I was right about most of Gatsby’s history. I figured he worked on a yacht or some other boat when Nick was looking at the pictures Gatsby had. I also knew Gatsby sold alcohol because I figured that’s a pretty fast way to get rich during prohibition. After Tom was getting suspicious in chapter 6 I knew the truth was going to come out soon and it would probably involve a fight. What I didn’t know was how big the fight was going to be. During the time in New York I lost my respect and liking for Gatsby because of the way he acted. I thought he would be more of a gentleman about it and keep his cool but he was just as bad if not worse then Tom. I really disliked it when Gatsby started speaking for Daisy and telling Tom she never loved him when she never said that. I’m glad that Daisy said she did love Tom at one point so Gatsby would be hurt also. I think they were both acting like jerks and idiots in front of Nick and Jordan and don’t think either one deserves Daisy.

I didn’t see the car collision coming although I should have because of all the foreshadowing we talked about in class about how cars symbolize death and destruction and stuff. I also didn’t expect Fitzgerald to describe that scene with so much gory detail. They should have stopped because now Gatsby could get in a lot more trouble, since he is taking the blame. Although, I’m glad he may get in trouble because if it weren’t for him and Tom fighting then Daisy wouldn’t have been driving so fast and Myrtle may have lived. Wilson I think should feel bad for what he said and did to her and he contributed to her death.

Hmmm Only one commentso far...and by Eric!!!!

So I already knew that Mrs. Wison was going to die...but now I have a weird feeling of sadness for her...Something about being locked up in a room...that sounds oddly familar...hmmmm

Then there was the fact that Gatsby lost his cool in NYC with Tom, who is still an Abby, but I do have more respect for him now because he does seem to love Daisy some. I also agree with Eric. Gatsby shouldn't speak for others like he did. (for now) Did she mean to run Myrtle over??

Gatsby. We learn more about Dan Cody and James Gatz's past and how they are intertwined. We also learn that Gatsby didn't marry Daisy at first because he was poor like Fitzgerald when he wanted to marry Zelda. (It sickens me to have to relive some of this only in a different book...) Daisy still loved Jay, but learned to have some feelings for Tom, even though it seems she found out about his affair.

DID I NOT SAY THAT WE DIDN'T KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT GATSBY IN CLASS!?!?!? AND EVERYONE WAS SAYING HOW HE WAS A STALKER, BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!! I WAS RIGHT!!! WE DIDN'T KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM AND WE STILL DON'T!!

Then Gatsby had to fire all of his regular servants because of rumors that were getting out, and he replaced them with that other guys brothers and sisters right?

His "durg stores" were how he got his alcohol...I had a pretty good idea about that too. One thing that really bugs me is that in Gatsby's past, that lady who came on board with Cody left with all of his money even though (I think) it was to go to Gatsby. He just mysteriously dies a week later...hmmm sounds like SOMEONE that got rat poison for "rats", but the person who she was seeing was never seen again...so many ties with this book...it's scary. Of course, when is anything in our class NOT scary?

Wilson I'm not sure about...he locked Myrtle in her room and they were going to move because she wanted them to...hmmm, yet she came out screeming and was run over by Daisy. I will say that locking someone in a room has some proceeding bad effects... I think Wilson contributed to Myrtle's death in a way...

Nick is just stuck in between all of this, and is a single 30 year old. Jorden knows this and is making it seem like she likes him. I'm not sure on that either.

Question-WHO RIDES HORSES IN NYC?

Tom is a large hyporcryte. I can run around and do whatever I want, but how does Daisy know this Gatsby guy? Yada yada. That actually really bothered me. I mean, I didn't think too highly of him before, but during these chapters, he acted really high and mighty and better than everyone else.

It was sad that Daisy didn't really like the party and how Tom made the whole deal miserable. But as my earlier journal said, she's an airhead, and also has old money. My little respect for her just went down a lot in these two chapters. She could see that Gatsby was doing a lot for her and she threw it all away.

And then Gatsby stops throwing parties. He's completely changing himself for a girl. I enjoy how he hires new servants so they won't talk about him and Daisy messing around in the afternoons.

