Having finished the novel, I think. . .

What questions do you still have? What still bothers you? What did you love/hate about this novel?

I hated that no one came to the funeral. I hated that we don't know why owl eyes was at the funeral. I hate that its rainig at the funeral. Too typical. I hate that OH MY GOSH! Having finished the novel I feel kind of sad. The reason for that is poor Gatsby. I couldn't believe that Daisy just up and left or disappeared. It was just like he was an old gown she decided she didn't want any more. It broke my lil heart for him when that happened. It was really surprising though when his father showed up. His father just looked around mystified at all of his things. I think that he was really proud of Gatsby for what he had done and was sure of his son going up farther in society. That part made me feel gracious because atleast his father saw what goals he had fulfilled for himself. Though in truth it was to win Daisy's heart.Another thing that made me sad was that his friend from the war wouldn't even come to the funeral. And he avoided Nick to get out of it.Another thing was when Tom acted the way he did. Like he expected an "It's ok, don't worry about it..." from Nick that was pretty bad. I agree with Nick, Gatsby and Daisy don't care who they hurt or what they do. Someone else will just pick up the pieces. In this novel I loved the love story till I found out what was really behind it. I like the book and learned a lot from it. I don't think I will really ever forget it. It's just one of those books that stick with you because of what happened or how it turned out.

After finishing the novel for me it was kind of sad. I know Gatsby's love or obssesion was a little weird but he realized at the end it was not going to happen. I think in a way he maybe just wanted things back the way they were? Or he wanted to find a part that he felt was lost and that was Daisy. I felt bad for the way things ended up for him because Daisy just abandoned him. The only descent friend he had in the end was Nick. It seemed all his other so called "friends" were just aquaintances. Pathetically deep down they were just there for the party. What Nick said in the finale of it all I totally agree with. One very strong point was about Daisy and Tom. I think these two characters are extremely shallow and conceited. When a mess is made they just leave it for someone else to pick up. When Tom expected Nick to be okay with what he had done I thought that was really low. I mean he pretty much killed Gatsby. I just don't understand how someone could live with themselves. In the end the only thing Tom and Daisy care about is money. I was questioning in the end when it was talking about a girl in a white flowy dresses being carried away was that Daisy? Also about what happended to all of Gatsby's things/his memory in life? What I loved about this novel was that it kept me guessing and thinking throughout. Books like this I probably won't forget. I liked the love story but deep down it was not really a love story. Throughout the time I do not think Daisy was really sure about her love. Sadly she cared more about herself than Gatsby.

After finishing this novel I feel satisfied. Everything was to my liking. I don’t mind Gatsby's dead because I started to dislike him after he treated Daisy during the fight. He was worse then Tom because Gatsby talked throughout the whole book how he loved Daisy then started controlling her. Tom did it more for the money and never really loved her. Im also okay with Daisy and Tom getting back together. I am indifferent with Tom but I hope they can work things out so Daisy can live a happy life. If Tom continues to cheat on her then oh well because they are back where they were in the first place and I feel like Daisy would eventually leave Tom even though its against what society thinks is right. Wilson im glad was said to be deranged by grief because I truly believe that is what he was. I hope he gets out of jail and has a good life even though he killed Gatsby. The most satisfying part of the book was that Nick and Jordan didn't get together. Most love stories usually end with everyone being happy with each other and im sick of it. They don't belong together in my mind because she seems too adventurous for him. She would always want to go out while he might want a nice evening at home.

The biggest reason Im glad they didn't get together is Nick seems opposite of everyone and doesn't belong. Every character besides Nick seemed to have their dirty secrets and they lead a double life. Also they were in to drama and gossip. Nick seems more laid back and knows where he is going in life. He is less spontaneous then most and belongs back with his family in the west.

