What surprised you the most in this chapter? Have your opinions about anyone/anything changed? Are the 1920s any different than high school? =]

For my real post... I was really surprised at Gatsby's character. From what people had said about him earlier, I was expecting a sinister, slightly crazed man. Gatsby seems nice to me, although I don't really know what's going on with him and Jordan Baker... But anyway. He seems very nice and genuine to people, although I'm guessing that he doesn't like attention much. Why does he get all the phone calls from big cities?

I really liked the part about the men carting off their wives at the end of the night... that did remind me of high school. Guys are like, "Hey, let's go," and girls are like, "But we always leave early!!" etc, etc.

Jordan Baker does seem a bit more important. She and Gatsby has something going on, but I don't know what it is. I kind of like her.

I agree with Nick's statement about himself being honest. He's never done anything to make me not think that, but his character still seems to be missing something. I don't know how else to describe it. He doesn't seem fully developed.

Comparing the 20's and high school... I think I mentioned that in some blog or in my sticky notes that they seem very similar. You have your "popular by default" and "new popular" in high school, just like old/new money. You also have different social standings in both settings, and people always trying to reach higher, very rarely suceeding. Now, for the whole "cheating on husband/wife" thing, I don't think you see a whole lot of that in high school. The random pairing up at the party and swooning all over eachother-yeah. Welcome to high school dances minus the sweet swooning.

This seems so short compared to yesterday... man, I don't know what I'll do.

wow, i thought more ppl would have posted. way to go katelyn!

surprise: Gatsby i like, i kinda was wanting to see how obnoxious and mean he is (nick hates him rt?)..and the whole random partying with ppl who dont know anyone and don't care bother me..its like the movies where rich ppl have parties and random ppl come and the poor servants have to clean up

change: i dislike baker even more now..her recklessness..and liking nick bc he's careful and relying on others to not get in a crash? ..Nick seems to talk a little more and we know a little more of him. i like that he actually cares of meeting the host
--Gatsby to me seems like an important/busy person who just throws parties bc he feels like it and to blend in w/ the rich high class..idk if he's secretly watching everyone and noting stuff..oh yea baker cheated on the golf tourny bothered me too

high school: i think if you tried to anything can relate to high school, but this is particularly crazy, very much like our add classs...looking forward to that sunady meeting! lets be crzy like the ppl at the party!..i liked katelyn's comment on the popularity thing..yea its alike...but i was wondering...who really decides who's popular? i mean do popular ppl know they are pop? bc i think some ppl are and then they end up talking about how popular ppl are this and that and i'm all confused..is it really the cheerleaders and the jocks? i thought it was but then i thought it wasn't and then i'm all hulihudu (lit circle term)..then gatsby is like the bystander at a party who just stands by himself, i kinda feel bad for him..but i like him

nick's honesty: i mean he is honest but i thought he'd be a little more modest than that..and he really hasn't met everyone yet..conradiciting the judgement hting..that or i'm looking too hard..

are the rest of the class just waiting for someone to comment on a summary or what?

i guess i wasnt all that surprised in this chapter. i kind of figured nick would just come across gatsby by chance because that is how it always is in movies or books. character doesnt know the host, just starts talking to random guy, and wala it is the host!! not that original.
i do feel a little different about nick because he kind of lets the reader into his daily life a little more. he actually does have a life outside of tagging along with tom and tom's mistress! for a little bit he kinda sounded like a creeper though. he was talking about how he fantisized about following a girl to her apartment or something to that effect. can you say stalker!? but other than that whole comment, his character is starting to come out.
as for jordan, i dont like her. she is a deceiving "abigail." there is no better term for her. she will do or say anything to make herself look better. i hate that!!!
the 1920s arent really any different from high school today. you still have the popular people and the wanna bes. you have the people that just want to have a good time and dont really worry about what is going to happen because of that "good time" basically people were stupid then and people are stupid now; that is never going to change.

No real big surprises bout this chapter... i was surprised that Gatsby wasnt thos old rich fogie. Um, ok i dont think is so much of a loser anymore hes pretty cool. Good guy that Nick is. Um its not really all that different... a bunch of people getting drunk all the time and not caring about anything else. I really want to add more but i don't want anyone to hate me.

i don't think that ne thing really suprised me in this chaper, all though i did think that Gatsby would have been a better host and made himself more known.
I think that Jordan is kinda rude still, and she thinks that she is all that. I think she seems careless and just expects ppl to get out of her way.
Nick, i think, still seems like a nice, honest guy, and he doesn't really gossip bout other ppl, but it seems like he is scared to get out of his bubble and meet new ppl, he just always has to have someone there with him to make him more comfortable. at the begining of the party he was like im gunna go get drunk at the bar bc i don't see ne one i no but then jordan showed up.. and then they went around talking to ppl and exploring.
i think that in many ways the 1920s is like high school..for example there is the wannabe ppl who try to fit in and then there is the popular ppl who are just born popular. Also there are the ppl who live for the now and don't really think about what tomorrow will bring. Lastly i agree with katelyn or whoever the "little box" is, that the random pairing up and becoming friends does happen at high school dances.ha so all in all i think that high school is similar with 1920s.

