How would you define the American Dream? Does it exist? Can it be achieved?

No read this... Except teecher I wrote this as I thought.. So it might sound dum.
I would describe the American dream as what people themselves would like to see in the future of either their own dreams or for everyone, Linking back to A more perfect union, I would know that The American Dream does Exist because without a dream in the planning, people would not be where they are now. Depending on what the dream it may or may not be achieved, however it was at least attempted and the progress would be far more than nothing at all. Unlike A more perfect union, everyone can forsee what they want Since a dream for an individual can always be there and will not be interfeared, the mental defense will be stronger as the dream will get stronger. A reasonable dream will help people progress to what they want, even if it's not met, they would be further than nothing.
gee there's so many i've come across...like obama says its like equal opportunity or educating the youth or sth like that, MLK says its racial equality..me i have no idea..I'm pretty sure it exists, but only as a dream. It's probably sth impossible to achieve fully. like equality. we're only equal if we're all the same, and then we still wouldn't be equal. hmmm, going back to the whole ind. from GB, i'd say its equality, which is impossible to achieve, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Life is pretty simple to achieve i guess, until you die, and liberty no, never, if we were all free to do anything then the world would be in chaos (or under my control) and then happiness won't ever exist continually, there's always gotta be a moment where the joy stops, otherwise theres really no happiness bc its all the same..
!!!ok, i just thought of the more perfect union unit, maybe that's the Am dream..to always improve the nation..which exist, bc we're always improving tech and such, but we'll nv get there bc there'll always be sth to improve on...or maybe the dream is to have an Am where improvement is possible, as in the gov is not controlling ppl to only live a certain way. That's already achieved (i think), i mean u can change anything about the country u just have to work hard enough and have enough ppl to back you up.
ugh... i totally thought i had the more perfect union thing...then i just read adam's post...why do you always have to be an overachiever....1:30?? during english class?? haha
Either Adam has nothing to do in English class sometimes, or he just doesn't want to read his books like the rest of us....
Anyway!!! I like the OOOO!!!! SHINY!!! Ok. Assuming that my computer doesn't decide to explode like my glue gun, I will actually finish!!!
So, the American Dream...I would agree with Adam in the fact that unit 2 does fit with this one as well. (Why does everything have to link back together!!?? It is starting to bug me!!!) I'm going to guess that the last unit will tie everything together... back on subject now, I think that the American Dream is something along the lines of improving our country by making innovations according to first impressions or know info.
I believe that this dream exists because we see change in our country all the time. Now wheather it's to make things better or not, I would say there's a balance. This seems like just a dream to some, but it is a reality. (yet I question that sometimes...) As for the last question, I believe that I have already answered that. It has been achieved even though not by the cleanest of ways.
If we (the U.S.) want to continue the American Dream, then we have to learn to pull together (stop fighting!!!! KKK, Neo Nazi, Obama/McCain, etc.) and work together so we can continue making innovations to our country and maybe get to helping others.
This also includes Yin not taking over the world!!!! :P
Yeah I agree; Adam, you are a crazy kid. But I think it's funny. If I had an iTouch, I would definitely screw around on it in class. Mrs. S, you did not just read that. ANYWAY... Obviously, there are many different perspectives on the "American Dream". I don't really have a strict definition of it, but I'll give my opinions. To me, the American Dream is to get a good education, work in a career that is enjoyable to you, have a happy family, and so on. Basically, the American Dream is doing what you want to be doing.
***I will be back after my rehearsal to finish this blog. Sorry!
What is the american dream? haha that is a good question. people come from all over the world seeking the "american dream" however, as of late the american lifestyle is not envyed by most. many americans are going through a financial crisis at the moment. The american dream is to have opportunities for oneself and their children. it is to have enough money to live comfortably with the chance to splurg when one wants to. it is the abiliy to have luxuries and move up the social ladder with hard work. everyone is searching for the american dream, but few people actually achieve that kind of lifestyle. its not impossible to live that dream life, but it is hard to achieve and keep.
if anyone knows of a full-proof way of achieving the american dream, please share this information with nikki! you know where to find me!
The American dream is different for everyone. For some it is fast cars and money, but for others its freedom. You may think freedom is a weird word to us. It's not, think about it. I'm not talking about slavery but the freedom to achieve a better life for yourself and your family by how hard you apply yourself to your work. The American dream for foreigner’s maybe the right to speak out against what they think is wrong without getting shoot or killed for it. The American dream can be achieved very easily depending on what it is. You just have to work hard and never stop striding for what you want. To me the American dream would be to make some money build a house in the mountains or out on a farm away from the world and just be able to live my life in peace.
