I actually don’t really care that much of what naturalists think about life… I find it humorous about what they think about life (life is a joke). However I do like how some naturalists write because of what they think, it makes the writings very interesting. These ideas do somewhat merge with my own… only because of this class… aka if this was not required to be looked into I would care less. Even though I know the naturalist ideas my personal views and values are still dominant over myself… I seriously doubt I will get steered to believe that life is a cruel joke… even though it sometimes feels that way… not really… actually yes really… maybe… idk…..idc…. I do let some of the ideas mesh such as the universe is unpredictable, spontaneous and undefined… Man cannot predict nature, it can’t be competed with but can be resisted such as lost in a forest, but no resistance can hold up to it, it will break against nature eventually. (freezing in I killed mia fire)… or if some miracle happens guess what… you die randomly of age anyway if you manage to adapt to live in some horrible condition. Or maybe a random Icicle will fall and impale your eye that skewers your brain... when flailing in pain you smash your face into a random cactus... and die...... It could just happen..... randomly like that...
and randomosity, I definately got lost in your paragraph... lalalala...oooooh, shiny...
So anyway. I definately am more comfortable with the naturalists' view than Poe's (as if you didn't know that already), but I don't agree with many of their ideas. I am a Christian, so saying that religion isn't a motivating force is against my strongest beliefs. The aspect of individuals' life determined by enviornment, heredity, and chance is fine by me. I'm not going to strongly support it nor am I going to strongly disagree with it. I think a person is affected by choices they make and others make, but those choices can affect your enviornment and whatnot, so they kind of intertwine. That's a fun word. The whole "conditions, not people, are at fault" thing. Um, I'm not really okay with that. I've been through some stuff that gives me lots of reason to be a violent and angry person, but I'm not. I made a concious choice not to be that way. Someone else who's been through tough times might become violent and angry. Since I made a choice to be non-violent and angry, so obviously, it's not conditions that are at fault.
I'm sometimes a pessimist, okay, a lot a pessimist, so I kind of enjoy their viewpoint, which is more realistic and less "Oh look! We're floating in the middle of the ocean, but everything is going to be fine because we'll be able to start a fire with random pieces of driftwood and matches, and cook a fish that we catch with our bare hands." Yeah. That makes me feel so much better about my situation. Do people really enjoy making me feel like I would actually have a chance floating in the middle of the ocean?
Oh, other random thing I just saw. Free will is not an illusion as far as I am concerned!!! I believe I have free will. I don't know how else to explain it. Life is cruel sometimes, but I believe that we have a purpose here on Earth, and therefore is not a joke. But it's our own fault that things are miserable, but that's a whole nother story...
I definately FOR SURE do not like the naturalist point of view. I like several of the ideas that are presented by their thoughts but I do NOT enjoy reading it what so ever! On several levels i disagree with their thoughts such as the denial of religion as a motivating force. On the other hand I feel that their pessimestic view is easy for me to realte with. The only real problem that I have with maturalist writting is their subject matter. I am not a big fan of reading a 20 page story about someone who is caught is a blizzard or at sea. I would much rather read something twisted like Poe; I guess I would just like to read something that is intersting and intrigues the reader throughout the whole story, and this is not how I feel when reading natural ist writtings. I guess that I am not completely against nor completely for the natural way of writting, but I must say that i would rather read just about anything else.
before i forget, i agree with jake's comments on writing. it was okay when i read it but afterwards when i think about it, it bothers me that i've wasted 2 hrs reading something that's just happening in one place. i really like katelyn's view of pessimism is better. lying is just wrong, especially when ur lying to urself. i enjoy naturalism the concept in a twisted way. the crazy me u guys see is all for life is a cruel joke, but the other serious me thinks that we should still live it to the fullest (both have fun and accomplish sth) I would really like to believe that we have control over our lives, and i do believe it, but sometimes i feel like maybe we are dolls someone is playing with. its imposssible to tell. i also think the universe is undifferent is fair enough, i mean i doubt the universe (physically) has a brain and can dislike or like anyone. nature is just nature, things happen, too bad. and also, i had a thought come to me that said humans are stuck up lazy creatures who think they're better than other living things and can take advantage of them. but in the end, it is this supposed "intelligence" we have that kills us. like animals live perfectly fine knowing nothing about technology and going w/ instincts. oh and today in class i thought about utilitarianism.. i once read sth that said being rational and being right are completely different. rational is what SEEMS like the right thing to do (building a fire to keep warm) but the right thing to do is the one that might not seem to have a good outcome but does in the end (man dying bc messed up the fire, is rational but not right). basically the reasoning of human beings can lead to our end. or rather, u guys's end. MWAHAHAHA
hmmmmm....either Adam has first hand experienced some of those painful things, or his imagination is very morbid....I do know that he has experienced some of those things though...although the whole icicle/catus thing might be pushing some things....