And all respect was lost for Daisy and Gatsby when Daisy invited Gatsby over for lunch and they had the little mini arguments with Tom about who Daisy loves (and strangely I felt bad for Tom then) and whether Daisy was going to leave Tom or not. And Tom is drinking alchohol->why is he so against Gatsby for selling it? Oh yeah, he's also an airhead.

When Nick realized that it was his birthday, I laughed so loud it woke someone up. It fits very well with our class... the whole add thing...

And then Myrtle dies! I didn't like the description of her dead body. That was soemthing I could have done without. I felt bad for Tom after finding out his wife doesn't love him, and then his mistress dies (holy cow, it's a soap opera!!!)

Although it serves Tom right to have had Daisy actually kill her rather than Gatsby. But really, it was either her getting killed or Daisy and Gatsby getting killed. It's still sad, though.

Sorry for the randomness. I was shocked when I read all of it. I pretty much hate all of the characters except Nick and Jordan. Why do people like this book? What does the yellow car represent? The ultimate evil? What is it? AHHHHHHH

Anonymous said...

Well, I can't say I didn't see something like this coming at all... reading about how Myrtle dies was a bit of a shock, especiallly once you realize who it was that ran into her. I'm not really surprised at all that Daisy and Gatsby couldn't keep their whole deal a secret, Gatsby seemed determined to open his mouth at one point or another. I also fell kinda bad for him, because Tom seems like a huge jerk and is pretty much the sole reason that Gatsby can't be with Daisy.

so i kinda thought gatsby was not always telling the truth about his past which i was right about. he hid a few things about how he really got his money and the fact that didnt really go to oxford, he was just there for like 5 months. However, i did not see gatsby acting the way he did when he told tom that he and daisy were in love. i guess i thought he would be a little more gentleman about it. actually i kind of thought daisy would be the one that had enough and would blow up at tom not gatsby. i found the whole situation kind of weird to be honest. tom suspected daisy of seeing gatsby so he invited gatsby to dinner? i guess i would have thought he would just leave it be because he had his own side relationship. what a hypocrit!it was also very odd that tom brought up all of this stuff about gatsby in front of jordan and nick. that is kind of a personal subject but they just went at it. it would be really awkward to be jordan or nick sitting in on this intimate discussion.

it was really ironic that daisy hit/killed myrtle. i feel bad for daisy. that would be such a horrible thing to go through. i could not live with myself knowing that i killed a person, i cried for an hour when i hit a raccoon! i really want to know if she is going to find out that she hit tom's mistress. it will also be interesting to see if tom finds out that daisy hit her and not gatsby.

i am kind of confussed as to whether or not daisy is actually going to leave tom. gatsby was doing all the talking for her.

ok first of all im never wrong. Secon of all.... i dont kno what there was 2 b really wrong about... uh.. i guess i thougt that Daisy never really loved Tom at all and she does. Uh...yeah. Surprises... Well Myrtle dying(she did die right?) was very exciting and unexpected.. was this on purpose? i hope so it would much more funny. Firing all of his staff.. that wasnt so mucj exprcted. His whole past wasnt really the biggest surprise. something was up obviously. yeah, lets see... the whole fight in the hotel room that kinda goes along with what i said earlier. And y did they switch cars?? that part didnt really make any sense. This journal is taking me a while cuz i keep having to delete a bunch cuz im trying to type without looking at my hands. i suck. and i keep cheating.hehe...sigh...

HOLY POO!!!!

Okay now that I have that out of my system...I definately saw the Gatsby alcohol thing coming like a in chapter two, but the yacht thing confuses me. And what gigantic significance did that Danny guy have? The Tom thing wasn't a surprise at all either. When Tom started getting suspicious I think we all probably had thoughts of a fight soon to follow. On the other hand I was super surprised by the way Gatsby acted about it. All so far Gatsby was played as this sudostalker creepy dude who was absolutly obsessed with his first and only love, but he still seemed like a niceish guy who I could sympathize with. Then during the fight I decided that he is just like Tom and wanted to "One up" Tom, like most males, using Tom's own wife. At this point my attitude toward Gatsby has totally changed! He is no longer a nise guy who creeps me out a little. Instead he is a pig just like all the others(sorry guys for this steriotype).

