Gatsby Journal 6 (Ch. 8)

So, after eight chapters, what are your feelings about this novel? Anything driving you crazy? Anything you absolutely love? (Don't forget--there's still one more chapter to go--so if you've finished, don't give anything away!). As always, anything else related to the novel you'd like to share. . .

Wow!!! Am I the first one again? That's twice now, yay!

1. Did Daisy and Tom seriously make up? Seriously? I said make up, not make out....uh-hem, just for clarification. But anyway, how could Daisy do that? She knew Tom was cheating on her, and then she sort of moved on to Gatsby, but when they all went home, Daisy apparently forgave Tom because Gatsby got his money from working EW! (extreme sarcasm).

2. DID WILSON SHOOT GATSBY AS WELL AS HIMSELF???????!!!!!!!! Is Gatsby dead? Aaaahhhh! Now what? If Gatsby and Myrtle are both dead, then maybe now things can go back to normal, and Tom and Daisy can go back to being stuck-up, snobby, miserable, rich people.

3. Are T.J. Eckleberg's eyes really that big of a deal, like the movie made them out to be?

4. I really do like this book, but it doesn't exactly follow proper love story guidelines... like the fact that the other lovers are now DEAD!

5. Sorry this is so choppy. My brain isn't functioning rightly. See? Headaches=death. Or at least a lot of pain and distress. I'm going now. Bye.

What exactly happened with Gatsby and his whole big secret? I still don't understand it!

Anyway, I think it awful and sad. I think he did love Daisy, but it's turned into obsession and made her fall out of love with him. Maybe that had already happened. I don't hate Daisy as much now. She was young, but getting older and wanted to start her life. You can only wait so long for someone before it becomes hopeless. She knew what she would marry for, and even if I don't agree with it, she knew what she wanted, it didn't hurt anyone else, and she stuck with it.

It's very sweet that Daisy and Tom made up. (and yes cherie-I got that reference. NO SVOBODA IT"S NOT ABOUT ME!) It's obvious that they care about eachother (or fake it really well) and are working toward the same thing (hey, we're old money we can't get divorced because that would be bad and we have a kid). Sad that they didn't get the right people in the first place, but that's their personal problems...

Wilson is an absolutely crazed man who is going insane because of his wife's death. I can hardly blame him for what he did, but at least he could have looked into it a bit more. Now, I'm not condoning his whole "GAH! Gatsby ran over my wife so I'm going to go shoot him!", but I can imagine his pain and frustration. He makes some very good points about the eyes... People notice them when the times were very bad, etc. The whole "people look to God when in times of trouble" thing. I liked that symbolistic part a lot.

question again-why would there be a phone call before 4 o'clock?

The scene where we find Gatsby dead and Wilson dead is really sad but very beautiful. I love Firzgerald's use of poetic language and how solemn the deaths are. What is the symbolism of the pool? Him letting go of the dream of Daisy finally? Holding onto it one last time until it's gone? IDK.

We are definately going to have to talk about Gatsby's past tomorrow. What exactly is going on with that?

Oh, gag me. I'm listening to some disney channel music right now. Maybe I should go back to my screamo or cello rock quartet. Cough, cough. :-)

After eight chapters, I think this novel is not as near as bad as I assumed it would be. For some reason, nothing bothered me that much... such as when we started this most people hated Tom with a passion. Tom just bothered me but I didn't yell and scream at the book like in the Crucible at Abby. I love the fact on how sad this is by some dude chasing after a girl his whole life, the way Gastby's past that was slowly revealed kept the story alive. I find it different that the narrator, Nick is pretty much Gastby's shadow in this story, so he witnesses most of the events that happens.
So we talk about Gastby for a long time, building knowledge on him and then... he eats bullet by dude that also impales himself with bullet... which is OMG AFTER ALL THIS AND HE GETS EXTERMINATED... WHY!? -.-
Well, he was really getting close to Daisy again and all, his whole life almost to what he wants and then.... he eats bullet, which is not that cool, he should of fled like he was told to... that reminded me of many movies... some dude tells another dude to flee, he refuses, and then usually they become deceased in some... way... usually eating some sort of projectile.