Ok back on subject again...besides being pessimists, which I seem to be more than I should...I agree with some views that the naturalists hold, but at the same time I disagree with some, so yes, some of my values and views are intertwined with those of naturalists.
Life being a cruel joke is very true sometimes, but then you have to balance that one time with all of the good times that you've experienced in your life. Just get go for the ride type of thing. I'm sure that we (the people of the world) have some point to being here on earth to live. As for the universe being unpredictable, I would whold-heartedly agree with that. An example is everyday when you get up to go to school....you might have checked the weather the night before, but then it ends up being better/worse/righ on to what was predicted. Some people would actually go and get the weather man though......I would hate that job. Sure we are able to guess what might happen, but we aren't perfect right?
Fate and chance I find to be weird, but I don't know what to really think about them. Naturalists believe in these things and say that people bow down to them eventually.
Survival of the fittest is also an interesting fact that naturalists use in their definition. I do believe that science can answer some of life's questions, except the thing from "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" when it said "The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything" is 42http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aboZctrHfK8 ......otherwise, science can help our understanding and discovery of those questions.
Maybe sometime we will learn why we are here, what life means, about the universe, and everything.
For me I don't really agree about what naturalists think about life. That is just my opinion though. I am not personally against anyone who believes this way, everyone is an individual. Some of the things that I believe and think people probably do not agree with and that's okay. One point that I disagree with the naturalists is the survival of the fittest. This is meaning that ones who have the most are better off in the end. To me that is not really true. Deep down it depends on what a person really wants out of life and the work that is done to get there. Another point would be that life is considered a cruel joke. Honestly life can be cruel but that does not mean everything on this planet is cruel. If life was a cruel joke than what is the point of it all? See to me that does not really make any sense. The values and views of the naturalists do not really mesh well with my own. This is okay though because everyone believes in differnet things.
Everyone has their own special opinion. God made us all to be different and special in our own way and to express our own opinions. I don't have anything against naturalists its just that my beliefs don't exactly match up with theirs. The universe can be indifferent but then it can't. I believe that if you do what is right and do good things things will eventually work out. It's not about life being cruel. It is about doing what you can do as a person to make life better. Things are not always going to be smooth sailing. Sometimes you have to travel trecherous waters in order to succeed or get what you want. I don't think life is a cruel joke it just is not always easy. And another thing that I don't exactly agree with is that life for one is determined by environment, heredity, and chance. I believe that you have a choice to get out of a situation and make your life better. It is a choice for example to be in an environment that hurts you. And heredity does not determine who you are. You make who you really want to be. It is a choice who and what you want to be. Another thing is chance. Life is about taking chances but they do not bring you everything. A chance is a risk and there are choices that go beyond chances. Life is about what you make of it. I see what naturalists see and I do not think what they believe is dumb or stupid. My beliefs just don't exactly fit with theirs.
I really do not like the naturalistic way of thinking!!! it is so pessimistic and i hate that! life is supposed to by joyous and happy not depressing! i think that life is a precious thing and it is not just about dying. Bad things happen to everyone, but then things get better. oh i just hate that naturalistic thinking views life as a joke. Many people do not get to live out their entire lives because death takes them prematurly. People that have the privilege should appreciate life and not look at it in a pestimistic way.
I actually do believe a little bit of the naturalists' views. I mean, of course it seems like man will always be able to control his own fate, but there are limits to that control. One of those limits is definitely the availability of technology and also its affordability. In BF, the guy had no technology to help him, and by technology I mean man-made items to help him, such as warm clothing, a transport vehicle (dog sled),radio, map, food/medicine supplies, those very warm little heating packs that band people get in cold weather, etc. If a person does not have any human convienences, then it seems to me like nature is certainly in control. Sure we can struggle against it or work with it all we want, but in the end, nature wins. We may not all die in a freakishly cold, desolate, wasteland of frozen tundra(thank goodness!) or nearly drown after fighting a deadly storm at sea(again thank goodness), but we will ultimately die, as nature demands we do. Of course, religion takes over from there, because I'm definitely planning on making it to Heaven and having that eternal life with God, so that's where naturalism fails for me. Yes life can sometimes seem cruel, and make it seem like we have no control, but the beauty of life is that we can all make our own choices as to how we live our lives before the inevitable end.