The American dream....each day one lives for this...it is different for everyone. Each person in this world probably dreams of something that they wish they could have or acheive. The american dream is an individual goal for each one of us lil buddies out there. For me it is a goal that seems so far away but not far away enough not to be acheived. If one dreams big and lives big I believe anyone can acheive their own american dream. Each day I try to find the good things and look over the bad because if you let the bad get you down you will never suceed in your dreams. So live life in a big way and take chances. To me thats one way your american dream can be accomplished!:)
The american dream is like the twix commercial...need a twix memento? Just kinding lol :) Well really the american dream to me can be achieved. Deep down I think everyone has an american dream/ goal. This topic could be about ones own individual goals/ accomplishments. Examples such as what a person wants to be the rest of their lives or possibly everyday decisions on makes. This so called "American Dream" can be achieved with determination, passion for what you want, and just doing the right thing. I have an american dream and I'm going to do my best to achieve it and that's my future. Just believing in oneself and others is the most important thing in making one's own dreams come true.
Okay... the American Dream... I think it means different things to different people. I don't think you can put the American Dream in a box. I think it can be many different things at once. For me, the American Dream is being able to go to college with scholarship money, because I worked hard and earned that privilage, and am not denied that because I am a female. For others it's the chance at equality, the chance to succeed in life no matter your background, the freedom of speech, freedom in general.
The American Dream is something that exists in people's mind, but I'm not sure if it can truly be real. Hopefully, I will achieve my dream, but once that happens, is it still a dream? Was it ever a dream at all? Was it a lofty goal that I achieved? I don't think you can achieve your dreams. You can achieve your goals, but not your dreams. Dreams exist in your subconcious mind, and they're not something you mean to think of. A dream can change to a goal, but until then, a dream cannot become a reality.
I just read everyone else's entries. Whoever the great pumpkin is (brian, maybe?) pretty much said the same thing as I just typed. Way to go.
By the way... Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat is AMAZING!! Come watch it! It's well worth your time.
I would define the American Dream to be a nice happy life and make a living by doing something enjoyable. The only problem with that definition is that it is too broad. It’s broad because every time I hear people talk about living the American Dream they usually don’t explain it or have a totally different explanation then the next person. Because of this I believe there is no true definition. Everyone has their own dreams and goals they try to achieve.
I do not believe there is an American Dream. I don’t believe in it because once again I don’t think there is a specific definition people can reach for like becoming an Eagle Scout, of being an A+ student. There is a Susan’s dream and a Paul’s dream but there is no American dream.
I guess since I said no to the second question I really don’t need to answer the third but I will anyway. The American Dream can’t be achived because of one simple reason: it doesn’t exist. I will believe this until someone can pinpoint an exact definition. If someone can.
ok well the american dream to some people is to live in this really big house with a white picket fence a super model wife and 2.3 kids.....but i think that the american dream is everyones own happiest time in their life( maybe someone is living in the perfect american dream) but most people go to work every day and they clean their own houses and take care of their kids....i dont believe in what the standerd american dream is supposed to be but i do think that everyone has their own dream. something where everyone is happy and the world is like a walgreens commercial does not exist usually people are unhappy with something...so i guess the walgreens world isnt in reach but anyone can chase their dreams with a lot of work i guess that what i think the real american dream is...working to a goal and getting it
this is kinda a tricky question...i think that the american dream is watever you want to make it... at first everyone knew the american dream to be where you get a good education, get a job you like and pays good, buy a mansion on the hill and to raise a healthy wonderful family...but for many, this dream is no where insight. cuz of the recent downfalls in the economy and other things this goal seems unreachable to most... so i think ppl began to change it over time..into a dream that wasnt so far out of reach and they started making it to be there own seperate goals. people base these goals off of what would make them happy and satisfied in life. it is that one thing that someone wants most in their lives... and once they reach that one goal then nothing else matters.
~The American Dream is so many different things all rolled into one convenient little package. As other people said before me, it's the American "Dream", not reality, so there is no set definition of an American Nonreality. It could consist of a near perfect life with a very large house and a super model wife,(hehe the RAVEN rap is in my head so I spontaneously rhymed...shut up I have a headache)attaining large amounts of money, living in a free country and being able to choose your own way of life, or simply living a satisfactory and peaceful life. ~Despite the fact that this is merely a dream, I do think one can always achieve his/her dream because perseverance, faith, and the occasional sweat, blood, and tears have always seemed to be the best way of getting what you desire. A dream is a wish your heart makes.(Yes that's from Cinderella. Headaches do strange things to me.) A wish is some far off goal you secretly hope to achieve. A far off goal can suddenly become a definite possibility. Then that possibility can become a reality, so who says you can't achieve your dreams? -CO
***CONTINUED Also, for some people (esp. immigrants) the American Dream may also include freedom. Yes, the American Dream does exist. However, I don't think that one American Dream applies to everybody. So, it exists in many different forms. Also, it can be achieved, as long as a person doesn't set their goals for their own "A.D." too extremely unreasonable (i.e. Get superpowers like Batman. Though I've already got those....) The reason there is an American Dream is mainly due to the freedom you are granted here. You truly can do almost whatever you want to, as far as career is concerned.
P.S. I'm gonna miss English tomorrow. Sorry guys! (Not like you care...)