May I also say that Gatsby was once again proven to be a little stalkerish when he said he wanted to wait near the house until Daisy went to sleep. Now I know what you are going to say, "He just wanted to protect her." (Note that if impersonalting this statement as made by many Girls in our class it would probably be said in a shill semi anoying, oh its so cute voice, one which I DO NOT HAVE).

On the topic of the car thing...HOW IRONIC!!! Daisy hits Tom's lover withan automobile! PRICELESS!!!! WHile reading at my grandmother's thanksgiving get together today IT MADE MY DAY!!

Now I am going to rant! Why must I attend family get togethers where everyone just pretends to like everyone else? Or better yet where they dont even pretend to like each othe? The world may never know.

A P.S. at the beginging :) ((Why would he want to change his name??))
Another P.S. at the beginging ((What does P.S. mean?)) :)

Okayyyyyyyyy, so. I was totally fooled about Gatsby's backround..hah, I believe what the writer tells me, but no! No more will that ever happen..Idk I guess I kind of expected Gatsby to have something else that made him so rich. Bootlegging would probably make you really rich, but I think that it's weird that he's bootlegging alcohol even though he's against drinking...
OOOMG. I hate Tom. What a dumb face. haha like that word? I do. :) But really, he is. Why would he care about what Daisy does, because he has (had) his own little relationship of his own with someone else. Gah! Dumb face!By the way, GATSBY, money doesn't buy happiness!!!!! And what's up with you talking for Daisy???! (I'm talking to Gatsby right now if you haven't noticed)) Maybe Daisy DOES love Tom even though he has done hurtful things to her. YOU AIN'T KNOW HER LIFE!
And whoa. I can't belive they hit and killed Myrtle!!Ay carumba!! NOW Tom is gonna have more of a reason to not be okay with you and Daisy!! You're a dumb face, too!!!!! Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeezeeeeeee drama drama drama. wooo.
A real P.S. ((Hope you're not always right)) :)

Hello everybody!! I'm in Minnesota now and it's friggin' cold!! brrr...
Ok, so I don't think I really tried to figure Gatsby out becuase I figured that he had an interesting and complex history that I wouldn't be able to guess...Ok, so he's a pirate...so what? That makes him like Johnny Depp...and more attractive...
I'm still not sure about him. There are a lot of things that I want to know about Gatsby.
Ok, I totally wasn't expecting the confrontation in the hotel room...or the fact that Daisy kills Myrtle...that's ironic...I was angry, though...HOW CAN GATSBY JUST EXCUSE DAISY?! I UNDERSTAND THAT SHE SUFFERED FROM SHOCK, BUT HE'S HELPING HER HIDE HER CRIME!! THAT IS WRONG. NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU LOVE/ARE OBSESSED WITH SOMEONE, IT IS WRONG. ok, I'm calm now...I had to get that out of my system...GATSBY YOU'RE SUCH AN IDIOT!!...sorry, terrets. Oh, my gosh!! We just decided to watch WALL*E. I'm going to have to leave you all. I expect you to read this in class tomorrow, Mrs. Svoboda...so I can be with all of you in spirit...
P.S. have you ever heard the song "waiting" by Trapt? listen to the lyrics...it can totally be related to this book...

ok..so i was right about tom that he is a big hypocrite and he only cares about himself! although it did surprise me that he defended daisy a little when he found out about gatsby and daisy..
...i had a hunch that gatsby wasn't telling the whole truth and that he had a mysterious backround. plus i kinda figured that the whole thing about him and daisy would get out sooner or later bc he loves her so much and he just seemed to excited to get tom out of the picture. also, i wasn't really expecting gatsby to get in that big fight with tom. bc gatsby didn't seem like that kind of guy to do that, he seems so laid back and cool but i guess he probably did that bc he wants daisy so bad, but still...
i have to agree with eric that i did not see the car crash coming and i was surprised that myrtle died. and i didn't put the whole death and destruction thing, with cars, until now. and i was even more surprised at the fact that it was daisy and gatsby who hit her car.