It kind of makes me sad when i think about Naturalists views. They are very pessimistic and depressing. But i have to say, i do agree with a couple of their views. I really do think that sometimes instinct is superior to reason. I also think that sometimes conditions are a t fault and not the people. For example, a baby dies at childbirth, who is at fault? the parents or the baby? Or could it be that the baby died because reasons no one could control. I don't agree with some of the things though. I think that religion is a motivating force in life and that there is such a thing as fate. I also don't think that life is a cruel joke. Personally, I rather be alive than anything else.
The naturalist's views on life are obviously the result of very deep and intellectual thought. I have an enourmous amount of respect for naturalist beliefs and mine match theirs almost exactly. I believe that the human race is simply another form of life struggling to co-exist with nature. Its ironic how we can have such feelings of superiority and signifigance when we are still a very young race. I also don't personally see religion as a motivating force, but I can see how it can be percieved as one. The very thought of religion is ridiculous in my eyes, but thats a thought I will save for another time. I also believe that life is determined by environment, heredity and chance; that's just subtle and undeniable logic. I really only disagree with the naturalist's extensive pessimism and denial of free will. I think everyone has the potential to overcome so called "natural laws," with enough motivation. The idea that life is just a cruel joke is another interesting concept. It is true that death in inevitable, but that doesn't mean one should live in fear of it. Life is about finding your own purpose and acheiving it, regardless of your human deficiencies.
By the way, natural selection or "survival of the fittest," has been misinterpreted recently. By definition it is simply the means by which evoloution occurs in a population of a specific organism. More favorable traits become more common as a certain organism becomes better adapted to it's environment, which means the less adapted species will eventually die off. Just to clear up any misconceptions.
For the naturalist view of life I would agree on parts of it. Others I wouldn’t. For starters I believe in religion but I won’t go into that. I also don’t agree that life is nothing but a cruel joke. Although some people may have unpredictable, or undeserving deaths they may still have accomplished things and enjoyed life before they died. I guess I’ve been doing it for sixteen years and I think is oaky. If I were to die soon (preferably before research papers) I wouldn’t see my life as a cruel joke but, more of an experience I’m glad to have had. The last thing I disagree with is the bug quote because I’m not an arthropod with three segments and six legs.
On the other hand I would say I agree with more of the naturalists believes then not. I agree that the universe is unpredictable and indifferent. Nobody controls the weather or purposefully sends an avalanche down on a cabin in the mountains. Nature occurs whenever and doesn’t care who is there or what happens to them. If someone is in a bad situation then they’re just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I also believe that individuals are determined by their environment, heredity, and chance. If a kid grows up in a house where their father is always yelling at his wife then that kid won’t respect women either, or just the opposite, the kid might see that yelling got his father nowhere in life and may not want to be like him. Some aspects are by heredity like different disease that run in the family or facial features. Lastly by chance because you get what you get take it or leave it.
These values don’t really conflict with mine because I’m a pretty open person when it comes to what I believe. I even believe in things that contradict each other sometimes. For example I believe in creation and evolution. How does that work out? Don’t care enough to think about it, that’s just what I believe. Overall I think these naturalist people have some good ideas but in some ways I think they just want an excuse to be depressed.
I don't exactly like the naturalitst way of thinking. However, I am not completely against it. Even though that naturalist way of thinking is creepy and depressing, I am a very neutral person and can see different sides to different opinions. In this case.. I could see life as a cruel joke. I mean I have wanted to kill myself in the past, so I would say that I understand what they mean. JUST KIDDING! JOKE.. But I do agree that instinct is often superior to reason. Like Mrs. Svoboda said, when taking a test, we end up changing an answer and later finding out that we were right in the first place. In that case, it would have been best to go with our instincts. HOWEVER.. Sometimes on a test, I change my answer, but then put it back to my first instinct and then miss it anyway and wish I would have gone with my second choice. Like I said.. I always end up looking at both sides of everything which makes it hard for me to make desicions. That's why I suck at life. I hate this topic. I'm done with this, I'm tired. Bye.