Nothing really bothers me that I can think of at this point. Im still a little fuzzy on Owl Eyes, the billboard, and Gatsby's big project but we will probably go over that on Monday. What I love and hate about this novel are mostly up with what I think about the characters except the one major thing I love about this novel. It’s very realistic and there is no happily ever after like there are in fairy tails.

oh wow, chelsey and courtney finally have nicknames!

totally agree with hope on hating htat no one came to the funeral, and why owl eyes was there
i dislike (hate is strong..) the fact that daisy and tom are back together...then again, they are both *** and probably belong together. I feel very sad/bad/sympathetic for gatsby bc he tried so hard to make friendsa and fit in and no one even knew him or cared enough to go to his funeral. He seems like a great guy after reading the part about his dad. I mean he might hate his past and change his name and do illegal stuff, but he didnt' forget his parents! I dislike the klipspringer guy who only cared about his shoes, what a jerk. i don't think i've felt any strong feelings about the book til now..excep tmaybe the beginning. it kinda botherds me that his dad still thinks his son is a great guy and all but i guess its better than knowing the truth.

nick seems very objective, him comment on tom was that he did what he thought was the truth, and he sees where tom's coming from. it bothers me that daisy is a total coward! technically, if i stretch it far enough, she indirectly killed gatsby by not telling tom the truth and then tom telling wilson it was gatsby. and then jordan's comment to nick? that was dumb too. I feel this..oh yes catherine, i don't like her either, why did she have to protect tom's secret? i mean her sis is dead!...anywya i feel this ending is very movie-ish, where everyone comes back and there's like a little summary for everyone (and insight)
?-- does nick still hate everything about gatsby? why was he the only friend then? that didn't really make sense

i agree with courtney that this wasn't really a love story

@ eric, you have a very unique view..but you seem kinda too positive, i mean daisy happy life?
and i don't think this is any more realistic than other chick flicks, how often do ppl nowadays care that much for their love to do what gatsby did? and how often do ppl get back together after lots of cheating and lies? i mean this and fairy tales are like two extremes, real life is in the middle.

Having finished the novel, I think that it was a 7 out of 10 book for me, It was a decent book and not boring like reading a biography or something.
I have no questions mainly because of me not caring atm because of RP, I do have questions however on the research paper.
It still bothers me that we climb slowly while reading the book, then abruptly a giant turn happens, like getting shot in the face when your climbing a cliff. So he just dies, and people appear to care but not really care and not go to his funeral... "udgh.. I sorta fogot my uh lets see tinnis sheos". Daisy, not heard from again while the book ends, is also upsetting. I did see that much into Tom until this chapter, I now hate him after his encounter with Nick.
I sort of like this book ending, I don't know why, (I usually hate the "the book ends and you assume what happens next" kind of deal. It didn't end like the and they lived happily ever after kind of books either, which is what I was 60 percent expectin with Nick. But, Tom and Daisy, no progress there. I like and hate idk which this giant event and wow we at the beginning of the book again, excluding the Nick getting to know Gastby alot...ok I don't like how that's worded, and I do not wish to fix it.. so I won't. I don't like it that theres a tremendous amount of people at Gatsy's Funeral, at least he could have had a decent one with all he's been though, only his dad, which was like the house was crack to him, Owl Eyes, which I find weird, unless they knew eachother, which they prolly didn't, minister and servents and someone else, and excessive commas. Tom has 3 letters in his name. Daisy just disappears and gasby eat bullet, that what I hate about this.
I was expecting at the end Daisy be with Gasby and Tom is scewed over somehow, then it will be another happy ending like most the movies and books that I read... so then an A-bomb falls and they all die and the end.

...that I will celebrate no more reading 3 books at the same time!!!
I read the book and I liked it. (that line has no musical connection at all!!!) It was way better than the fire starter that I read for this research paper. I feel kinda bad for Gatsby because his dream was crushed into millions of tiny pieces (even though it was boardering on obsession...) It bothers me that Daisy and Tom made up and will keep living a rich, miserable life style. I don't think I have anything that I hate, or love about this book...it was just better than This Side of Paradise. Maybe because of the diference in time...This was the book Fitzgerald wrote that takes place in the 20's right? I'm curious to know what happens to Gatsby's stuff like Hope....and what happened to his father? I got lost on the last few pages...

