On page 100 when Joe hit Janie in front of everyone it made me think about how some situations never change. Throughout time men (or women)have abused their spouses and the spouse won't or can't leave because of beliefs or because they don't have anywhere else to go. Even though Joe hits Janie a couple different times she never even really thinks of leaving him. If I would have been in this situation I would have left him a long time ago and I also would never have let him start treating me poorly. To me Janie just seems like she can't do anything for herself and she doesn't have the strength to actually fight for herself.
...how great it is to still be single and not have to go through what Janie is going through. Just when Janie thinks she has something better, it turns out worse than before. Even though I still think Janie needs to screw her head on tighter, I have to give her kudos for never giving up. Her pursuit of happiness is stronger than ever and after forty years and two trashy husbands, she is still looking for the perfect man. I still think this book is less than likeable. Maybe if, I don't know, someone got shot or something, it might be more interesting.
Never give in to temptation! Something may seem all new and exciting, but in the end you just feel let down. Janie is upset because she wasn't feeling love in her marriage and she didn't like to work, so when a man walks by tempting her with a life full of no work and being spoiled, who wouldn't be tempted? She gave in to easily because change was just too tempting and in the end she ends up getting trampled on by a man who doesn't really appreciate her... hey that sounds familiar, women not getting appreciated...
After Joe died it didn't really seem to me that it affected Jainie a whole lot. It seemed like she just moved on with her life...especially when on page 108 it said, "She took careful stock of herself, then combed her hair and tied it back up again. Then she starched and ironed her face, forming it into just what people wanted to see, and opened the window and cried....". This just shows that she really truely was no sad and she felt the need to just show the world what they expected to see from her after her husband died. -roxy_
...that Joe really loved Janie and wanted to give her everything that she wanted, but he was too proud to show her that he loved her or to treat her like he truly wanted to. I also think that Janie loved Joe regardless of all her talk about wanting something better. I do not think that Joe treats Janie as bad as some of the other men in the novel would have. Joe would have been the perfect husband if he was not so proud and jealous. The dialogue is very easy to read now that I am getting used to it. This section made me think that this novel is getting better.
This section made me think Janie brings everything on herself. She has a good life with Logan, maybe not perfect and totally happy, but still it was a good life. Then she meets Joe, marries him the same day she leaves Logan and expects everything to be okay? The fact Joe stole another man's wife should have been a warning sign to Janie that Joe wasn't as perfect as he seems. Finally, Joe dies and 6 months later she meets Tea Cake and sleeps with him. To me, it's like Janie likes putting herself into these hard situations. If she would know her own mind and stand-up for herself, I bet half of the situations she gets into would have never happened.
This section made me think that Janie is a self-absorbed she-devil. She only cares about herself. She knows Jody’s body is deteriorating and can’t wait until he dies so she can be free. To speed up this process Janie insults Jody and humiliates him in front of his friends. When Jody is close to death, Janie finally tries to comfort him. Instead their conversation escalates into an argument and she makes him cry. Still she continues to unleash her almighty wrath upon her husband until he dies. Janie had a great opportunity for a strong relationship but let it slip away because she couldn’t work out her problems. She needs to learn how to solve her problems and not bottle up her anger inside. -Tony
This section made me think how much Janie’s life had change since she got married. In a way I felt sorry for Janie. Her life is full of orders; she had no real voice of her own in her marriage. Although Janie finds a way to give herself some form of freedom, she isn’t really free till Jody’s death. Life didn’t really turn out for Janie the way she had planned it, although I don’t believe that she isn’t to blame for some of her unhappiness I do feel there were things that she had no control over.
...how "love" can be such a dangerous thing. The thoughts and feelings of two separate individuals are thrown into a mix hopefully to create something beautiful, but often times the whole equation just collapses leaving the two originators with less than what they had to begin with. No one really knows the definite characteristics of true and unconditional love so it is always a gamble when looking for it. When two people do find it though, it is worth all the heart ache and bloodshed that brought them together.

The section on pages 92 to 95 made me really angry. I saw Jody as controlling and jealous before this, but this passage shows an een worse side of Joe. Mrs. Robbins went to Joe, her mayor, for help because she didn't have any food for her and her children. Jody gets Mrs. Robbins' hopes up and leads her to believe that he's going to give her some meat, but then Jody cuts off only a small portion. This angered me because I didn't understand how he could be that cruel. And then when the men are talking on the porch, they're just evil. they say that Mr. Robbins should kill his wife for embarassing him. It upset me to reak that the men would see a woman begging for food as an embarrassment for the man who is starving her, instead of feeling sympathy for her. Also, they talk of killing their wives and babies like it's no big deal. Where's the compassion?!?
...about killing that pig Joe. I really hate people who hit girls. I was brought up by a man who never has hit a girl in his life but once, and that was his sister when he was seven. I do not tolerate abuse, and i often try my best to beat the %$@$@! out of people who it girls. If that is not a reason to get into it with someone, i dont know what is. I wanted to rip out joe's name every time i saw it. I have experienced too much of that crap growing up and am kind of upset that i need to read about it now. SPAZZ
.... karma is real. Janie was upset that her marraige wasn't good enough so she runs off with the next guy she meets. Ironically, she was probably better off with her first husband, because he wouldn't hit her ever. Sure at first Jody seemed like the better deal, but now she actually has to do something and he beats her. I'm not trying to justify Jody hitting Janie, but you could see it coming...
...that Janie is pretty much an idiot. True she had a right to stand up to Joe, there's no arguing that, but the fact that she is even with him in the first place is fairly dumb on her part. She shouldn't have left Logan in the way she did. She kind of just threw herself into the relationship with Joe without even thinking. I'm not saying she should have stayed with Logan but I am saying that she should learn to get to know her men a little bit better.

this section made me think of how my marriage will be and if i will ever be happy. Janie left her old husband for a better life but it turned out worse.marriages are fine at first but as you go on it wont be as great as when it began. when you first get married you arent family yet, you act differently with your spouse than you do later in life. i know all about it. i hope my wife doesnt beat me. i hope i have freedom and can do what i want, but still fulfill both our needs. hopefully i can actually love me wife too.