ok WAT THE HECK!!! i really dislike this book now!! i mean REALLY DONT LIKE IT!! that is so dumb that Gatsby just dies!! its jus bam!! and he is dead!! he doesn't even get a final word with daisy!! and they don't get to run away together and live happily ever after??!! thats so dumb!! the book might as well just stop now cuz gatsby and myrtle are dead!what else can go wrong?! seriously!i don't think gatsby deserved to die! and i can't believe Daisy and tom made up?? wat is up with that?! daisy new all along that tom was cheating and she still goes back to him? wat does she see in this guy?? Gosh!! i really don't like this book ne more!!! kinda like how i really don't like these research papers!!!!! ERRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Hmmmm so Tom and Daisy made up...that's ok....I think...I would have prefered her to go with Gatsby, but Gatsby was getting a little weird...He had a dream of recreating the time and memories he had with Daisy and beginning where they left off. I still swear that Tom had the whole changing cars thing in mind...even though the running over Myrtle (I still don't know how to feel about her...) wasn't part of the plan. Maybe Daisy wanted to run her over because she knew about the affair between Tom and Myrtle. IDK...either way, Gatsby got the tail end of the deal. Wilson wanted to find and kill the man that ran over Myrtle, but then he killed himself....WHY?!?!?!? I ABSOLUTLY CANNOT STAND IT WHEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS!!!! OH SOMEONE JUST KILLED MY WIFE. I THINK I'LL FIND THAT PERSON AND KILL HIM/HER AND THEN KILL MYSELF!!! Is it because of grief or what?

Still, I do like this book a LOT better than This Side of Paradise (EVIL!!)

I feel bad for Gatsby and Daisy, but I agree that Gatsby's obsession probably scared Daisy away...then there's Tom. I do think that he's a jerk, but he still has a tender side that is likable. Maybe Tom and Daisy will get along better now...

research paper+lack of sleep+other school related things that are just as bad but maybe not+outside of school activities=death!!!! I have to say...this year is pushing me more than last year.

this novel is good but really annoying...i cant help but be pissed at daisy and really really hate her and call her an giant $#@^% abby person. i think gatsby knew that he didnt really have much longer so he kinda accepted his fate.

ok and scotty kinda knocks you over the head with the symbolism stuff he was just like ok this is god and this is hope and stuff. i mean he doesnt have to make it so obvious.

poor gatsbys dad i felt really sorry for him i dont think he really understood any of it

these last 2 chapters were depressing and makes me not want to read it and angry and stuff plus there was no gore i mean come on at least add some of that in.....

im angry so im done.......stupid indifferent ending

and really why is the word verification thingy so weird?!? i keep getting really weird ones maybe its just because my mind is int the gutter but really comester?? lol

GATSBY DIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE HECK?????????????? Im so mad and angry and, and hurt! GRR!!
*silence*

anyways... its not fair! and i liked the frickin novel untill now... that was really really unnecesary(wow really bad on the spelling i kno) yeah i kinda expected Nick to die or something as like an innocent by stander but angry! And theeeeeeen stupid Daisy and (t)om had to make up and that ruins everything. Ooooooh... who gets all of Gatsby's stuf???? that just dawned on me... Daisy maybe?? I doubt Nick since he wasnt really expecting to die and all.... Oh man now this is driving me crazy. Lets see... and this part relates to Twilight when..................... uh.... ooh ooh! The 3 evil vampires eat the two innocent hard workers for no real reason (i win) I dunno. I kinda like this novel, ya know we've had our ups and our downs. Myrtle dying definetly made me l ike it more then Gatsby had to go and get himself shot and now were not doin so well... GRRR! huff. Im just sooo mad at Daisy too cuz tom was such a jerk to her!! he cheated on her from day one!!!! and if she woulda gone and called Gatsby and been like oh i love you, than Gatsby never would have go ne out to swim and th e would be living happily ever after(if they existed) with lots of little children running around and happy music playing in the backround but nooooooooo Daisy is a Gatsby. I guess if you think about it we keep saying all of this stuff about tom and how hes a hypocrite and we hate him but in all rality daisy is just like tom. Maybe not from the start but cheating is cheating. So maybe its ok that the two cheaters end up together. I hope Daisy feels really really guilty for wh at happened to Gatsby though. Its her fault. Kinda like in Twilight how the big fight scene was all Bella's fault...hehehe...uuuuh Ima go start my research paper now...

ch 8 was very confusing..of course i fell asleep while reading and tried to keep my tired eyes open the whole time..anyway, where did cherie get the idea that tom and daisy made up??? how did wilson die? i'm really indifferent about this novel, i feel like i'm just reading it and not thinking about the deeper stuff even tho we kinda have to. I don't hate anyone or like anyone to the extent the other ppl do, they're just characters?.. i think all the crazy stuff from other reading this year kinda made me immune to any crazy stuff here. and maybe faulkner's book did too..
I agree with cherbear as in the whole eyes thing. i know you said it was important but i feel like there's more to it that i'm missing..or maybe that's it and its not really that big of a deal. this is kind of a twisted awkward love story that doesn't follow the usual cheesy plot. and if there's a happy ending then i'll...not like it. i think hte actions could be more exciting, again maybe i'm getting numb. I love the randomness of unrelated statements by the characters, like nick's 30th bday and jordan saying no one's white here, and daisy blabbing about her daughter to nick (NOT the little fingers/abortion deal).

