want to check for a gas leak in your house. I think something is messing with your head.

Wow! i think you all have very valid points. When i first read the blog, i had no idea what i was going to write. I did not think about things such as racism as being a "witch-hunt" but now i totally see where you all are coming from.

so i guess i would have to agree with everyone about racism being a form of "witch-hunting". a lot of people turn their heads when it comes to racism because they dont want to deal with it. they would like to think that it is a thing of the past, but it is not. it is a very present issue that we need to deal with. People are always making assumptions about others because of their appearence. it is just the way people are.

i do believe that it will get better in the next couple of generations because more kids are growing up with people of all races. our generation is much more open-minded about such things but that doesnt mean there arent those people that are always going to think that they are superior to everyone else.

Anonymous said...

wow this is a hard one!!! i think modern day witch hunts are mostly racist people they tend to be the only people that search out others to persecute and try to get rid of....also you could tie in countries trying to make a perfect society i cant really think of anything more lol

I agree with Nikki. I had no idea what to write the first million times I read the blog!

Everywhere we look in America there are "witch hunts." These all steming from the fear of difference. No one wants their beliefs to be confronted. Which often happens when people are forced to see "the other sides of life." People often have trouble dealing with people who sre different then they are which helps to create racist groups, sexist movements, and other forms of ahte gorups. these seem to be the most obivious forms of 'witch hunts" in our modern day society. I also agree with Katie's statemnet about modern high schools too. In our high schools today there is lots of hatred toward gays and "aliens." It is hard to believe that we "the country of opportunity" could have soo many prejudices but we most definately do! This, I believe though, is probably taught to the younger generation by their parents and the thoughts and ideas impressed upon them by the society that surrounds them.

For the record. . .I have been saying that Adam was crazy all along.

Adam-> That was epic ADD.

Witch hunts are all around us now. in society, we blame the outcasts for problems. Something goes missing in a store-it's the shady guy with a scruffy beard and ratty coat that is instantly suspected. We don't always act on these suspicions, but we have them all around us. We've talked about the Muslim issue in class so much, I don't want to go into that, but there's one example. Oooh, look, Muslim, bad, terrorist, let's lock him up because he wants to kill us all! (in reality, he's your neighbor who made cookies for you when you moved in. Nice try, but EPIC FAIL!!!). Hey look, a teenager is dressed in a hoodie with a skull on it and has a skateboard and has funky hair and heavy make-up. it's ten o'clock at night. is s/he doing anything illegal? Wait, that could be something illegal. Hey, kid-here's a ticket. Take couneling and go to juvie. (Again, EPIC FAIL! S/he's the amazing artist at school who has some individuality, great curiosity, and some time to kill at ten o'clock at night.)

I noticed something nikki said about the younger generations doing better. I agree, but I think that we will still have these suspicions and judgements, but won't act on them as much as older generations do. Not that we won't have people like that, but as a majority, we do pretty good. Our parents shun people with mohawks, we don't, etc.

We've (meaning our generation) pretty much gotten past the outside image and have gone to a deeper, more intellectual level, but still, we judge by that. I don't have any amazing examples for this one.

Random note for a second-> I just deleted an entire paragraph because I got lost in my little box and had some concentration disorders.

Continuing on... the thing that people can do to prevent these witch-hunts, whether they be intellectually based or appearanced based, is widespread understanding of the situation. If only a few people understand what's going on and are willing to do something about it, they, too, will be accused and hunted down. However, if there is a lot of support and understanding, things can change pretty dramatically.

so yeah. Sorry about the randomness.

Modern day witch hunts...hm...well they're in movies. I know though that they go beyond movies. Wich hunts can happen to normal people maybe not the same way but they do happen. A modern day witch hunt might involve outcasting someone for being different. What I mean by being different is by nationality, popularity, or wealth. It all depends; people make judgements and then they act on them. They may not be hurting the person physically as the did in the Salem Witch Trials but they do mentally/emotionally. Outcasting someone or picking out faults as they did in the Salem witch trials is wrong. Those girls accused those people because they stood out and where different. Before you accuse or suspect someone of something you should make sure you are right or correct in your facts.