At this point, I don't really know whether I was wrong or right about Daisy and Gatsby. I still think that I would love for Daisy to leave Tom for Gatsby. However.. I don't know why she's blind and keeps doubting her love for him. I guess it's not necessarily doubting, but giving Tom more chances. I feel that Gatsby and Daisy have proved their love for each other, in front of Tom even. Dumb romances are confusing.

I honestly didn't expect Tom to allow a lot of what he has been allowing Daisy to do. I would have expected him to be a hypocrite and keep Daisy from going over to Jay Gatsby's house with out him. I would also think that he would make up an excuse in order to keep her from going to his parties in the first place instead of tagging along to be a look out.

I especially didn't see the accident in chapter seven coming! Why was Daisy driving anyway? I think it is so sweet that Gatsby is deciding to take the blame. I think it really shows how much he will do for Daisy in order to win her over Tom. I think she should just stop being dumb.. like seriously. Gatsby has all the money anyway..

By the way.. only seven blog responses? dang.. what a let down tonight.

Just kidding, there has been more posts. And I forgot you had to proof them all before they were put on here. I had a little freak out too Kaylyn! haha

So...Gatsby is slowly degrading his character for an airhead, grand. I knew he had to be involved in some type of illegal business since he regained his money so fast after he lost it all. Plus now he is getting more and more involved with Mr. Wolfsheim, which can't be good. I assumed Tom would realize what was happening sooner or later, but I didn't expect anyone's reactions. Gatsby became even more obsessed and protective, and in turn made himself seem even more arrogant than Tom. Tom showed some emotion for Daisy, and I get the feeling that he cares for her, but has a difficult time showing it. I also think there's going to be an interesting series of events as a result of Daisy's accident (typical female driver!). I think when Gatsby saw Tom and Daisy's baby, he freaked and acted irrationally. Uh... Dr. Eckleberg comes into play, I don't really know the signifigance of it but....whatever.

Im suffering a severe case of writers block due to the massive headache I got from getting royally stomped this weekend. So, I hope I can get something done on my paper soon....

P.S. = post-script for whovever said that.....im done

the whole thing with how gatsby was suppost get all that money throw me off. I was right about how gatsby made his money. you could tell from the beggining he was hidding something. I did not expect daise to kill myrtl. I was watching a movie and it had a Gatsby comment.

Anonymous said...

omg holy crap i was right about the car thing mrs. svoboda you know what im talking about when i predicted the book at twilight

i was right about the whole illegal money thing...i went a little far with my complete thoughts but hey im not perfect and i was right about daisy loving tom kinda. it really bugged the abby out of me that gatsby and tom wouldnt even let daisey say anything about how she felt only what they thought she felt. its like she was the toy that they both wanted in KINDERGARTEN!!! they were acting like babies. shes mine no she mine no shes mine geez it was annoying!

i liked the whole descriptive car accident scene! it was great to know that her woman part pretty much fell off i wasnt really expecting that from scotty he doesnt seem like that kind of author.

gatsby was really irritating in this chapter. i think it was just because he was so cocky about everything i liked him up until now. they really should have gone back to where they hit mrs wilson cause i see revenge in the future. thats always how these things work either daisy or gatsby is gonnna die i know it and if it doesnt happen i will be unhappy!! i mean they cant just ride off on a white stallion into the sunset wheres the fun in that

oh and why does the word verification have such weird stuff??

Anonymous said...

oh wow, so many ppl have posted since i last commented.. b4 i forget, i disagree on the commment about tom being a hypocrite..i guess idk what he's hypocriting about..oh wait the cheating thing k nvm, its like carma?? and i've been reading little sections of other posts and the whole pirate attractive thing by hippie isn't clicking for me

now for the real response.. wrong about gastby, i thought he was a good one, didn't know he's bootlegger and such, and maybe hes not, but doubt it..didn't expect wilson to stand up and tom and the whole argument at the hotel, i thought it was too early in hte book, well i guess there's only like 2 chapters left...myrtle's death didn't really surprise me tho i wasn't expectin it, and i can't belive, well i can since i read it, that daisy killed her, she's the coward..but it thought it was cool that she did say she loved tom, and hte whole tom and gatsby going at each other was kinda fun..gatsby hiding in bushes not expected...tom and daisy (as nick said) looking at each other like secret communication thing was kinda neat, i wonder if they'll end up togehter...