i'm still not seeing where tom and daisy made up and where gatsby died...the last line says "It was after we started with gatsby toward the house that the gardener saw Wilson's dead body a little way off in the grass, and the holocaust was complete." gatsby walked back with them right? or are they carrying his body? i am obviously missing some very important facts here```so nick was at the station planning on leaving to go back home? and then he just rushes to gatsby's house all of a sudden bc he knew sth was going to happen? that wasn't acceptable..unless that wasn't the way it happened..i have serious issues understanding this chapter...

so i guess i really do like this novel. like i say i dont but i get so emotionally involved that i must like it a little. it is very annoying that gatsby just died. like what the heck!? seriously that was really stupid. now that myrtle and gatsby are both gone where is the story going to go? is tom going to find a new fling? it wouldnt surprise me! Gatsby never got to talk to daisy about what she was really feeling or anything! i really wanted them to run away and get married and make lots of cute babies! that is how it was supposed to end! now life for tom and daisy is going go be really awkward. like they cant go back to normal after all that came out. what is it going to be like? oh yeah honey i love gatsby but since he's not here anymore i guess you'll do. honestly not cool!! and now jordan is all mad at nick for the way he treated her the night before. OMG! what does she expect? oh yeah we just sat through this huge fight about who daisy loves but i am totally in the mood to "come inside" if you know what i mean!! honestly!! how stupid can one be!? ARG!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, i've written my intro and i'm about two-thirds the way through my first point, and it's three and a half pages long! ...The worst part? I'll tell you. I'LL TELL YOU. I think it sounds TERRIBLE. It's like I threw up on my keyboard and word magically obsorbed my vomit and put it into words. AND I have a HEACHACHE!

In conclusion, I will be journaling 1B tomorrow.

ok if in my book for quotes im having one person say someting and the other person is giving a response so its like 2 quotes in a row by two different characters but still together... like lines! there we go.. how do i do that?

Mrs. Svoboda said...

Hope--easiest way to do that, is to double/single quote it "'......' '.......'" ( ). Unless it's really long, then do it as a long quote. Does that make sense?

Anonymous said...

I think, yeah thank you. I just wasn't sure if since they were going together it should be like in a book where you go to the next line 4 the 2nd one but that just sounded stupid so yes than you

so do we have to fill 8 entire pages or just make in to the 8th page? And has ne1 else noticed all of the funny thins the word verification spells? I always th ought it was random...

Mrs. Svoboda said...

8. Full. Pages. :) It'll be easy. Most of you have been saying this first point is 2 1/2-3 pages. Piece of cake.

Anonymous said...

Ha! are you kidding me im working very hard to make my intro a whole pg. 3 lines left. Actually my first point is stumping me. Trying to find the differences between Jo in the beganning in end is kinda hard cuz zhe doesnt change all that much except her views on love and shes a little more womenly. She gives up writing for the old guy right?

Anonymous said...

Uh I did a MAJOR change to my outline...I want to make sure it's ok...

I. Amory
A. Characterization
1. Physical Features
2. Personality (better than character??)
B. Parents
1. Mother
2. Father
(where could I fit in Mongsingor Darcy??)
II. Guys
A. Characterization
1. Physical Features
2. Personality
B. Connection (to Amory)
1. How they met
2. Help (like how they help Amory improve himself I think...)
III. Girls
A. repeat
1. repeat
2. repeat
B. repeat
1. repeat
2. repeat

I changed a ton but I think it will work better, but I wanted a second opinion...please and thank you!!!

Mrs. Svoboda said...

I should have started a second thread just for paper questions!

Hope--she doesn't exactly give up her writing. She does change quite a bit though. We can talk about it a bit tomorrow.

Dan--That's fine, at least just glancing at it. And Darcy is a father figure, so I think you could include both under that point.

Anonymous said...

oh alright... yeah so embarassing stiry... my chair just broke. I blame u

Anonymous said...

would it be bad to split info on one note card into multiple pieces? I have info for how many people helped Amory on one card and one is from Darcy, so I just want that...

Mrs. Svoboda said...

Dan, no problem.

Hope, lol. :)

Do I put (Fitzgerald 15-17) or (Fitzgerald 15 and 17)??? I have pg. 15 & 17 on one of my cards...