Alright...I guess it's my turn. I wouldn't say I loved the novel, but I definitely didn't dislike it. It did make you think. It also made you like or dislike certain characters, and then possibly completely changed your opinion of that person (Gatsby). The ending does leave a few open-ended questions, however. As Hope stated, we never really know who "Owl-Eyes" is. Maybe he was an old business partner, who knows. And although Gatsby's likeability meter was decreasing toward the end, you have to feel bad for the guy when nobody would come to his funeral, even his closest friends. I admire Nick for trying so hard to get people to come, though. I really do think Nick is a good guy. As Eric said, he doesn't really fit in with these characters, because he seems like a much better person than the others. With the whole Tom and Daisy thing, I guess I'm somewhat indifferent. If that is really what Daisy wants, then so be it. Tom might not have enough money to satisfy Daisy though...ha. Well, I think my time here is coming to a close...WAIT!!! Is "Owl-eyes" Eckleberg?!?!?
Okay, now I'm leaving. Buh-bye now.

I just about cried. Give me a second.

Okay. Gatsby obviously died, but NO ONE came to the funeral except Nick, his dad, his servants, and some drunk "owl eyes" dude. Nothing says "obviously no one cared about you" like having no one show up at a funeral. They had enough time to attend his lavish parties, but can't find enough time to see his funeral. That sickens me.

Poor Nick. He has no idea what's all going on. He's trying to make everything okay, but he realizes how much Gatsby wasn't known or liked a lot. Yeah, people would tolerate him, but like him? Nick figures this out. I would hate to get stuck planning a friend's funeral and find out no one's coming. And then on top of that to find out that Gatsby's dad is still alive (way to go there, Gatsby), and yada yada.

Daisy is a )_&@#*(_y&*(_!. Couldn't even send a flower or note. *****.

Tom is a @#%)&*(&*()#%&*(). Not realizing what he did wrong. ***-****.

Jordan is okay. SHe got stuck in a horribly awkward situation. THings between her and Nick are nick's fault, and she handles it the best she can.

Why is the owl eyes guy important? obviously Fitzgerald isn't going to pull him in randomly, but I still don't understand completely. And what is going to happen to Gatsby's house? (BTW-I thought it was nice of Nick to erase the obscene word on the house). Why did Daisy and Tom go back to Chicago? New start or something? IDK.

The entire book is kind of naturalist. Tom should die, because he's being an ***-**** to Daisy, but instead Gatsby dies. Yada yada.

This book wasn't my favorite of all time, but it was okay. I love the eye billboard. THat's pretty awesome.

bionmer is my verification word. so silly!

I would give this book a 7 out of 10...yay Adam! It was a good book in general, but a bit too predictable at times, except the end which was really good, but made me angry. Now, let's see...I think I'll answer these questions out of order if that's a'ight.

First, I like the poetic justice of Daisy running over Tom's.... other woman(keeping it PG + chill box girl it'll be ok. Take some deep breaths and think of nice shiny Volvos). I thought Myrtle's death was completely justified... and gory... but I did feel bad that she never got to be with Tom, thus taking him away from Daisy, leaving her free to leave with Gatsby. I don't feel bad for Tom at all because he's just too hypocritical. He yells at Daisy for cheating on him once, but how many times has HE done it? Anyway, although she does it unknowingly, Daisy takes the first step (or speed bump...it was WAY to good to pass up ☺)to getting her life back to normal by getting rid of Tom's ...distraction.

Second, I hate that no one came to Gatsby's funeral! The least everyone could have done was to go just to mourn the loss of any more parties! Sure that would be pretty shallow of them, but they all owed Gatsby some sort of gratitude for everything he'd done for them. I also REALLY don't like Daisy. Everyone seems to want her to be happy, but honestly, I want her to regret staying with Tom and be miserable and unhappy for not (as Jake says) "growing some" and leaving him to be with her TRUE lover, Gatsby.