Well to me this chapter kind of told more about the character Nick. My opinion of him a changed a little bit. I probably just misjudged his character before because I didn't understand what was happening. Jordan Baker I still think is kind of a lier. Apparently she lied about the golf tournement and the car? This just has written lier all over it. I was glad that they got to the mysterious character of "Gatsby." Although what those girls were saying he kind of sounds like a gentlemen but at the same time a stalker/killer. Probably just because Jordan was giving off that he was a creeper. Honestly though I'm still curious about his real character. I was expecting him to be a little bit older; not around Nick's age. The 1920's in a way does remind me of high school. Old money and new money is kind of like changes in high school. New things come along and old things stay mostly the same or have the same importance.

I'd like to start off with the high school part..1st of all, they spread rumors about someone that they don't even know, even though they were invited into Gatsby's house for a cool party. 2nd, men think they own the place and call all the shots. BUT, that doesn't really happen anymore...well I guess it does sometimes, but not in my relationship! :) hehe
I used to kind of like Jordan, but now that I find out that she cheats at sports, I don't really like her anymore haha. That ticks me off so much when people cheat at sports..grrr! But I kind of agree with what Nick said, most people aren't very honest anymore and Nick probably is the only honest one left in this story.
I was surprised that Gatsby wasn't a stuck up old man. Idk why but I just figured he was going to be. He seems like a nice guy, and I'm interested to find out what he'll turn out to be like.

I think that the thing that really surprised me in this chapter was Gatsby. I was totally off base on that one. To me from Nicks first discription of him I pictured kind of a mean grouchy man. Well I was wrong. My opinions have changed a bit. As I have read on I think I have learned more about Nick. At first I didn't really know what to think about him, but now its kind of different. He has morals and personality that I never would have expected he would have. Sometimes though that is part of getting to know someone new. They are always different than what you expect or see. From todays social life compared to the 1920's I would say it hasn't really changed that much. Theres still that pressure not to feel left out or to be overshadowed. Social life in itself is just a big mess of confusion. Who's the prettiest or cutest you name it! It is there and will always be there lola.

what surprised me most would probably be that gatsby throws these HUGE parties and hes not the center of attention...sorta weird um my opinion really didnt change about any of the characters. high school is so much like this party its scary with all the clique-e-ness and stuff nick was kinda the outcast until jordan came and dragged him around (popular girl falls for loser boy) people spread random rumors about stupid stuff (i still think we should do that rumor experiment) people were all only sitty at certain tablish frankly it was kinda stupid and gossipy and stuff. but i really loved the library guy and the car going in a ditch guy :)

The thing that surprised me the most was the size and what they had at the party. All that food, two diners. The full band, dance floor. The huge table of alcohol and dance floor. My opinion has not changed but I really like Gatsby, he is well known for his party but no one knows anything about him. He seems like the average Joe. The 1920 are no different. I mean come on you have people staying up late, parties, girls in short dresses doing things that the generation before us never imagined and there is the people that think it is necessary to drink and do drugs. Maybe not all the food because they waist the money on alcohol and drugs.

Nothing really surprised me. I figured there would be a huge party at some point just not so soon. The party consisted of the usual dancing, music, multiple rooms to hang out in, and drunk people. No, I can’t think of anything that just jumped out at me. I have different opinions about two people Gatsby and Jordan. I think I will like Gatsby now that I know something about him. He seems like a nice social guy who likes to throw parties. He probably has pride in his country since he served in the war although the person he killed wasn’t during the war. He’s probably like the guy who fed people to his pigs. Something creepy like that or he will have some other out of the box feature that doesn’t have anything to do with the war. He has to have something. Jordan on the other hand I now think I will not like. I don’t like that she lies and cheats. If she cheated in something people didn’t care much about but she was in a professional tournament and should have the decency to play fair. I don’t see how she could have done that and still live with herself.

I really don’t understand the last question. How does high school in the 20s differ from today? Are the 20s similar today’s high school? I don’t see how you can compare the two really. People in the 20s (rich people) seem to be high on life and think its one big party just like most high schoolers before they go to college. Also there PDA as adults is just like ours today as kids. Its looked down upon and people are doing to rebel and try to be more free and not listen to others. I hope that was what you were looking for.