Some how I like this book even though I’m not into the whole romantic love stuff. I don’t think I like it because of the death scene either because I’m not really into that either. I think I like it because there are a lot of hidden elements so it’s more of a challenge to understand unlike most books. The love story and death scenes probably add to it though. Romeo and Juliet was worse because it was all about love and hardly anything else (stupid love). But Great Gatsby isn’t as good as Caesar which was my favorite. I liked that one because of all the trickery and cunningness of the plot.

Nothing really drives me crazy. Except the eyes but that’s just because there creepy. I knew someone else was going to die but I figured Wilson would kill himself instead of Gatsby. He was beginning to become one of my favorite characters until he shot Gatsby because he was the only person who seemed honest in his relationship and hard working. I didn’t mind Gatsby’s death either. For the past two chapters he has seemed to be just as much as a jerk as Tom because of the way he treats Daisy and he also seems to be more of a stocker now then ever. Fitzgerald could have killed Tom also or Daisy or Jordan… heck kill them all I don’t care. Personally Nick is the only character who is a good person in my mind.

I don’t think there’s anything I love in this book. I did enjoy finally learning how Gatsby met Daisy and what his military career was like. Other then that I just like how Fitzgerald makes this book short sweet and to the point. I don’t see how he wrote all this in less then two hundred pages.

Anonymous said...

Wow...you guys are crazy. It's not that big of a deal. Yeah, I'll be up late, but that's just 'cause I procrastinate. I am already on my third page and I'm not finished with my first point. do we put the pg number with our author frm the book when citing after a quote?

Mrs. Svoboda said...

Yes Hope. I had that on the board yesterday. Why am I still up????

Anonymous said...

So...I honestly didn't see that one coming, and I'm usually pretty good at predicting that kind of stuff. I think it was horribly depressing how they described Gatsby's dream dying just before he literally died. "A new world, material without being real"...etc.
Does that mean I'm affected by romance if that depresses the crap out of me?

I also think that Mr. Wilson should have a front row seat in hell next to Hitler. I understand the emotional strain, but how much of a complete waste of life/coward do you have to be to commit a murder suicide under false pretenses?

Theme = Life sucks, then you die.

I was kindof indifferent as far as symbolism...I mean I got it, but it didn't affect me that much. God is always watching...Jesus loves me this I know, blah, blah, blah

What else...Tom gets to live another day to cheat on Daisy, and you know he will. Nick and Jordan are getting closer and will probably marry soon...

I don't know, its gonna take me a while to absorb the meaning of all this. No doubt it did make me think, which means this has to be a great book...

Word Verification = ganifi

Skip down to the third part---> just rambling on about paper until then.

So first of all.. I should have known that when there were fifty posts, they were about the research paper. Second.. since everyone else is complaining about it, I'll go ahead and join. Pretty sure I didn't do much to what you suggested for my paragraphs, just because I couldn't focus and think of more to put into it. Also.. I'm sure it sucks haha (since everyone is bashing on these ;)

Third (and about the actual book)...

This book is so confusing and weird and out there!! I'm going to agree with Meghan T on alot of this. Probably with a lot of people, but like always, I normally just read the shortest one closest to the top to get an idea of what I'm writing about. Anyway, um, yeah, WHAT THE HECK! I feel the same way about this story being dumb without Gatsby in it. It seems pointless to have one more chapter after that. Why did he die? As for Myrtle, I didn't find her too interesting so it doesn't bug me as much knowing that she died. I don't have much to say about the book at this point except that it is kind o random and interesting..

I'm going to work on my paper some more..

Anonymous said...

Well...I figured someone would die in some tragic way near the end, and I wasn't far off, I was just surprised that it would be Gatsby. Out of all the people in this story that truly deserve to be punished for their past sins, Gatsby is by far the least deserving of his fate. It seems that Tom and Daisy are also getting back together, which I'm not entirely thrilled about... I mean come on Daisy, isn't it absolutely obvious that Tom is an unloyal moron? This upsets me quite a bit... and there was something I was wondering about something. In the book, I could've sworn it said that there were some people at Wilson's garage/apartment watching him to make sure he didn't do anything stupid. And yet, he manages to get away and figure out the name and adress of the person who owned the vehicle that smashed his deceased wife. To me, this all seems highly unbelieveable that he could do all this, and procure a weapon for the murder and eventual suicide. Especially when there were people there watching him before he escaped. Maybe I'm just reading it wrong, I don't know.

this might be too late, and i hate myself for not getting this paper done earlier..but lots of questions, so if you mention something ina sentence that's from two dif pages say 33 and 93, how do you site it? and what if its something that's implied in the book how cite that? i think i'm done writing (but still needs to type yet...it'll be a looonng night) and i've only used like not even 1/2 my notecards for the factor...i feel dumb