Third, I think I'll put the things that bother me in question form... kill two birds with one stone, and what not. I was really interested to see if Gatsby would leave Nick everything, or send some money to his "dead" parents in "San Francisco". Do we ever find out? Also, I had the same question as 57yards(who is that? I can never tell cuz the nicknames are always so random)is Owl Eyes Eckleberg? And why are the big eyes so significant? I understand that it's like God's eyes always watching, but it seems like there's more to it...? Finally, WHY DO DAISY AND TOM GET BACK TOGETHER? That just sucks, but I think the reason they skip town is so that no one will suspect Tom or Daisy of being tied up in Gatsby's death...WHICH THEY WERE!!!!!!!!!

Oh yes, now about Nick...I'm happy that he stuck with Gatsby and it was very nice of him to try and get some people at the funeral. I was also proud that he broke things off with Jordan, because he really doesn't belong in HER world: riches, drunk snobs, multiple scandals, etc. I think Nick should just go back home, and learn to stay out of his cousin's affairs, but we don't really find out what he'll do, do we?

Okay, I think that covers just about evrything...BTW, Eric, Wilson is dead, not in jail. He shot Gatsby and then killed himself. They found his body by the pool, remember? I really like your way of looking at the story in general, though. ☺ Cynical, yet somehow optimistic...interesting combo.

Eric you do realize that Wilson killed himself to...

Having finished the novel, I think that I don't like this story. :)
It's nothing personal..I just didn't like it..not because it ended bad, it just kind of bored me..lol BUT it wasn't that bad. I'm not really mad that Gatsby died..he kind of deserved it in a way..that's what you get for trying to force love! And Daisy and Tom should just burn in H E double hockey sticks because they are dumb rich people. Mr. Wilson is a dumb face for shooting Gatsby in the 1st place and then killing himself. Who does that? What a friggen weenie. People who kill themselves are weak. Gah. But anyways..idk I also thought it was rude that barely anyone went to Gatsby's funeral. Even if I didn't like someone, I would still go to their funeral...I mean come on..they died..how rude can someone be? Jeeze.

Alright, sooo...

I felt that for the most part, this book seemed pretty random. I mean, I guess 'things happen for a reason.' I just didn't understand what the reasons were for a lot of stuff that happened. I don't think it was fair for Gatsby to die, he really didn't do too much that was wrong. I also got angry when no one importand showed up for his funeral except his dad. What happened to Daisy? After all he did for her, I'm sure she still had feeling for him. Tom is jerk and cheated on Daisy. Why couldn't she see that? Tom is also a jerk for telling what's his name that the car that ran over Myrtle was Gatsby's. This book was pretty interesting. It's not that I didn't like it, I just didn't like the dang results! :)

arg! poor gatsby! he had all these shady "friends" that werent really friends. they wouldnt even take time to pay their respects for gatsby at his funeral!!! how stupid! its kind of bizarre that his dad could make the journey for the funeral but his friends that live close cannot take an afternoon off to visit. everybody thought his dad was dead!! if i were his father i would not be happy with gatsby. also his father is rather greedy. he was so happy when he saw how rich gatsby was. ridiculous!!!

i would like to know who gets all of gatsby's things and also if daisy ever mourns gatsby's death. her and tom go off together but was it something daisy wanted to do or did tom just tell her that they are going away. also what happens with jordan. her and nick should still hook up and then live in gatsby's house and make lots of cute spoiled kids. that way this story has a sort of good ending!

i guess i dont really love this novel but i definately wouldnt say that i hate it. it was good but i dont know there is just something about it that really bothers me; however i cannot say exactly what.

Anonymous said...

hope you were "forest"?? lol k weeellllllll...i dont really have any questions about the novel cause the end made me mad!!! the whole daisy being a !@%$#^ made me mad and that no one even cared about gatsby at all (besides his dad) i dont even think nick really cared all that much i think he just wanted to get away from the madness i liked the story but hated it at the same time does that make any sense??

im usually one for an ending where everyone dies and every thing is sad but this story was so effin sad at the end!!!! poor gatsbys dad!!!!! he was so cute i imagined him in my head with little overalls on and a pitchfork(not for sure why a pitchfork???) and holding the picture all hopeful and sad and stuff. he was kinda pathetic but i felt really bad for him :(

daisy and tom can burn in you know where

nick is okish but kind of boring to me

gatsby= dead

mr. owl eye glasses= im not for sure what the heck he is supposed to be

gatsbys dad= sad times 3 million!!!