Honestly, the stalking incident surprised me the most. Here we have such a nice guy and it turns out he is a very lonely stalker guy who goes out and gets drunk(that's the 3rd time now) at a party where he doesn't know anyone.
I was NOT surprised when Nick started talking about Gatsby and it turned that was exactly who he was talking to.
On the subject of Gatsby...I like him for now because he is so nice to people. One of the twins in the yellow dresses ripped a dress at a previous party of his and he bought her a new one for $265! That's like 7 months rent for Nick! He also allows total strangers into his parties, supplies what I'm guessing has to be gallons of alcohol, provides 2 dinners, and then lets everyone stay until like 3:00 AM. However, Gatsby is also pretty reserved. Even though he has all these parties, no one knows a whole lot about him, other than that he's rich. He also stays out of the party for the most part and kinda hides in a corner...like Nick until he gets drunk. I could totally see myself as a Gatsby, the semi-socially awkward sense.

Jordan is not so high on my list of characters I like now because she is a liar. She cheats in sports, lies to ppl whenever she tends to get in trouble, or just whenever she feels like it, and she's very irresponsible! Who drives a car without being careful? She says it takes 2 ppl to make a wreck, but Nick replies what if the other person isnt careful either? She just kinda shrugs it off like oh well! NO not oh well! Get out of the car and let Nick drive!

Also 1920s=high school(sorta)
We have our "old/new populars", outrageous parties, where sadly, ppl do get very drunk and then drive home, or try to drive, and random hook-ups at parties...or orchestra trips on a bus for 6 hours. HOWEVER, I like to think that we are a little more knowledgeable(spelling? d or no d) and capable of actual meaning and conversation + real fun without needing to be completely wasted. Just look at our class! Also, women arent just dressed up, party-going "fools" anymore. (Go ahead and make your sexist jokes, but you know I'm right.)

Well, it's late, I'm tired, and I don't feel like writing anymore. So....bye.

P.S. I BEAT ADAM TOO!

The thing that surprised me the most about the chapter also confused me a little. It was the long private conversation between Jordan Baker and Gatsby. I can't help but wonder what they talked about for so long and why it was so amazing...hmmmm

I hate Jordan Baker simply for her logic behind her reckless driving. That pretty much sums up her character for me. I hate that kind of thinking...People like that should be dragged out of the Wal-Mart parking lot and shot.

My opinion of Nick hasnt changed too much. He continues to show the distant, uninterested personality appropriate for a narrator. Then again...we do find out about his crush on Jordan Baker; which seems odd to me considering his beliefs about honesty.

Gatsby has become even more mysterious and interesting. He seems very charismatic and almost
too modest to be living such a hectic lifestyle. Im sensing theres alot more to this guy than big houses and big parties.

I can see the similarities between the 20's and highschool. They are both crazy in that people only know their peers by the gossip that they've heard about them.
People are also set in very strict social classes and are too often judged by first impressions.

Btw...what was the point of the 3 pages about the drunk guy crashing his car?...Fitzgerald must have gotten drunk and crashed his car before he wrote this chapter. Who knows

Word Verification: "squicome"
Some guy gets paid to come up with these...

So...I think I understand more of what went on this time.
Jordan seems different than in the last chapter. On one of my chapter one sticky notes I wrote that she was a little stuck up, but I don't think that now. Jordan looks to be doing what she thinks she must to survive in the upper-middle class of the 1920s. I'm not sure if she and Nick would be good together, but why not.
As far as Gatsby, I like him a lot. He seems to do just what he wants. The rumors earlier in the chapter lead us to believe that he is a bad man, but when we actually meat him he is proven to be a nice guy. As far as I can tell he and Nick are going to get along well. I really like his character.
With the whole highschool thing, there are some definate likenesses. Everyone flirts with everyone else and kinda does what ever they want no matter their commitments. This many times happens in high school as well. The social standings in both are very similar as well. In each there are the people at the top who have been there a long time, the new populars/money, and the people trying to make it to the top but never will.

I was most suprised by the way that Gatsby is introduced. He is such a big character, yet Fitzgerald introduced him in a simple conversation. I have found that that is part of F. Scott Fitzgerald's style. He introduced Dick Diver in the same way. I don't think my opinion on any of the characters has changed, except that I still love Nick's character. He seems to be a hard-working person who has fallen into good company. He is still funny and charming and I absolutely love reading his view points. I would say that I am now intrigued by Jordan Baker. After hearing a bit of her story, I want to hear more. I also want to see what develops between Nick and her. I can relate to Nick's inability to fall in love easily, so I want to see how he deals with her feelings for him.
You asked if the 1920's are any different than high school...Well, if we're talking MIP's, then no...haha, just kidding!!
I think the 1920's were elegant and wonderful. I have to admit that I am completely taken by Fitzgerald's words. If I could live in the 1920's the way he did, I'm sure I would absolutely love it. It could be compared to high school because of the drama, but I don't even think that that is fair. The people of the 1920's had far more class (or pretended to) than the high schoolers of today.