First off, I HATE all of these stories. Okay, so the naturalists are extremely pessimistic about the outcome of life (which I completely understand), however, the stories don't seem to have much of a point. I understand that they have a ton of symbolism in their stories but I just don't see what is so interesting about them. I can see how they're excellent teaching tools for different literary elements and how they're used but I just don't see how they're relevant. Just because something happens naturally doesn't mean you have to write a story depicting it.
i dont like how the naturalists view life. I am a christian and so their view contradicts mine religion. I dont like how they believe everything is just chance and that your life is like a blind person going down the road without anything to guide him. They beleive that if you are born one way or something happens then tough luck i guess nature hates you. as a christian i believe that everything happens for a reason and that you do have a guide in your life. sure you cant change what happens but at least i have someone to look to and talk to too for guidance.
I don't really like the naturalist view of life. I am a naturally optimistic person, so the pesimissm doesn't really fit. I also believe that people are in charge of their own destiny. Obviously, death is something that cannot be controled, but it can be accepted. I also disagree with the negative attitude towards nature. I love nature (cough-hippie-cough) and I trust her. I don't think that nature is totally indifferent to humankind, because we have not let her be indifferent to us. We have polluted her and so she has had to strike back in order to preserve herself. I believe that nature does have a big effect on us, but we also have the ability to control our own fates until death takes us.
I think there is some truth to naturalist's view, but over all it is wrong. Humans alwas have a choose, nature can't controll everything. It messes with some of my veiws but over all I am fine with it. I am more of a optimist, I like to see nature as something amazing not this force that can kill you in a blink of a eye. Nature is dangerous but that is what makes it so wonderful.
i absolutely hate the way the naturalists write. it is so boring and there is no point to the stories. i find their views about life kind of hilarious though. they believe they have no control over their own future, and they were just put here to die. how could anyone enjoy living if that is what they believe? yes, the stories they write do have a good message, but the same message could be told in a much more exciting manner. it doesn't have to be so long and boring, but in a way, i guess that the writing depicts the way they feel about their life. it has no point.
i don't really agree with the naturalists beliefs...well thats just me..but i think that life shouldn't be based off of chance and fate. i think that the choices you make should decide the out come of your life. i also believe that God has a plan for you and everyone has a purpose in life. LIfe shouldn't just be like o well im gunna die ne way...it should be more happy and fun and not depressing. so overall i don't agree with the naturalists views.
A naturalists' view on life is a very pessimestic one, for sure. I feel that everyone has at least a little bit of pessimism in them weither they like it or not. I also feel that their views on life are very realistic and straight to the point and that is kind of how I look at things, too. Even though I don't like all of their beilefs, I sort of like them haha. They made me look at some things differently even though it wasn't always for the better. For example, how they say life is a joke, sometimes I feel that way, and we all are born to die, I don't know what else we are here for...(that sounds really bad, I'm not troubled or anything I swear haha) I remember we sang a song in Ireland, it was called, "All My Trails", and in it, it's like, "Hush little baby don't you cry, born to die.." Idk I just thought of it when we 1st started talking about naturalism.
I really don't see eye to eye with naturalists, seeing as they are extremely pessimistic and believe that nature controls their lives. They also strongly believe in chance, which I am not so sure about. I think that the way they purposely think that life is this terrible cruel joke is kinda stupid. I don't think I would ever be friends with a naturalist. And I really don't understand why so many naturalists wrote books about their views...
I believe in some of the views but not all of them. when it comes to natural selection and stuff like that i really do believe in that but i dont think that nature controls everything it is indifferent to humans, but it doesnt control our whole existence. when it comes to the views on life...life is what you make it and sometimes it can be a cruel joke, but usually its of your own making. a lot of it has to to with the person and their choices
Alright... I do like how the stories don't just have "fairytale" endings. Everything doesn't always happen like it should (or how we think it should). Because in real life, nature really isn't biased. However, as whoever said earlier, I don't like how they put aside religion. I believe that whatever happens, happens, but also that most things happen for a reason. You don't see this in naturalistic (sp?) stories. Oh yeah, I also don't like reading these when I'm already in a bad mood. Naturalism makes me emo. :P
ok....did the format on here change???? I hate it. :D ok... naturalist point of view...i definitly thik its very depressing. I definetly hate the pessimism... It just doesnt seem like they have much to live for, i mean according to them life sucks and no matter what kind of decisions you make in life where your goin when you die is already decided...So definetly doesn't mesh with my values... I'm a Christian and I believe that you decide where you go when you die based on weather or not you believe in Christ and the Bible. I do kinda admire though how their kinda all "stick it to the world you suck."

Well.. I'm half asleep right now.