I would have to say that the 'American Dream' depends on the person. People dream for different things. Like Jake said, the American Dream is basically just thinking of stupid stuff you think you need. I think that it exists, but can't be acheived. When someone wants something, they work hard to get (in some cases). However, once we achieve something, we only want more. Then we end up not being satisfied. So.............. I don't think it can be achieved. (Unless you have low standards.)
The American dream is just that...a dream. Thats what makes it so captivating. Its essentially the opportunity to create the life that pleases you; in an environment that doesn't restrict your creative means of doing so. There is so specific "American Dream," contrary to generic belief. But the dream does exist in the mind of the dreamer. (ie. I think therefore I am) So it technically is a reality, but not necessarily "achievable." The American Dream is the motivation that keeps people persuing happiness and striving toward that ultimate goal. I think that goal is reached when a person realizes that they honestly wouldn't want to be anyone else. When you achieve true happiness and complete satisfaction from life, you personify the "American Dream."
sleep deprivation and night-time cold medicine aren't a good combo if you have to stay up late and do a journal.
The American dream is a concept stating that when people come to America they will have the ability to live in better conditions and at better standards than they could living elsewhere. For most people it also means that they can be what they want to be and live how they want to live. For the most part this does exist. In all reality this dream is achieveable but only if people are willing to work for it. At this time we sometimes see people who come to America and just expect this dream to be handed to them on a silver platter, but it must be earned.
The American Dream is one that includes the ability to attain wealth, comfort and a lifestyle suitable to your personal needs. Unfortunately, this dream has gotten twisted and has shrunk significantly. People only see the wealth part and they forget the rest. The American Dream does exist both in the minds of people and in reality. People are able to pick up one of many numerous tabloid magazines and read about the lifestyles of the rich and the famous. While this proved to be entertaining for some, others are unable see the blessings in their own life. This dream of wealth can be achieved, but at what cost? Americans have taken this ability to design their own lifestyle too far and have forgotten the basic blessings that allow them these rights. Living in America is very rewarding. As Americans, it is our job to understand how to attain this dream without losing ourselves to it.
The american dream really depends on the person and who they are. I have would have to say that other countries would say that would say that the american dream is to become rich and live in the lap of luxury. Having the perfect family with the perfect job and just livin the good life. To me the american dream is to graduate from college and become either an architect or an engineer and living a normal life. The overall american dream can be achieved, but it all starts when your young. You have to work hard to achieve what you want and if you dont then the american dream wont come to you unless you are born into it. But even then you wont enjoy it as much as if you worked for it.
The American dream does not exist to me. I would define the american dream as having lots of money and living in a big house with your golden retriever and two perfect children. But... come on how many people really get to do that? So I live in a big house with a white picket fence. Big freaking deal! No one has perfect children and the ones who appear perfect will probably end up being junkies later in life anyhow. I think that the families who appear to have the "American Dream" are the ones with the most problems. Mommy is sleeping with her tennis instructor. Daddy has a few girls on the side. Perfect teenage daughter is going to kill herself later from all the pressure and the little boy is going to turn out just like Stalin. Whoop-de-doo. have fun with that life kids. The american dream isn't real! Sorry if I sound so Edgar Alan Poe-ish but I think that all of what I said is true. Accept it or not but it is the truth.
THE AMERICAN DREAM DOES NOT EXIST, REPEAT DOES NOT EXIST. so stop trying to achieve that dream.
Live life as it comes. Look at the sunset. Take all the opportunities you get. Just live the way that makes you happy. And don't ever try to be somethings you are not because no one is perfect.
I think what most people consider the American dream is to have a family, an average to above average salary, kids, and a house with a lawn. However, I think that this mold is slowly being broken. Today, so many people are focused on what they make that families have kind of taken a hit. Now, I'm saying that that's necessarily a bad thing.. but now the American dream is how much you achieve. I personally don't think there is ONE American dream because so many people are content at different levels of success. So, I guess if you set your own goals they could be considered YOUR AMERICAN DREAM.
I think that the definition of the American dream depends on who you are. if you were brought up in a poorer community or family, you would most likely define the dream as having a nice house, enough salary to cover necessities, and an average family. if you live in a different country, and want to come to America to experience the 'American dream", all you really want is to have a roof over you head, a job, and clothes on your back. i think that the American dream is a fantasy made up in our minds. we are always striving for things out of our reach, and if we happen to reach them, we are greedy for more. no one can define what the 'perfect life' is except you. you have to set your own goals. they may not all be reached, but some will be. when you reach them, in other people's eyes, you are the one who could be living their 'American Dream".
The American Dream is what mostly everyone wants. The American dream is what I think of as a perfect family, the perfect house, the perfect body, and the perfect job. I don't think it exists because nothing is perfect. Some people may come close to perfect but it's never gonna happen. Some people can settle for less but everyone is always going to be reaching for that goal.
I would define the American dream as not a specific example of the model family and home and job, but as hope for a better future in general. That IS the American Dream. It does exist, but it cannot be achieved, because humans simply want more and more and will never be truly content with everything that they have.