K...so the whole Gatsby dies thing...that was completely out of the blue. How could fitzy do that to us? But anyway...the thing that is really bugging me the most is that we havent found out what Gatsby's "business" is. I really wanna know!!! And then there's the whole Tom and Daisy make up thing (yes cherie...make up). Truthfully I am really not surprised about it...at all. The society would frown upon her leaving him and she would probably lose her little pampered lifestyle...and no offense but Daisy is a little too low to risk that even for "true love." And now that Gatsby's dead neither tom nor Daisy have anyone else to turn to...but what happens now. We still have one more chapter and the main character is DEAD. I'm confused!

Anonymous said...

Wow we are a really special English class!! :)

If all of us decide to die during third block I think we will all know why...

Anonymous said...

So this chapter kinda came at me like BAM! But based on the earlier events, this could've been expected. At first it's kind of hard to believe, though. I don't think it ruined the story that Gatsby died, though. There's only one chapter left, anyway. Yeah and what's with Eckleberg's eyes? I guess they're just really metaphorical.
I think it's kinda funny that Nick is the narrator, but nothing has really happened to him. He's just been there watching this all unfold before him. And where was Nick when Gatsby was shot? I thought he was going to swim with him? Mayber I was wrong.
Oh and Mrs. S, you guys did give something away in class yesterday. You talked about the dog collar, when that didn't come up until Chapter 8. Oh well, I forgive you.
Well, I gotta go jump in the shower. See you crazy kids in class.

so i think this novel is completely retarded because it pretty much ends where it starts. except no gatsby or myrtle. THe whole book drives me crazy because of all the stinkin symbolism. after this eng class i will never read a book the same way again.

Anonymous said...

WHAT!? Gatsby dies?! That's not cool.. Fitzgerald shouldn't have named the book "The Great Gatsby" if Gatsby gets shot! How stupid. And Gatsby isn't that mean of a character.. he's just confused (Well, now dead as well). And I didn't assume that Wilson would be that upset. I mean, I guess his wife is dismanteled in bloody bodily sections across a street... but that's hardly a reason to go kill Gatsby, even IF he thought something more was going on. Okay, and I don't like Daisy at all. I'm fricken mad that she and Tom just put it all behind them. "All in a day." WHAT?! They're snobs.

Oh yeah, and I had the same question as Cherie: Do the eyes explain even more than we're seeing? Because the movie sure likes to utilize them a lot.

Anonymous said...

okay. i predicted that gatsby would die, not like that! i wanted tom and gatsby to get in a huge argument about daisy, and have tom end up killing gatsby. then daisy should have killed herself because she could not have gone on living without gatsby. that would have been better than wilson just killing him.
i don't necessarily like this book, but it is better than most books we read in english. i don't think that gatsby should have died this early in the book, he is basically the main character. he should have died at the end, and fitzgerald should have left what happens after between daisy and tom up to the audience. i hate it when authors do that, but if a book makes you mad, then the author did a good job writing it.
the whole eye thing is kind of creeping me out. i really want to know what is going on with that, and it had better not be something stupid like the broken clock.

So, last night I went to see twilight...It wasn't bad...I actually liked how awkward Edward was at the very beginning...
Speaking of Twilight, my opinion of Great Gatsby has changed a lot. I think I'm actually kind of disappointed that Gatsby and Daisy don't run away. I'm also very mad at Daisy. I guess I like to believe that the love that she and Gatsby felt for each other was true, but I guess Daisy only saw it as a fling. I feel so bad for Gatsby. He was true to Daisy to the very end and he lived his life for her. I finally understand why he wanted her to confess to never loving Tom: he wanted to believe that she had lived her life in the same way. I know that all good love stories turn out to be tragidies (that's why Twilight is not a good love story :), but I'm still disappointed...
Yeah, I finished the book.
Sorry! I won't tell!
Oh, could we please talk about what Doctor T.J. Eckleburg means?! I still like the book, but I just think it's really sad...

Anonymous said...

Holy cow there are a lot of comments...even though they all aren't book related..haha

This story is just making me mad...I don't understand why it's ending this way. Tom cheats on Daisy, Tom's mistress dies because Daisy accidently ran her over with Gatsby..Gatsby loves Daisy and ends up dying because Wilson thinks that Gatsby killed his wife, not Daisy. What the heck. If I was Daisy I would be really stressed out. REALLY stress out. I wouldn't know what to do...I don't understand how, in the first place, Daisy and Tom worked it out. I wouldn't love anyone who cheated on me...idk they're both dumb. Gah.