fulmer is my word verification...?

okay so having finished the novel i kinda have mixed emotions. i thought that this was going to be a really good book full of love and happiness..but after finishing it, it wasn't wat i expected. i personally didn't really like the book that much. well it wasn't bad, but it wasn't one of the best books i've ever read. i jus hated the ending, it jus runions everything. the fact that gatsby dies, daisy goes back to tom and that no one comes to gatsbys funeral, is jus depressing. I don't think that gatsby really deserved to die, i mean ya he got a little stalkerish but he wasn't a bad guy, he worked hard to get to were he was and i think that he deserved a little love, and personally, i don't think daisy deserved him. he had so much love to give and daisy was to busy worrying bout how much money she had, to worry bout gatsby. and it makes me really sad that no one showed up to his funeral, except nick his dad and owl eyes, after how nice he was to everyone. that kind makes me mad, to think that some ppl just don't care and can't seem to find the time to come to his funeral when they came to all of his parties. i still think that tom is freggin retard and he was the one who should have died.lol daisy is jus a push over and don't like her ne more, and kinda the same with jordan, they are both jus evil, self centerd, selfish little girls! lol.....so idk... i guess over all it was an ok book. it had some good parts and bad parts...i jus did not like the ending....but im also not sure if i get all the meanings to why everything happened the way it did. like how owl eyes jus shows up out of no where, that was kinda weird, but then again this book is good at having weird things happen. :)

Alright well obviously the thing that is the most bothersome about this story is that Gatsby dies in the end, and his dreams of ever having Daisy die with him. But, I still don't get why none of Gatsby's former friends showed up to pay respects at his funeral. Heck, even Daisy, the woman he loved more than anything in the world, and the person who loved him, wouldn't show up. I, like everyone else, was wondering also why the owl eyes guy was at the funeral. Of all the people that should've been there, he seems the least likely to actually come.

Anonymous said...

I definately do not get why owleyes comes back. Why doe he matter there? Right now...Gatsby's death still shocks me a little. Ummm but unlike some other people I was not at all suprised that no one ahowed up for gatsby's funeral...it seems like in their society people only use other people but really could give a crap about them as a person. This seems esspecially true in gatsby's case. Everyonw wanted to go to his parties for free alcohol and fun but they honestly thought that he got what he deserved at his death. I guess i am bothered most by Daisy. She along with the reat of the characters doesnt even care about gatsby. She just pretended to through this whoel thing. I sort of think I hate here the most out of all of the characters...yes even more than tom. I was disappointed in the whole nick and jordan thing...why doesnt he try to keep her if he even "half loves" her? And i really liked that even when nick just sees tom on the street he makes it known to tom that he doesnot like him or agree with the way he "got rid" of the gatsby issue. Tom is a low life...but then again most of the characters are...then again most people are now too. Hmmm...

ok now that im done with this book im not too happy. so i go through and read this book expecting some happy dramatic ending that ties everything toegether and what do i get? Gatsby dies, what kind of story kills of the main character in the second to last chapter, Tom and daisy move away(tom is most likely to get another girl, stupid daisy) tom is the reason gatsby is dead(i hate hime all the more) nick and jordan break up and hes left alone, we find out that that gatsby wasnt such a good guy(even though we figured that) because hes a mafia boss or something and no one shows up at his funeral, and poor mr wilson doesnt get his revenge and dies(stupid). WHAT THE ****. What was the point of reading this story and wasting my time just to be utterly disappointed that gatsby doesnt use his connections to get rid of tom or something cool like that. the only good and semi funny thing that happened is myrtles death and that was only remotely cool. Sigh i guess they just dont make them as good as they used to.