Anonymous said...

When watching that movie i thought to myself how can anyone be so cruel? Or believe girls that are obviously acting to get attention. The only modern day "witch hunts" in that actual term are in movies for the most part, but modern day witch hunt could be when someone is picked on for being a little bit differnet than the rest of the bunch. Something of that sort anyway. Similar to modern day witch hunts is bullying. These things happen still today because people want to feel better and higher about themselves. It gives them a high making fun of someone else. Preventing bullying is kind of hard. Talking and doing it are two totally differnet things. Preventing these things from happening can be by telling someone to stop, and standing up for that person who is different even though overcoming fear of going against a group is part of it.

ok.. i completely forgot there was this assignment so here i am at like 11:30pm doing it..btw, what is that mccarthyism hw?

anyway, i don't think literal "witch hunts" are here today, i mean the justice system is wayyy better right? no more spector evidence. but things similar are constantly seen around us.. especially among women, no offense ladies..rumors everywhere, gossip, mudslinging in campaigns, which is just wrong..and much more. it's like no one wants to know about good news, its just espected that people act a certain way and everything, but once they do something wrong, then it's like omg we MUST report this. sorry, bad transitions here, but back to women, it's really hard to be friends with some girls just because of all the drama, i mean people need to just chill and shut up (excuse my language there) it's always like, that 8!tc4 stole my bf or that *hor* or something similar, we are also frequently informed about someone being pregnant or dealing drugs and don't even know if it's true..and i think that's also my story behind the whole cannibal gay man thing

for the record, i was way lost like everyone else...but the whole reading other ppl's posts are just like ohhhhhh lightbulb coming on...and then i went back to read some more ppls and found out how crazy this other asian,,,not me, was....jk

Shoot! I totally forgot about this.AAaaagghhh...I want to sleep!

Mrs. S, let it be totally on your consience(too tired to spell rightly..stoopid grammur)if I appear to be completely, utterly and pitifully tired on Monday. U jus think about that.

Okay, we all get the KKK are our modern day witch hunters, but don't we also tend to persecute gay people? I mean, homosexuals have always been picked on throughout history, and it's not any differnt 2day.(again, 2 tired 2do grammur rightly) Even though Im not sure how comfortable I am with the whole 'gay' concept, I at least treat people the same and dont torment them, like some people in this world do. There's always going to be some people in the world who persecute others, no matter what we do, but all we can do is keep an open mind and keep negative opinions to ourselves. You know, 'If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.' Get it?

Wow, a three day weekend and we have a 5 paragraph essay and a blog. Come on Mrs. S you should know better than that.
"Witch Hunts" are everywhere in modern day America. You see it alot against different ethnic groups and religion. people are alwas prejudice against people that look and act different than themselves. There is nothing we can do people will alwas go after anyone that is different then themselves, especialy in America.

Anonymous said...

Dang it.. forgot about the blog..

Well I feel dumb because I don't understand what is being asked, but I'll just write something similar to what everyone else said.

I guess that everyone one is referring to these witch hunts to people and how they are prejudice. So I'm going to have to agree with them since I really have no idea what I'm talking about. These witch hunts kind of started with people who assumed someone was a witch. Many people were accused of being witches just because they weren't liked by someone. Normally, the people who accused someone of being a witch was because they didn't like them or were only being prejudice towards them. Like everyone else has mentioned.. these witch hunts can commonly be compaired to the KKK. They judge people and that's how they determined their victims.

Look around. These "witch-hunts" are everywhere, though not in the form we learned about. We don't believe people are actually practicing witchcraft, but we do exploit people for their differences. This happens often with celebrities. Since they are in the spotlight, we find every little thing out about them, and attack anything that might be "weird" or "different". EX - Barack Obama. Muslim? No. Muslim background? Yeah, so what? Middle name same as last name of evil dictator? Yeah, okay. But yet how many times has this been brought up in debates and on news channels? A lot! They happen because people, esp. American, are curious. We want to know EVERYTHING. And the media wants what we want. So they give it to us. Simple as that. Will it change? Not anytime soon.