random thoughts/ too coincidental: tom lost both his girls to gatsby! until i found out daisy was the one who killed her..then its like a cat fight...except not really. myrtle fights daisy for tom, and dies, but daisy didn't really want tom and tom fights gatsby for daisy except he had, HAD myrtle..and wilson fighting tom but he dk its him and neither get myrtle...and the 30th bday of nick..i felt like was just thrown in there, and he didnt' even remember. maybe to signify the importance of the day.
btw i don't really dislike anyone that much but i don't like anyone either...i think sympathy for tom kinda made me forget his bad in the beinning and jordan's lack of part in the story made me forget what she was doing wrong..and maybe myrtle's death balanced out her obnoxiousness in the beginnig..karma!...does nick's leaving his girl back home have anything to do with anything?

Anonymous said...

oh and also when tom's like should i just stand and watch some guy make love to my wife comment was neat (for lack of better word, idk what i'm trying to say) i felt like he was taking the stand and speaking out...

why isnt my post on the thingy!!!!!

For me this chapter was like a whirl wind. Everything came at different directions I didn't even expect. Some events I really did not expect were Myrtle getting killed. This was a big shocker. Some occurence was going to happen with her but I did not expect her to die. Another part was I knew Tom was going to find out sooner or later but I did not expect that soon. In particular about Gatsby's past and the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy. Plus Gatsby stopping all the parties and fired pretty much all of his staff so no one would find out about him and Daisy. In a way with these actions this pretty much says he will do anything and everything for her. Another part in the two chapters was about Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby. These 3 people were confessing/ arguing about their love for one another. Tom and Gatsby were acting ridiculous. I just do not understand how Tom can say he loves Daisy when he's been with so many other women! Gatsby just seems to be getting hurt more by the situation. Daisy on the other hand seems at one time serious but playing games the next. These are just a few of the things that suprised me throughout the chapters.

Anonymous said...

Wow....these two chapters took me off guard. First things firt Daisy and Gatsby's PDA thing going on infront of Tom. That would be majorly awkward and hints major at the whole cheating thing. Not to say that Tom is innocent by any means. And also when Tom invites Gatsby over. There is major tension and Tom already is very suspicious and does't care too much for Gatsby. Another thing was Wilson's apperance and actions. On the way to town when they stopped by his shop. He was very ill and green colored. And he told Tom of them deciding to move west. Though later we all found out that it was his choice whether Myrtle liked it or not. And he had her locked up in the room so she could not escape. Another thing that really surprised me also was when Daisy hit Myrtle that seemed really ironic. And it didn't really surprise me that Gatsby would take all the blame for Daisy but when she seemed to be conspiring with her own husband that made me worry for Gatsby. He would do anything for her because of his love for her. Though I'm not quite sure that she would do the absolute same for him.

Anonymous said...

Well I think my work is done here because Eric pretty much summed it all up. Ha. But there was a lot of unexpected stuff that happened in these chapters. I did lose a lot of respect for Gatsby, and would've lost some for Tom if I'd had any in the first place. Another character I lost respect for is Mr. Wilson. I want to feel sympathy for him after Myrtle's death, but he treated her like poo-poo. And I did not like the way Gatsby (and Daisy) handled the wreck. (Why does this book continue to sound more like The Bonfire of the Vanities?!) Anyway, Gatsby shoved it aside like it was no big deal, and Daisy keeps making me think of her as more of a ditz.
As I said in the last chapter, I was afraid it would get ugly between Tom and Gatsby if Tom found out, and sure enough, it did. I wonder what will happen next b/c all the relationships b/w Gatsby/Daisy, Daisy/Tom, Tom/Myrtle (obviously) are broken. Even Gatsby and Nick's relationship is a little messed up now. So yeahh...I'm out.

*Yeah what's up with the comment moderation, Mrs. S? JK I don't blame ya.