One more thing: Ben, that comment about the Wal-Mart parking lot was fantastic!!

Not a whole lot in this chapter was really all that surprising to me. Gatsby's big party was pretty much what I expected of a '20s party, from what we've seen in class. However, there were two characters that somewhat surprised me, or didn't turn out to be what I thought they were.
1) Gatsby - We didn't know too much about him anyway, so it was kind of open to interpretation, but he was still not exactly the same as I pictured him. He ended up being a very caring, kind-hearted guy. He also doesn't let his fame get to him.
2) Jordan Baker - I really thought better of her until chapter 3. I thought she was a fairly nice girl with good intentions, but it turns out she's kind of a deceitful, lying, careless girl. She could be worse, though. And there is some weird relationship b/w her and Gatsby, don't really know what's going on there...
Anyway, I do see a slight resemblance to high school in the types of characters described at this party and their actions.

It surprises me that Gatsby doesn't drink. He throws these AMAZING parties and has obviously has enough alcohol to get people to run into a ditch. However, he chooses not to drink. He also keeps his distance from his own party just to watch the people going about their business. That also surprised me because usually, the person throwing a party, throws it to have fun. Jay Gatsby just sits on the marble steps doing nothing.... BORING! I think I'll wait a while before I make any more judgements on these people :)

Anonymous said...

Okay, so if Mr. Gatsby is just a nice, polite person who likes to throw parties, this book is going to be stupid. I have a feeling that there's more to him but I'm not exactly sure. He seems too happy. I really was expecting him to be this "big shot" business tycoon but he's not really too interesting. And he wasn't really the MAIN ATTENTION WHORE {cough}, so that was a little surprising considering he throws the best parties. And Nick.. he can't be that uninterested. Does he not really care about life or what? The only thing that showed any real emotion was when the book revealed he had a crush on Jordan. Other than that, he's very bland.

I do agree though, this book so far is a lot like high school. You have social standings based on looks and wealth, and you have people that just coast.

the whole Gatsby character really didn't surprise me in this chapter. when i first heard of him, i did not automatically assume he was a rich stuck up jerk. i did think he would be a little older though. the one thing that was surprising was how Gatsby didn't join his guests. he preferred to sit back and watch his guests have the fun. i also decided that i don't like Jordan's character anymore because she is dishonest, but we'll see. maybe her character will turn around. i am interested in seeing how Jordan and Nick's relationship will turn out.
i think that the 1920's and high school are similar to each other. to ignorant people, the more money you have the more popular you are.

Anonymous said...

This chapter wasnt really that surprising. i mean gatsby seems like the guy that throughs a party just because he can and then ends up sitting there saying to everyone but not really getting to know then. he seems like an ok guy but who knows. The part with the drunk guy and the crashed car was pretty funny. nothing really cahanged except the fact that jordan seem to worse than i thought. she doesnt care about anyone but herself and she thinks everyone should do what she wants them to. no the 1920 arent really different from high school. there are parties and dancing then you have your drunks and your snobs an all around good time. gilly

Anonymous said...

As I type this, you are watching...

I thought that the party was pretty typical. Maybe the only thing that surprised me was that there were people that Gatsby didn't even know! That would be weird to have a random person come up to you and say he/she knows you! My opinions towards Ms. what's her bucket have changed. She is a a cheating, reckless Abby!!! Her attitude bugs me...

Nick seems to be opening up some more. He allows us into more of his thoughts and feelings.

Mr. Gatsby has had a good first impression on me so far. He seems very nice and friendly to others, and has great parties!!! This party, I think, is our class at a party....scary....

The scandles and lies and blah blah blah do remind me of some things that happen at school.

yay I'm not a failure!!!!

What surprised me the most was Gastby was not that wide in attention even thtouh he was the host, there were obviously non-invited people in this massive gathering. Gasby apparetnly new Nick from war and Nick didnt even recognize... crap my nose just started bleeding and its 11:14
The party here could be like a little like HS... just hidden from authority... and about a fourth as bad. So not that really maybe at KHS but im sure some other High schools 2x worst than ths. A friend from CA said that at his school he sees PDA's everyday and its common and teachers pretend they don't see it...

Okay, seriously? I just read chapter 4, and signed on to journal, and there is no spot to write on because it's not due until Thursday! Hmph. Fine. I'll just go back to my REAL homework that I actually have to do for Wednesday!

haha...i discovered adam's nosebleed at school and the angry cherbear lol

I was really surprised that back then people had parties that literally lasted for days. I was also surprised that Gatsby himself seemed to like to hang back in the shadows, even though he is hosting this major party that no doubt involves thousands of dollars.