This might be completely wrong but KKK? Haha I'm not sure but they falsely accuse people of being evil just because they're different. Is that what you're looking for? Hmm... Well let's see. Like the witch hunts, the KKK saw a minority as evil. The color of skin and the birth marks are supposedly the "devil's marks". Also, in both cases they see both parties guilty until proven innocent. How was a witch supposed to say they weren't a witch as well as someone whose African-American saying he's not evil to a bunch of white men BELIEVING he is. I don't know. This probably sounds stupid. I'll quit.

Sorry this is late...

I think that modern day witch hunts are taking place everywhere in today's society. though not as drastic as the past witch hunts, these are still harmful to people. Prejudice plays a huge roll in the fact that we judge others before we even get to know them. I think this is called lookism, which is very common for people in America to have. People decide how they feel about a person based on their first impressions. This is very similar to the witch hunts that took place in Salem. If someone was slightly different, or had a deformity, people automatically jumped to the conlusion that the person was a witch. If a Muslim walked into an airport, most people wouldn't accuse him of being a terrorist, but inside their mind, they are thinking through improbable (is that a word?) things that most likely wouldn't happen. Modern day witch hunts are taking place every time someone forms an opinion about someone without first getting to know them.

I had no idea that we had a journal last night. I figured that I might as well do it though.

Modern day "witch-hunts" are everywhere.

~People all have their own opinions. It makes people argue, fight, and then when push comes to shove the accuse someone else. Females always seem to do that. They argue and then tell their friend's secrets. When confronted about the telling of secrets it is not unusual for the female to blame someone else.

~America targets illegal immigrants "witches" of the society. Illegal immigrants make Americans because they don't have to pay taxes. Illegal immigrants make legal immigrants mad because they never had to go through all of the trouble of becoming a legal citizen.

~When a person stands out too much people generaly judge them. Gays are targeted by many people. They are accused of being evil and damned to hell in some religions. Gay has been labeled as a common replacement for the word stupid. People shun the ones who they think to be so different from them.

Those are modern day witch hunts and the problem is I don't believe we will ever be able to change people's opinions. It just will not happen.

love,
Sonja

ok um i dont no why my blog isn't on here...i did it like the day after it was due. i was like sorry it was late and stuff..but now i can't find it!! and i can almost swear that i did one!! i think someone must have deleted it!!not cool.

ne way sorry this is really late... but im pretty sure that i've already done one...

i think that the witch hunts in todays society have to do with the certain religios groups and racis groups. such as the kkk, and others. people very often judge others by how they look, how they talk, or what there beliefs are. Things like this happen in todays socitey because i think ppl can be selfish and sometimes stuck up because they think that they are better than ever one else. even in the situation with the gay ppl and homo ppl. i no some, and they seem to be very nice, but i think ppl judge them right away of because of wht they believe.
i don't no if there is ne thing that i can do by myself to prevent it, but if we work together we could make it work. i think we jus need to take it one step at a time and learn to overcome our differences. we need to start thinking of others and not our selves so much. once everyone learns to how to care for others and not there selves then we might be able to fix these witch hunts.

Anonymous said...

I think that the only relevant examples of something being similar to the witchhunts are the hysteria of the Cold War and the extreme racism towards African Americans, and more recently towards Hispanics and Middle Eastern people. I think these things still happen because some people are incredibly ignorant of what is going on and they fear and shun and hate that which is different from them. As for prevention, there really isn't much we can do other than educate people on what is right and wrong and teach them how to love, not be hatin.

ok... witch-hunts in the U.S.A.... Well of course there is the exsisting kkk which is the worst i can think of... peoplle accusing innocent people for no reason. I think people still do this because their racist dirtbags... and their insecure of themselves and want a reason to push people down. I don't think there is much we can do about this situation, I mean most of these people have this image in there head that their so strong about and actually believe their doing the right thing. These people seriously thing the God hates one of the races that he created and that God wants them gone... which is so sick and frickin twisted!!!