Okay, so I was kind of taken back that Gatsby was so poor. I mean, I knew he was "new money" but I didn't think that meant that he started with little. I guessed that Gatsby had a job on a boat when he took out the pictures to show Nick. But I was kind of surprised that Gatsby and Tom fought that much. I didn't think Gatsby was that immature.
When the car crash happened, I was pretty shocked because usually that happens in like Grey's Anatomy in their little teaser when everything is intense.. but yeah, it was cool because I wasn't expecting at all. Cynical and partially disturbing, but I like how the author went into detail about the wreckage. That's what I need to keep me enthralled lol. Oh, and this wasn't my prediction, but I completely get the whole selling alcohol thing now. If we got wealthy that fast, there had to have been something illegal going on.

Note: My sinuses: ugh.

Anonymous said...

Ok, so first of all, I totally knew he was doing something illegal. it does not surprise me one bit that he was selling alcohol to get his money. You could totally tell he was into something illegal because of all the weird lies he told about his family and his past. And how he kept changing the story of how he became rich. this whole thing was way predictable and obvious. I also knew that in some shape of form, tom and Gatsby were going to go at it. The argument between the two was pretty bad and i felt kinda sad for tom. Sure he has been cheating on his wife but there is still a part of him that still loves her, and there is still a part of Daisy that is still in love with Gatsby.

I really was surprised by the accident. I knew that Myrtle would come back into the story but I totally did not expect her to come back in it dead. I thought she might just confront Tom and Daisy and reck their marriage but not get run over by a car. I also thought it was kinda weird that mr. Wilson locked her up in the room. That could not have helped her sanity. I have to say i thought the description of her body very interesting and somewhat morbid. I never really liked Myrtle anyway.

Anonymous said...

i really was not expecting the car crash to happen. that kind of caught me off guard. i didn't really predict anything about gatsby's history because i knew it would be something sort of random. going back to the car thing- now that i look back, i should have realized something like that would happen. we even talked in class about how cars symbolize destruction. i knew myrtle would eventually come back into the story, but i didn't think she would end up dead. i really hate tom right now. he is a hypocrite! he is allowed to run around with as many other women as he likes but he finds out daisy knows gatsby and he thinks women need to be under closer supervision. jerk. i have also lost my respect for gatsby. he is such a people pleaser. he needs to stop caring what other people think and get on with his life. so does nick. he is 30 and has basically done nothing. this book is really turning into a soap opera.

Anonymous said...

so these two chapters were very surprising. i feel sorry for mr wilson because he really loved myrtle but she was so mean to him. she kind of deserved what happened to her. she wasnt nice and all she cared about was money. the whole thing between gatsby and tom was funny because gatsby just assumed to much and tom thought that daisy always loved him, so they both had a big reality check and hopefully they learn from it(even though they dont) gilly

Anonymous said...

Let's start with what I wasn't expecting....DAISY ran over Tom's mistress!!!!!!! That is some major poetic justice for ya. :D Also Tom found out and is furious and starts insulting Gatsby, while he himself is also having an affair. Way to be a hypocrite Tom.

BTW, why does every story have some sort of suggestion of incest??????!!!!!!! Does anyone else get that? Daisy thinks she shouldn't bring Tom because Nick, aka HER COUSIN, might want to have an affair with her and she's just like OKAY!!! THIS WILL BE FUN!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Gilly is distracting me and I can't think of what to write + running on about 5 1/2 hours of sleep isn't helping....

Anyway, I was right about Gatsby. I thought he was definitely hiding something, and I knew he had a thing for Daisy. I also knew that there was a certain reason for throwing parties that he didn't really like.
Nick surprised me, though. I didn't think he was developed enough to get so involved in the whole affair between his cousins and creepy rich neighbor, but he definitely tried to set up Gatsby and Daisy. Speaking of whom, Daisy angers me. She is sooo in love with Gatsby, that she doesn't care to be discreet in front of Tom, but when he confronts them, Daisy bails out and decides to stay with Tom, WHO IS ALSO HAVING AN AFFAIR!!! She apparently realizes this, but seems to think it's normal.

Okay, that's long enough. Bye.
way too much-from andrew