Okay, so in the end, I feel terrible about Gatsby. I mean, he's wrongly murdered, basically no one attends his funeral, and everyone abandons him and his good name with stupid rumors. And i'm especially mad at Daisy. She couldn't have at least shown the decency to attend his funeral?! This being the person who was in "love" with him..sounds just a little like a gold digger. Oh, and i'm upset that Nick decides to leave the city. I mean, I guess he's decided that people are shallow in the East of the country, but what is he honestly going to do back in the midwest? Nothing. Ugh... And Gatsby's father... how sad that he never got to see his son before he died. And I don't understand why people were so mean to Gatsby. He never REALLY did much harm to anybody. It makes me a little confused on the title of the book as well. Did Fitzgerald name it that because he threw great great parties or.. he was an influential character? Because if we were going with the person that had the best moral fiber, I'd say it's Nick.

I'm sorry this is kind of choppy. Lots of comments and I've been writing transitions for my paper all weekend haha.

okay, so things did not turn out the way i thought. there were no violent shootings, and no 'i can't live without you, so i'll kill myself too' deaths. i am disappointed. i didn't really hate the fact that no one came to gatsby's funeral. i kind of saw that coming. he obviously had no friends. he was just under the impression that everyone loved him, but they really just liked his parties. his dad, nick, and the owl-eye guy were the only ones there. just a guess: owl-eyes has something to do with the tj eckleburg billboard. he pops up in random places just like the sign. i don't know if that is significant at all, or if i completely misunderstood his character. i hate how daisy and tom ran off as if nothing happened. that makes me really mad. i wanted there to be a big showdown between tom and gatsby over daisy, but i guess not. this was not a love story. it was about a guy who wasted a life chasing after someone who didn't even care about him enough to come to his funeral. did we ever find out what happens to gatsby's things? i think fiztgerald has schadenfreude. did i use that word right? it sounds weird. he enjoys writing about the misfortunes of others. maybe it makes him feel better about himself. if you look at it from that point of view, the book is kind of funny.

ok, I don't really have any further questions about the novel. I don't really like the ending, but I think it ends as it is supposed to. I am totally bothered by the fact that Daisy didn't even bother to come to Gatsby's funeral. In fact, I'm bothered that NO ONE came to Gatsby's funeral. Like I said in class, this is no longer an issue of right and wrong. It is simply about who is the best person. In the end, the reader not only pities Gatsby, but they have also grown to love him. This is what sets him apart from all other tragic heros. I used to think that Daisy and Tom deserve punishment, but then I thought about it. Isn't it punishment enough that they are who they are? I mean, seriously...They may have all of the wealth and social standing, but in the end they are unhappy. They may not get punished by the law, but they are punished by their own lifestyles. I just realized something about Nick. He has the ultimate power because he knows the truth about everyone. You know how he said that he was an honest person? Well, he is. He holds the undeniable truth and he has the power to keep it or to tell it. I just realized that his definition of honesty and the definition of society today have two different meanings...Today, we think that honest means that the person in question always TELLS the truth. In Nick's eyes it was the person who KNOWS/HOLDS the truth. TADA!! wow...that was totally profound for 12:20...anyway, I really enjoyed the novel. I thought it was beautifully written. It really tested some of my morals too! :) see you in class tomorrow!

I liked the ending. It was simple and it leaves things somewhat open-ended, but it makes you think. Tom is still the shady, unscrupulous person in the end. Daisy cut off all contact with Gatsby, which was awful, but I see how it helped the story's drama.

Gatsby was a man with his soul invested in the past and his body lingering in the present. He had no meaning or purpose and was completely motivated by his infatuation with Daisy. No one showed up to his funeral, and his bewildered father showed up way too late to be helpful. Its sad how people as charismatic as Gatsby can have their personalities overshadowed by their flaws.

The novel was depressingly real, not literally but symbolisticly... if that makes any sense at all. I didn't necessarilly enjoy the story but I enjoyed reading it for the thoughts it evoked.

I still don't see any signifigance of owl eyes and I hate klipspringer...I bet he's a future hippy.

Word Verification: manglito...hmm, sounds like one of those crazy celebrity baby names

Sorry that this is late. I forgot. I real liked this book which is unusual for me. I bothered me that no one came to the funeral. I mean come on everyone went to his party but no one came to his funeral. I did like that owl eyes came. I loved the style of this novel and the time era a lot.
